I’m honestly scared to see what happens in scream 7. As for this sequel to the requel it’s a pretty impressive feat. It somehow reinvents the franchise, subverts expectation, pays homage to scream 2 and is a pretty amazing sequel to the fifth installment.

It's pretty amazing this movie turned out as well as it did, given the pressures they were under. While nothing has officially been stated, the quick turnaround after the last film (even briefer than between 1 and 2) very much gives the idea that the studio was pressuring them to get a follow-up out and make clear this was a full franchise relaunch attempt rather than just a single throwback special. And then on top of that, Neve Campbell walked from the project after the studio refused to meet the paycheck demands she's more than earned from the series by now (yet somehow they could afford a Super Bowl ad). It's been said this forced some major rewrites, though personally I'm in favor of it. Sidney has very much earned her happy retirement, and that last shot of her in the ambulance from 5 is a great ending to her story. Plus, it was really getting silly how any aspiring Ghostface was still thinking they could take her down at this point, when you'd have to imagine by now she's reached a Buffy level of "monster that the monsters are afraid of." It was also very nice to see how much Melissa Barrera has improved after her performance was kind of a weak link in 5, and they're still not wimping out at all on the idea of someone with "killer blood" using it for good. It also hit me while watching that this is actually the first film in the series that really acknowledges the killers from the sequels, including noting that Nancy is Sam's grandmother which was strangely unaddressed last time, and kind of makes me hope Laurie Metcalf might be down for the same kind of spirit advisor role that Skeet Ulrich has been killing it with these last two movies. The movie definitely was successful enough to justify a seventh, but unfortunately it's going to be a while with the other projects everyone has going on, on top of the writer's strike, plus Jenna Ortega has been saying she might not do any more due to how she likes to constantly be moving forward to new roles. However it turns out, I definitely have full trust that this team will give us something worthy of the name.

It's pretty crazy how fast this came out. When it was announced so quickly after 5, I assumed it would suck and kind of wrote it off until the reviews came out. If the same team that made 5 & 6 make a 7th then I'm sure it will be good, regardless of obstacles.
