I’m screaming! I thought I remembered who the killers were in this one, I WAS SO SURE and yet once again I somehow had no idea! I’m almost embarrassed by my memory at this point, but here we are. A great installment in the scream franchise.

I had a good feeling about this one when I heard it was the team who'd done the fantastic Ready or Not. And it didn't disappoint, providing a fantastic new direction for the franchise while still paying proper respect to its roots. Much like Spider-Man: No Way Home, the biggest compliment I can pay it is that during the first half hour, I never once felt anxious for the legacy characters to show up because the new characters were so engaging on their own. And that movie had the advantage of us getting to love them from two previous movies, while this one is throwing a whole bunch of brand new stuff at us and hoping they did a good enough job to have us get attached. And once they do start appearing, the film knows exactly when to let them do their thing and when to have them step back so the new stars can have a chance to shine (my one complaint is that I wish Dewey shutting that elevator door hadn't been played in such an overly dramatic way that instantly makes clear he's not coming back, so his death could have actually been a real shock). And these two may just be my favorite Ghostfaces of the whole thing, as today's toxic fandom is absolutely deserving of being ripped apart like this, plus it's incredibly refreshing to finally get culprits who truly have nothing personal against any of the victims, and are even legit excited to meet the likes of Sidney and Dewey. Sam and Tara make for an instantly classic new heroic duo for this fresh version of the franchise, and I hope we get to see more from them soon.

You hit it on the head with the balance they brought to the film utilizing new and legacy. Honestly, I would not have expected this film to be good if someone told me about it, but it really really worked for me.

One other thing I remembered thanks to binging them all like this: My one big problem with 4 was Judy Hicks, and how the first half goes so over the top in trying to make her look suspicious with her constantly hitting on Dewey and talking to Sidney from the shadows, which then suddenly goes away and she's just a regular cop during the climax. So it was great to see this movie just do away with all that and present her as a regular person from the start, while also adding in her relationship with her son that really makes you feel for both their deaths.
