The long-requested, long-awaited new edition of the WAR Roster Builder is here (the first update since January).

Here is the link to request access.

Using this sheet is very simple. Navigate to one of the tabs at the bottom - it says that they are locked, but you can edit every cell that you actually need. There is no need to make any copies because there are already many duplicates that can be found by scrolling to the right on the bottom bar.

For the Roster Builder, simply type the names of the players you want into the corresponding depth chart slot. So if you want to have Shea Theodore as your #1 left defenceman, just click on the cell in that slot and start typing his name in. It will bring up a drop-down menu as well:

The same principle applies to the depth chart generator, in which you select a team and it displays their full projection. Instead of editing individual players, you change the team displaying through a drop-down, like shown here:

I'll be releasing a full explainer on my Substack today or tomorrow, but here's a quick rundown of the changes (mostly under the hood):

  • New smarter projections based on a larger set of input data to optimize season weightings in each of the components of WAR, focused on maximizing predictiveness
  • Addition of an age curve
  • Shooting and Goaltending WAR are equalized over the past three seasons of minutes played to smooth out random luck-based fluctuations
  • TOI-based regression to the mean for players with smaller samples
  • Automatically projected PP and PK units based on players' 2020-21 TOI per 60

There are some improvements I'll be looking to make moving forward, including adding historical players, but this should give you guys plenty to play with for the next little bit.

Next up: historical player cards (2007-08 to 2019-20). Look forward to it.

Cheers,

Jack
