It says a lot about old timey train disasters that I thought the second one was the Ashtabula Horror, but it's in the wrong state. I guess trains collapse bridges and then catch on fire a lot.

It was and is useful for wiping windows (something about it absorbing more and not leaving streaks), for kindling, protective covering when painting or other things, protecting fragile items in storage, etc. Like most things back then, items were multipurpose and/or people made them so. The general cultural expectation was to not be wasteful.
