I feel uncomfortable watching this two-parter because of the casual racism and classism, but I think it adds to the impact. It emphasizes how big of a sacrifice it was for the Doctor to become human, without making us in the audience feel guilty by identifying too closely with the characters. It was a very fine line to walk, but I think they pulled it off with the choice of setting. Having said that, this is one of my absolute favorite stories because of the themes it explores: life and death, love and heartbreak, courage and cowardice. I cry every time I watch it, and I adore Martha finally speaking her feelings and Tim's description of the Doctor.

I often consider this to be my favourite doctor who story ever. It shows who the the doctor is by showing everything that he isn’t in John Smith. And it has an amazing cast from the younger stars Thomas Brodie Sangster and Harry Lloyd who go on to have great careers and Jessica Hynes who plays DT’s wife in a comedy a few years later. It is also DT and freema at their finest.
