My big goal for this piece was to show a scene that was lit by moonlight. In those circumstances, the colors get pressed together in an interesting way. In low light, only certain receptors in our eyes end up absorbing enough light to be perceptible. Our perception that low light is bluish comes from that fact. The warmth from skin fades away and certain strong colors can flatten out nearly to grey. In their absence, our minds fill in the gaps. The imagination can begin to overlay a rainbow of subtle hues within the shadows.
