As I explored this piece, I thought a lot about what I wanted to see in it. In the fiction, I think of Sariel as being someone who is constantly looking to the sky. I wanted to parallel that to my own fascination with the planets and stars. One of my great hopes for the future is that my kids get to personally visit the moon. I thought about that a lot as I painted. I know I’m not the only person out there that would sacrifice a lot in order to take steps to venture out into the cosmos.

Thinking about our collective desire to venture into space, I realized that the full moon in the background of this piece was a perfect opportunity to make a reference to the NASA logo.

I also found an opportunity in the clouds to speak to my love of space. Their colors and shapes are intended to reference colorized nebula photographs. I’ve referenced them for paintings before, but this time I wanted to make it extra explicit because I wanted them to be more obvious.

My hope is that if someone has a love for space exploration, that they’ll see a piece of that in this painting.
