The script takes a pretty significant departure from the actual game here! The players in the real game resorted to trying to frame Massey, the 1st mate, for the murder of Carol, to the extent they actually tried to beat a confession out of Massey in spite of not having evidence. Since this really wasn't solving anything and was functionally a crime, they were tossed in the brig for the next three days.

That sort of absurdism doesn't make as good of a flowing narrative, so instead the heroes of this game begin experimenting with how to stop the murders from happening, or at least how to circumvent them to happen to someone else.

Oh, a cliffhanger. :-) But man, it keeps amazing me how random these guys are, even though I should be used to it by now from MLP MAS and Mech Warrior.
