I think there's a long way until machines get the same cognitive abilities as humans.

Rights are less deserved by the individual and more optimal for society to afford to the individual. Animals and plants *do* have rights, and they do "deserve" rights (our society will function more optimally by affording those to them), as do machines today and as will more advanced machines tomorrow. You can't have rights without some uniform application of law, and law can only function within the boundary of conflict between different motive beings capable of seeing their will done upon their environment. Law decides how larger patterns of beings will help enforce decisions be made of such conflicts, and rights for individuals or groups or classes of beings both allow them to continue to function optimally and to participate in greater society as a whole, and also prevent them from turning against larger portions of society that oppress them and using their powers of environmental manipulation to undermine the larger patterns of law and order within society. The exact shape and nature of rights required by any given beings or classes of being relate to their needs and to their capacity to effect change in their environment .. especially hinging upon how those changes will vary between their needs being met and not.

Personally, I think robots should have rights. If they develop stronger emotions, such as anger and rage, they could feel offended and may start to rebel. Also, robots and AI is becoming smarter than us! They can do stronger and smarter tasks than humans. We should be careful. This is my opinion. Thank you for reading :-)

I think the solutions is simple

The first Law of the self-replicating robots, must be "Thou, Shall not replicate EMOTION" :)

If we look closely, machines already have rights, especially the machines we are most fond of, like our smartphones and computers. How you would ask? By paying a fee to extend the guarantee of the product. Looking rights at this light, I would say that rights are always given by us when we are invested emotionally , be it because of an animal, an human or a machine. In my opinion, it hasn't much to do with (s)elf-awareness and people tend to focus alot on this. Like the video states, there is no general consensus of what consciousness is, let alone, judging who or what is self-aware. But it does seems that we experience it.. (whatever that means) So, experiencing emotion ourselfs is the most determinant thing in giving rights to a living being or eventually a thing, when we are indeed emotionally involved that we care too much for a thing that we forget that it is our desire to feel right. In this sense, I would say that giving rights, has to do with (S)elf-awareness.

Luckily robots don't have emotions or feelings. If they did they'd be trying to escape to Canada from abuse and slavery. Yeah, you've probably been doing that today unless you had school or something.

We need something better than the notion of pain to justify rights, however. Otherwise we get into the problem of humans who can't feel pain, or what happens when you're asleep. If it's emotional pain of others, then what about people who have no family? Would it be okay to kill them in their sleep? This is an area that needs a lot more study, and soon, because if AGI is possible, we'll likely have it well before the end of the century (some estimate by mid-century).

Hmm, Abraham teaches that we are all extensions of Source. Taking that a bit further that makes us a bit like the avatars in Second Life where we are a avatar and Source is the one directing us. In that case we are the robots in this video.
