So we want to share what is going on behind the scenes a bit because I feel we are doing a bad job at communicating with all of you. It is kind of hard to accept for my brain but today we are neither new nor small. Kurzgesagt is one of the biggest science channels and we are one of the biggest earners on Patreon.

So we should tell you guys a bit about it. How we use your money and why we still do things like sponsorships, grants and commercial work.

And why Patreon is the most important part of our income.

Why are we so expensive?

So in 12,017 our team consists of 11 people working full time. We also pay our collaborators: narration, music and freelancers. We have an office, hardware, software licenses, a cleaning lady, someone to do our taxes, insurances. Weird complicated stuff that happens when you become a company. Our total running expenses are a medium high five figure number.

Patron, youtube ad revenue, sponsors and merchandise combined pay about enough to sustain us most months. Patreon is covering about 20-30% of the monthly costs (depends on a lot of things).

On top of that we get income through commercial work or donations grants from NGOs and other organizations.

This is important because income from youtube is not safe. This can for example be a simple thing like not getting a lot of views or losing patrons over a political video. Or something unexpected like a change in the dollar to euro exchange rate.

Don't get me wrong. We are doing great, in fact we have never been as safe as right now. We are able to spend about 80% of our time working on the youtube channel. Which is amazing and way more than I ever dreamed it would be. We are able to save money (goal: Be able to exist without income for 3-6 months) and will probably add one - two people to the team this year.

Your support on Patreon is not just another position in our budget. It is the most direct feedback possible – you guys using your personal money to help us do this. Of all the great things that happened since this channel became a thing this one is the one that gives us the most pause. It is a huge motivation and obligation to do the best we can. And it is the most important part of our income because it is the most reliable. It enables us to say no to things other channels have to say yes to. Because running a business based on a youtube channel is frigging terrifying. You guys give us a rock to climb onto that calms and secures us when a client does not pay or other income does fall flat.

„That’s great and all. But some of your decisions make me question if you are not in this for the money.“

Personally I don’t draw a salary from Patreon earnings, it is strictly for the team and costs like our office etc. My income comes from the business side of the operation, so if that goes well I do well. Which feels right since I would do Kurzgesagt for free anyway (and did so for the first two years).

Money is important though. It makes life a lot easier and comfortable. Kurzgesagt is not a non profit and it will never be because money is also a great motivator.

But Kurzgesagt was never *about* money.

There were a few offers to buy Kurzgesagt whole or to give us capital in exchange for stakes in the company. Very good offers.

I rejected all of them because… no. Just no. This is not for sale.

This channel is my reason to get up in the morning and it feels like something actually worth doing in an indifferent universe.

Our standard for our work is extremely high and Kurzgesagt is the opportunity to live that out in a way that we could not in normal jobs. We want to talk about fascinating and relevant topic and make them as interesting as possible. To awake passion in people about our universe and learning new things. And have fun while doing so. This is what you guys are enabling us to do. Thank you so much for that.

Ok. This got a bit longer than planned. Sorry.

I never wanted to share a lot about Kurzgesagt and the people behind it because it felt/feels wrong. In Germany you are expected to do art for arts sake and it is very hard to separate from that. Also the personality cult thing on youtube is not our thing.

But I went a little bit overboard and now we are very intransparent. So we are trying to open up a little and share what is going on behind the scenes. Still trying to figure out the best way.

Ok. Let's finally wrap this up. Again and thank you for supporting Kurzgesagt, it means the world to us. –Philipp

iceFox

Your videos are amazing, and always seem explain everything! Makes me glad to be able to support you guys!

Thanks for sharing and as always, keep up the great work! It's hard to do this kind of thing, particularly with the occasional controversial topic, but I love it and there are thousands like me who also love it and support it!

Scott Santens

I can't wait till you do your unconditional basic income video, because with this one statement, you get it: "It enables us to say no to things other channels have to say yes to." Also this: "I would do Kurzgesagt for free anyway (and did so for the first two years)." You all get it. You understand that a regular reliable stream of money enables the pursuit of the most valuable kind of work there is, the self-motivated kind. Congrats on your success, and I'm happy to help make it happen by being a small part of your supporter base. Cheers!

Hello Philipp, I appreciate you posting this review about what is happening. Wow! It seems that you have quite a "big" business to take care of and I am convinced that you are doing the right thing. I am speaking for myself here when I tell you that you don't have to justify the money you spend. You just make sure that you continue providing us these interesting video content I will support you as much as I can. Your videos rock! I've can honestly say that I have learned a lot from your videos and I appreciate very much the hard work behind them. Keep up the good work, but don't forget to take a rest from time to time! Thanks for everything! Best Regards, Attila

This. THIS is why I love you guys. Well, I mean I love your videos as well of course. But you guys make it a point to communicate with us and to be transparent, that is why I'm glad that I'm supporting you all! Stay awesome!

I hope Kurzgesagt will grow into the company it deserves to be. I also hope schools and universities will embrace these video's one day, because they make learning so much fun. Keep it up and good luck, Kurzgesagt!

I've never understood why people lately get uncomfortable, ashamed and "controversed" for earning money by producing quality content. You've found your niche, people love it and are eager to support with small donations that snowball into large enough sums to focus on what you love to do and what actually creates impact. So why be ashamed of it? If you can afford a Porsche by doing this channel AND sustaining a business that employs 10+ people that can do the job they love - I have no objection to that, as long as the content is strong, of quality, is objective and creates impact. It's a passion work, but at the end of the day you have personal lives and families to take care of, as well as adventures that need to be paid for to keep the inspiration going. I don't think you should be excusing yourself for what you do and asking for coin to keep doing it. I hope in general the supporters are pretty happy to be part of the backbone that supports these awesome videos. And if someone thinks that creators should be living on ramen noodle diets until they die producing 5 videos a month... well, that sounds like modern day intellectual slavery.

Thanks for this message Philipp, Since you have such a huge fan base they will obviously be negative comments, but you are probably aware than a very overwhelming of our supporter are with you. In this age of Information where people start to question everything and anything (at least I do), Kurzgesagt is one of the very few channels I trust without having to double check. You always try to be as unbiased as possible, and as precise as possible, which is amazing. So keep doing what you do, I literally do not know how you could do it any better!

Maic López Sáenz

Thanks for sharing this sentiment about the company and your goals. None of the "sorry" feel warranted. This is a position you and the whole organization seems to be proud about, and stating it clearly serves as inspiration to others of how this kind of projects can be done and sustained. Thanks for all the effort and amazing content!

Geil. Works for me.

Anonymous

My thoughts exactly, and I couldn't have said it any better.

I think it's OK to write something when there is really something to say. you built an huge amount of trust so I assume you're OK when you just stay silent. I was a bit surprised to see your work in a ZDF video (you really have a signature art style) but that wasn't bad or anything. just a surprise

Anonymous

You might want to change the title of this article, you had me (very) worried for a couple minutes... Something like "... Money & (NOT) Selling out" would have kept my heart rate much much lower.

Film Vagabond

I'm an artist and all I want to do is tell stories in what ever medium I can. Naturally film making, art supplies and recording equipment isn't cheap but I got lucky & had a supportive mother who showed me the world so I want to do the same for others. Inspiration, entertainment, wanderlust & enlightening on topics I didn't know about: That's what I've gained from your videos, so I'm honoured to help in anyway I can. I appreciate your transparency, you don't have to justify all your actions but it's good to know you address people's concerns

"It feels like something actually worth doing in an indifferent universe." YES!! I love this.! Do it!

Patrick W. Gilmore

After reading this, I tripled my monthly contribution. Please keep doing what you are doing. I don't care if you make a profit. Actually, that's not true, I _WANT_ you to make a profit. Thank you, keep up the good work. And remember that we want you to succeed - both artistically, scientifically, and financially.

Yours is one of the best YouTube sites both in content and presentation--the very model of an informative website--so keep doing what you do. You can count on my support.

Michaela Jansen

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, but I feel there is no need to apologise. You are creating great videos and I'm glad to contribute. I think a lot of us know how hard it can be to find inspiration and then put it into a form you are happy with. Your work is always of the highest quality, well researched and beautifully animated. I personally don't feel that you have become "intransparent", but then maybe it really IS German just to do stuff and not brag about it constantly. If you write something if there is something important to share that should be fine. Keep up the good work, keep inspiring all of us!

Tamara Zavodska

Thank you for your honesty. There is no need to worry, really, at least as I see it. I support you, because I've been impressed by your (meaning you and your team's) work and content you create and it makes me happy that I am able to help. Patreon is great in that way and it makes me glad to see the number of your supporters to grow. I support various creators (some big, some small) and the story is basically the same. For most, if not for all, the patreon money is rarely the 100% of their budget. But it provides stability and allows to plan ahead. I never thought.. oh, the creator has now XY amount of money, I won't support him/her now as it should be enough. Thank you however for sharing your thoughts and feelings. Keep up the good work. :) p.s. In recent months I had to lower all my pledges to minimum as I am in between jobs, but I have another interview tomorrow, so wish me luck. ;) Looking forward to being able to get the pleges at least to the previous levels. As I said, makes me happy that I am one of the many who allows you to follow your heart's desire. I am not planning to stop anytime soon. Your art is the best reward.

n0mir3k

Over 6k people give their money not for a product, but for an idea, for a belief. You and your team make this whole thing to inspire - and this is why people love you and the stuff you guys are doing. Rejecting offers - very risky decision, but a decision you can be proud of. We really appreciate all of you, team from Kurzgesagt, the work you do and the heart you put into this. Thank you.

I am really glad to hear that you are doing good for now. I love the content and the heart put behind it. It speaks more than anything you could say, so by telling us how you feel when you think it is a good moment and by keep working with all your heart (although always remembering to take vacations and spending time with friends and family) I am sure everyone will be very happy.

Thank you guys, for your honesty and your hard work. You are the best!

Good job y'all!

Quality over quantity. Great stuff you folks!

Royi Mindel

You just made me feel even better with my tiny investment in your channel, as a business owner I wait for the day we could get to spending 80% of our time doing what inspired us to open the business instead of just earning money for staying afloat - so I am extremely happy to help allow you to do that. Plus - It is very worth it, Best content on youtube, cant wait for more. Keep doing what you're doing! :)

It would actually be great to do a video someday about the effort that goes into making a Kurzgesagt video.

Anonymous

Who is the narrator? Can I get him to record my voicemail greeting? I probably couldn't afford him :-/

Matthew

After your heartfelt post today I've upgraded my pledge as well. I knew what I was supporting when I started doing so. You're an intelligent and creative GenX entrepreneur. You do a great blend of art and journalism. Keep trucking along and making great videos, I'm glad to be a part of letting you folks do your thing. My wife is an artist, so I understand how it can feel when you start to profit off of the art that you once did for free. You feel like you're selling out. You're not. You're finally getting paid what your talent is worth. It's scary at first. I feel like I'm getting my money's worth, and that's all there is to it.

Anonymous

Love your contents, so please keep up the good work! I also tell everyone about you guys so they might want to invest in you as well. You guys do an amazing job spreading interesting and inspiring knowledge with fun animation. The world is a slightly better place because of you guys.

Anonymous

I love that you chose to share this. Getting to hear directly from the people I support is a big reason I'm a Patreon, and hearing an honest account of how it helps you and what a difference it makes means I plan to keep on supporting you. Keep up the amazing work!

Andrew Wrangell Music

Thank you so much for your passion and dedication, Philipp. As a fellow YouTube creator who uses Patreon as an important part of my channel, even though I'm nowhere near as big as Kurzgesagt, I understand what it's like to live for your art. I couldn't be prouder to be a patron of such an incredible channel. The work you put in here absolutely shows and it's one of my favourite YouTube channels. Please keep up the good work as you're doing what matters. Thank you!

"This channel is my reason to get up in the morning and it feels like something actually worth doing in an indifferent universe." Seeing people with such beautiful mindsets helps motivate me even further to work harder in my field to be part of something that'll bring technological breakthroughs which'll transcend humans lives to a brighter peaceful era.

I believe his name is Steve. Pledge $50 (even if for one month) and get your voicemail recorded plus extra stuff (certificate, wallpaper, music, etc).

Anonymous

Clearly this should have been its own episode...

Literally, y'all are the only thing I support on Patreon. I signed up for the bird and the music, because let's face it my bird has a bowtie and it's amazing and your art style has captivated me ever since I first saw y'all. But what's kept me around is Kurzgesagt's continual strive for quality. Hell, I don't even get upset when things go wrong. Just as long as a video is produced eventually, I will gladly keep supporting you, even if that video takes 6 months! 😊 Basically you are awesome, and keep it up!

Kay Brinkmann

Hey Philipp, you are doing a marvelous job at lifting the cloak of intransparency a bit and I hope you still feel good about that decision. I for my part love reading about your process and the goings on in your professional lifes. Also, don't worry about us not supporting you if you are silent for a while. I joined patreon just to support you and that was long before I knew anything about you other than your videos.

Dominik 'BlaM' Deobald

The strange thing about the Internet is that many people expect stuff to be free - but creators need to eat, too.

No birds for sale! Chirp for independence!

Really appreciate this post. I am thrilled to be able to support this amazing work. It's so important, more important than any of us can even realize, I think. The future is primarily going to be shaped by how we educate the next generation, so there's nothing more powerful than this.

Anonymous

I love birds.

You're doing great, artists shouldn't necessarily be penniless. I get what you mean though, in Belgium it is still awkward to talk about money.

[γδ(αμ)]

Great post, thanks for writing this, it's good to know how our money is being spent and managed. And I really appreciate how it is.

Anonymous

Thank you for keeping us up to date. And keep making great informative videos!

Anonymous

Thank you Phillip for the very transparent note! It's wonderful to know more about the workings of Kurzgesagt and I'm hopeful that you and the team will share more in the future ☺️

Anonymous

Long...maybe some videos articulating all the bells and whistles to publish good content would be nice. It would be good transparency (you would feel better) and it would be educational to future content providers (new hires?). Keep up the great work and great attitude.

Thomas Boys

Whatever keeps you folks in birdseed, keep doing it. :)

Spencer Shute

Appreciate the effort to let us know what's going on. But as long as you produce content with the same careful passion that is clearly evident in all your work I will continue to provide my limited support. If anything I want this to be huge! I want you all to become wealthy wealthy people! Free and exciting education for the world is worth a few bucks a month.

Joseph Valentine

Transparency/openness is a sign of a good relationship. In this case, with your viewers. And as long as you invest in your relationship (by telling us what's happening) your community will never die. And I hope it doesn't because I can't imagine how it would impact us all to know that Kurzgesagt is no longer the most magical science educating YouTube channel anymore...
