Hi everyone, we're starting to put the docket together for DF Direct Weekly #109 - and we'll be covering off initial impressions on Star Wars: Jedi Survivor (we have now acquired PC and PS5 versions), possibly giving an update on The Last of Us Part 1 on PC since a new patch just 'dropped' - and if we can stomach talking about Microsoft's acquisition plans, we'll be mulling over THE POWER OF THE CLOUD and its role in the CMA decision in blocking the Activision merger.

The Asus ROG Ally continues to dominate a lot of headlines and we'll be discussing the final specs, initial benchmarks and the news that Ayaneo's entire line of Ryzen 7 6800U products will be upgraded to Ryzen 7000, presumably to compete.

Anything you'd like to see in the Direct? Any questions you'd like to pose? The stage is yours... in the comments below.

Watching non-DF videos comparing the new Overdrive mode in Cyberpunk to rasterization, including official marketing material, I noticed that most of these comparisons featured scenes in which the difference was pretty minimal to begin with. I also noticed that most videos do not directly switch between comparison shots, but slowly fade in the new image from one side of the screen to the other. As a researcher in perceptual neuroscience, I know that our brain is really bad at detecting differences this way, you can look up demos for a related phenomenon called "change blindness". Do you think that bad comparisons, whether technically, or because people don't know where to look for failings of rasterization, might be responsible for many people thinking ray tracing is only a minor upgrade to rasterization? I am also an Alex, so I myself of course love ray tracing, and what was achieved with Cyberpunk.

Please bring back "What's in the box, Rich?" That s#it was so much fun for everyone!

Slathering yellow paint on interactive items in Resident Evil 4 Remake might be an okay stopgap solution for the issue of environmental readability. But what are some of your favoured ways to address this problem that can be applied to a range of titles without resorting to such emulsion-based contrivances?

ConcreteLlama

If RT/Path tracing becomes the primary focus of the next generation of consoles/graphics cards, could we end up in a situation where they're only good at RT and terrible (potentially worse than the current gen) at current rasterisation techniques?

How often do you play games in your own time with the FPS tools on?

Do any of you remember the sony patents relating to design dedicated ray tracing units? - Sony patents ( https://data.epo.org/publication-server/document?iDocId=6759906&iFormat=2 ) refer to 'RTU's, which as far as I'm aware, are not currently part of the AMD architecture that's in the PS5. If sony was to develop 'RTU' hardware for a 'PS5 Pro' - does it sound like something that could be external to the GPU or would it most likely have to be part of the APU / co-developed with AMD? The way the diagrams in the patent look - (RTUs shown within a 'GPU box' on the diagram) would suggest a fully integrated hardware unit within the GPU - if this is the case, would it not represent a fairly ambitious level of collaboration / co-development with AMD? I'm just trying to make sense of how it would work - thoughts!?

Is Alex going to be the new Jim Carrey?

If the CMA rejects the MS appeal, can Activision/Blizzard sell MS the company by breaking it up into multiple assets, without regulatory approval?

DaJaCo

With news that Sony will be selling the PSVR2 in retail stores from May 12th onwards, and talks of price cuts - Does anyone think Sony will listen to calls to expand its capability by making it PC compatible? I'm concerned that with the high price - and early mistake of limiting sales to Sony's web store - It will be seen as a commercial failure that could set back proper gaming VR for the masses several years. Is there anyone at sony that you can impress upon - how much it could help its sales if it opened up to PC.. ? Yell down the phone at the earliest opportunity!

Hello DF Team! Will you be covering the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters? The newly released console versions have the same constant stutter as the Steam version when moving around and during cutscenes. It looks awful in motion.

Sorry in advance for distressing Alex but… In 2020 I bought a RTX 3080 and assumed my PC would be my sole gaming device for the better part of the next decade. By 2021 I had broken down and purchased a PS5 owing to the fact that most of the titles I enjoy were represented on PC as buggy, stuttery, poorly optimized, early access versions of games that otherwise played fine on consoles (looking at you TLOU Part 1, Dead Space, Jedi Survivor, etc.) Outside of the obvious reason - money - why are devs/publishers so hellbent on releasing broken, buggy, or poorly optimized PC ports that seem only to tarnish their brand and generate negative reactions and reviews in the community. Wouldn’t it be better to just NOT release the title and make it a console exclusive, albeit one that works as intended? Or better yet, release a proper PC port in a completely separate launch window that utilizes the strengths of the PC platform, as Spider-Man Remastered did. Final thought - will the state of PC game releases improve once UE4 is out of the picture? Again, sorry Alex.

Hi there! On PC, titles such as A Plague Tale: Requiem exhibit very little to no shader comp stutter, while other titles have virtually nothing but. We've seen remedies to the latter recently through shader precaching in menus, which Plague Tale does not appear to have. Is there any reason that games couldn't do what Plague Tale did? What exactly did it do to pull it off?

Good Evening, With the massive recent push of handheld pc gaming I have to ask, where are Oled screens? Surely it makes sense, especially at the high end and saves battery. Is there a reason we're not seeing them? Thanks again.

Leftisthominid

Now that Richard has switched to Unreal Engine 5 per DF Directs 56 and 87, if something unexpected happens during recording, will the new shaders not be able to asynchronously compile and thus cause an unfortunate stutter?

If a game developer is under the influence of cannabis while implementing ray-traced global illumination into their game, would that be consider baked lighting? (This was the most liked question for the last three weeks, we need your answers!)

Leftisthominid

Are there any current-gen exclusives that you think are "Too Big for Series S"?

Nico Simmons

I did as well! Which naturally begs the formal question - what is YOUR Battlestation @Don? Pics or it didn't happen XP

Nico Simmons

Hehe, awww. ^-^ What an admirable spirit you have! Great question, I think.

So it seems Jedi Survivor is yet another broken PC port with extremely high CPU usage due to data streaming. It seems DirectStorage was developed to manage those issues. Why is it then that no developer (other than Luminous Production with Forspoken) is implementing it yet? I understand it's not a feature supported by all graphics cards and so having it as a requirement would cut out a large portion of PC gamers (although the fact that those older graphics cards tend to be barely be able to run those games in the first place, makes that not that strong of an argument in the first place), but why hasn't it become at least an optional feature in more games yet?

Hi DF team! The advancement in ray tracing has been incredible to see! From no games having it a few years ago to now having full path tracing in Cyberpunk 2077. At what point do you think we’re going to see a game that only uses ray tracing with no rasterization option? Is that something the current gen consoles can handle?

A ps5rt with 72 cu and a ps5p(portable) with 18 cu within the next 18 months, what do you say. Thx for your service

Hi guys, thanks so much for all the awesome work you do! Every one of you is a shining beacon of positivity in my life! How important is proper screen calibration to the development and enjoyment of games? Are any of your screens calibrated, either using a reference photo or proper calibration hardware? Why or why not?

Hey, Alex, care for a match of Impossible Creatures? Not gonna stop sending this question on Q&A until Richard reads it out loud.

Seems like the Street Fighter 6 demo is limited to 60 FPS (or optional 30) when in a fight. It also seems physics are bound to this FPS limit, thus running the game at lower than 60/30 seems to cause sluggish gameplay. Why is this done? RE Engine does support uncapped framerates... Avoiding competitive advantage maybe?

As someone who 'upgraded' from an RTX 3070 to a 4070, did I make a mistake? I was intrigued by the RT Overdrive DLSS 3.0 upgrades but the majority of early reviews were luke warm at best. Is this a card that will improve with software updates? Thanks, and keep up the AMAZING work!

Alex tweeted about the recent issue of "lump loading"-induced stutters in games like Dead Space, TLOU1, RE4, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order/Survivor and more. As Alex stated, this was never fixed in those games. Why is this becoming an issue now, even on consoles...? How can developers avoid loading and deloading from affecting frame-time? How could games load the world more gradually instead of in very large chunks?

MittenFacedLass

We've already seen it, sorta. Metro Exodus Enhanced. Admittedly an enhanced edition of an old game, but, yeah.

I have read online that the PC version of Jedi Survivor is not looking good. Looking back at the past 12 months, it seems that performance on PC is a low priority when it comes to launch day. Is this because development efforts on consoles are eating more resources than they can dedicate to the PC port for a performant release or is it an issue with the game development tools for the PC r is it an issue with the PC platform itself and it’s architecture? I thought by having x86 console hardware, PC and consoles were sharing very similar platforms to make development more streamlined

Do you think any major console manufacturers will release an FPGA-based retro hardware platform for re-releasing their older catalogs?

Swiggles

the 7900xt just got dropped to 780 MSRP. It is now become one of the best new value gpus high performance based off cost per frame do you think AMD is who's going to help take us out of this bad value gaming lineup.

BrushReads

Listening the Forbidden West talk, I doubt my 3070 will run that game well (when it comes out that is). Might even struggle 1080p High 60fps. Is it simply that the control/optimization is better/easier for consoles or are PC ports simply not getting the love? Both versions will cost the same at the end of the day.

Anonymous

Would you consider doing a video where you would run several games on a certain hardware so that the games all run with the same fps and then see how the graphics of these games compare to each other. What I mean is that you don't run the games maxed out but with settings so that they all run with stable 60fps, for example. Rereading my question I am realizing that this is exactly what consoles are doing, d'oh! But maybe it's still interesting on the PC side?

тяσg тяσgιηѕση

Howdy Fellaz! How do you expect studios to implement fully path traced lighting into future games (CP2077 OD, Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition...) given the limitations of current generation console hardware and their less than entry level RT performance? Do you think developers will find creative ways to optimize their code to squeeze it onto console hardware like with Metro, or do you think they will develop an RT and Raster version side by side to accommodate the Series S? If the second option is true, is there any reason to also make a RT version if it cannot run on consoles?

Hi team! FYI my made up name is supposed to be pronounced as bogus :p Coming to my question, after learning that Flight Simulator runs a browser engine to render the cockpit UI, I became curious about usage of web technologies in games. Is this a common practice in the industry, or each game has its own bespoke native UI rendering framework?

Hey DF peeps, i just want to know if Alex, Rich and John will make a BF3 Retro like video for GTA V because of its 10th anniversary in September. The Far Cry 3 and BF3 videos were really well received by the community and i wonder if there are any specific titles wich will be getting retro status in the near future youre looking ahead to do a coverage for? Thanks for your system relevant content and greetings from Frankfurt!

Hi team! I understand this episode might cover The Last of US on PC but im wondering if youll dedicate its own video to the efforts Naughty Dog and Iron Galaxy have done to improve the game since its release? Thanks for all your amazing work done and I look forward to the future of the channel!

With all of the corporate kleptocracy going on, I felt inspired to join Microsoft and get in on the corruption. Do you have a political figure you'd pick out to write a letter to a studio of your choice - imploring them to reveal all of their current and future plans?

Alexander Seidel

Aside from the obviously bad PC ports, it feels like the players are now demanding that any graphics option in the game, is also carefully calibrated by the developer to not stress their hardware too much. I seem to remember a time, where PC games deliberately included options that would go beyond the capabilities of current hardware, which I always liked, because this meant that future generations of hardware could run the game with even fancier features. Instead, to include more features, games have to be rereleased, or receive notable updates to make them "next gen". Do you feel like the PC space has almost been consol-ified in that regard, with players demanding certain performance on the arbitrary set of features the developer calls "ultra"?

TechRyze

Steve Merrett and Jaz Rignal better make guest appearances soon!
