Starfield's recent trailer has revealed the true next-gen scale of the game, so it seemed the right moment for John Linneman to jump in with an analysis of what we've seen so far - from early resolution and performance metrics to what we can glean about the game's graphical tech and design. There's plenty to get excited at this early stage, but also a few areas of concern...

Looks farther along than Star Citizen!

I hope this is the last game they use Gamebryo... I mean the "Creation Engine" on BUT in this instance with a what kind of game this is... The Mods are going to be absolutely amazing! I hope modders can put stuff in space too. One thing they really should have done was integrate AMD's Tres-FX (the hair from tomb raider) into the engine because even though they have once again improved the visuals of this creaky engine older than most of the people who will play the game, the hair doesn't look quite right. The higher resolution they aim for and the more the improve the faces, at least when they aren't talking lol.. the hair just looks out of place. AMD could have solved that problem for them.

Ouch! Star Citizen is still a ton of fun even if it's super buggy and crashes too much. It's also genuinely impressive... The first time I played in a VERY long time was actually a couple weeks ago and I was in my ship with 2 friends and another friend had 5 in his ship and I followed him to a planet and we entered the atmosphere and I was in GENUINELY awestruck when this absolutely massive city came into view. Then we started walking around inside the skyscrapers of that city and it was just fantastic. I know it's been in development forever but it's been a very very long time since a game gave me a genuine sense of jaw meet floor awe. Then as we were leaving and flying through the city we got attacked by a group of players who were pirates, they damaged our ships and surrounded us so we decided we would RP so we landed and geared up for their robbery. We did both have stuff we found in a ship we came across during a mission. So he opened his bay door and a ramp extended out so they could get in but he exited his ship from a door on the side along with the 5 others and I opened the door on my ship while the 2 people I had hid in the cargo area. To our complete amazement we killed the pirates who landed and boarded then took the stuff we had from the mission (1 person carried it with a gravity gun) then we ran over to help them fight off the other pirates and while we did that the other ships landed (I assume they called for backup) and I'm glad they did because they had bigger ships but there was only 8 of them in total and we managed to kill all of them. Such a good time and most of it was just stuff that happened, it wasn't part of a mission.

"this creaky engine older than most of the people who will play the game": Get off my lawn, ye wee whippersnappers! Back in my day we didn't have fancy game engines: we wrote directly to the bare metal! We didn't even have punch cards: we wired the logic by hand.... and we liked it! XD
