Greetings! Are you all having a good week? Here at DF, you might have seen already but we are hard at work with all things Forza, so this week, the lineup changes slightly. John, Alex and Audi are on deck for DF Direct Weekly and will be discussing a multitude of things including Playstation 5's CMOS battery issue presumably being fixed, Bowser defeated by Nintendo, a bloody demake for the Playstation 1 and more!

You know the drill, leave your questions, comments and grooming suggestions in the space below and we'll get to as many as we can.

Bowser defeated by Nintendo? I assume it implies a Bowser-on-Bowser action.

Kris Graney

Hi. With Alex's recent FISTing video, does being sponsored by the game's creators pose any extra challenges or considerations to running the DF rule over the game? Do you get any closer access to the Dev's to gain extra insights on how/why certain decisions were made on how they implemented graphical features? Are they any more response to constructive feedback on issues that may be identified while looking at it? Finally, will we see RT version of Quake 2 on the (now not so) new consoles? I think Quake 2 would be a great showcase for some of the RT features of the consoles. Would Quake 2 RT be possible on the Series S? Many thanks!

Which is a bigger first priority to Digital Foundry - spending the cash for a high quality display, or having high quality graphics? To take this to the extreme, would you rather play games using RTX 3090 level horsepower on the cheapest 65" TV money can buy, or using RTX 3050 laptop-level horsepower on a high quality 65" OLED display?

I just built a new PC last month and I decided to go through my Steam library and check out some oldies cranked up to the max. However I kept running into the same problem, namely with Ubisoft games (Far Cry 3, Splinter Cell: Blacklist) and the first few CD Tomb Raider games, if they're installed on any other drive than the C drive they won't boot. Why is that? and is that issue something that still plagues newer games?

Why do Nvidia keep releasing lower tier GPU's with more VRAM than the higher tier GPU's? The 3060 and the soon to be announced/released 3070ti both strangely have more VRAM than the 3080.

Based on a recent Patreon Discord discussion: did you have parents or older relatives who were into games when you were younger and do they still play? What would be their reaction if you tried to explain the benefits of technologies like ray tracing, SSAO, Freesync, TXAA and so on to them these days?

As some game engines such as UE4 have become ubiquitous over the last generation, do you feel that we are missing out on interesting graphical and gameplay developments at the alter of relative ease of development? What other game engines would you like to see used more extensively?

The Dressing Gown

We are always told games are getting more expensive to produce, I was under the impression for a while that the developers tool kits were keeping up to aid developers making their jobs significantly easier, and in turn helping keep costs down, so what exactly is it that's driving up the cost of making these games? My suspicion is this partly comes down to open world games 😔 but Sony has proved that you don't need to make 1,000,000 hour long games to sell copies (looking especially at you ubisoft), and ninja theory has proved with helblade senuas sacrifice that the "AA" space can still thrive on a more Conservative budget and again it doesn't need to be 1,000,000 hours long. Its just a shame that large publishers/developers arent looking at this and looking to go back to developing more experimental "AA" titles rather than the same tired titles.

A few weeks ago Alex mentioned liberating Resistance 3 from bad frame rate exile on PS3. Sony don't seem to be interested in backwards compatibility beyond PS4 on console, do you think that moving into PC publishing (where emulation already exists) might prompt them to look at their older catalogue?

I think the answer is quite self-explanatory. Even the cheapest TVs are really good now, for example the Samsung TU7000 series is a fantastic bang for the buck.

1. To compete with AMD (on a psychological level too) | 2. There will be a refreshed RTX3080 too with more RAM, it's just not officially announced yet

I think the only problem with UE4 is that it defaults to horizontal FOV scaling as opposed to vertical FOV scaling that UE3 used. This means that UE4 games zoom in on wider screens than 16:9 instead of correctly expanding the image. Unfortunately, many devs are unaware of this and/or too lazy to fix this for their games, so you have to rely on community patches to get proper ultrawide support in some games, even though it would only require a minute of work from the developers.

As someone who worked in the game industry as a journalist, I can tell you that the "games are getting more expensive" stuff is just a giant pile of horseshit. Engines get better and more easier to use, developer tools also, plus emerging technologies such as RT helps development significantly, plus the number of gamers is continously growing. So there are more pros on the other side actually. The only games that May be getting expensive are actually the cookie-cutter, extremely bland, checklist-style open-world games that favor quantity over quality (like most Ubisoft games).

I would like to see an analysis of the Bloodborne demake. Limiting factor: 1) Did the devs limited themselves, looking for a aesthetic and gameplay but going above or below the PS1 tech? 2) or let the PS1 be the limiting factor. 3) Also, is it stable 30 Frames Per Second?

What specific type of games you all like to play and are you planning to participate in the upcoming CGNs organized by Docs? If Yes then can we have any one of the CGNs streamed as part of DF Play on YouTube or Twitch?

How soon do you think it would be possible to create a handheld console. As close in power to the Xbox series S. As the switch is to the Xbox One S?Assuming the same power budget as the original switch.

As a Norwegian guy who' s been on both sides of making and covering games, Audi, what do you think is the reason Norway has such and underdeveloped game industry compared to our scandinavian neighbors?

Anonymous

Hi all. I was wondering, how many games does each of you have in your collections? Also, if you had to sell off your collection, which game would you have to keep for sentimental reasons? Thank you

Do you have any plans for coverage when PSVR2 launches? I loved your review of the PSVR1 hardware, Rich. We never got much analysis of games though and there have been a lot of interesting titles in the years since. I get that your framerate tools might not be VR compatible but I think I am not the only VR enthusiast who would love hearing you breaking down the techniques and features that you can spot by eye.

Will 120hz modes on the latest consoles be less prominent as time passes? Once developers find ways to make higher fidelity looking games, you would guess it's not feasible to get 120fps right? Reason I ask is that I really like that Samurai Shodown on Xbox Series has 120hz support. Probably the only fighting game to really support it. I can see that really being beneficial in the fighting game community due to obvious input lag reduction. I do question if developers are capable enough to make their upcoming fighters maintain that frame rate while still looking nice and modern at the same time. A more challenging balancing act.

What are some video games that you guys think are paradigm cases of games as art (that is if you do indeed accept that video games are a form of art ), preferably not in a derivative sense of being artful because they contain artful thinks like "narrative, music, environment art and so on" but in ways that are wholly unique to video games as an art form, things that can only be delivered in such a medium.

When will clothing on characters stop clipping through geometry? The Order 1886 is the last game I can think of where I got through the whole game without noticing a single problem with clothing, be it clipping or rubbery metal.

I just watched the F.I.S.T. video and I'm curious how sponsored content comes about. Does a dev/publisher reach out out or does DF initiate the conversation somehow? What is the criteria under which you decide to make such a video, and what restrictions, if any, are there upon the content once you agree to make it?

Simplex

My guess is never, but I hope I'm wrong. I foolishly hoped this gen will have enough oomph to get rid of clipping (and popin) once for all but so far I've been sorely disappointed.

Simplex

Will you cover Resident Evil 4 VR? I wish DF had a resident (pun intended) VR enthusiast (I am one myself). Also I'm still lowkey waiting for those analyses of It Takes Two and Psychonauts 2.

Audi, what shampoo do you use?

Forza Horizon 5 runs disappointingly well on the Xbox One. You've talked about how much you like that Halo Infinite struggles on Xbox One S. How much do you hate that Forza Horizon 5 runs well on the One S? How much better, technologically, do you think it would have been on modern consoles if they didn't have to optimize for the Xbox One?

How would Digital Foundry evaluate Massively Multiplayer Online games at a technical level? Popular titles need to cater to the lowest spec hardware (especially free-to-play ones) and so I'm curious if the existing approach is not relevant to MMOs like New World.

This is more of a fun question: what's the most brilliant game you've played from a technical perspective, but you just can't stand playing it anyway?

Why do Japanese-developed PC games so often suffer from the same kind of problems? Fatal Frame 5 launched last week with assets running too fast if played above 60Hz. This has since been fixed, but why are these kinds of speed and performance-based issues so common among Japanese developers?

Is Rich planning on getting a new Tesla Model S to test out the Navi 23 GPU inside? It's roughly on par with the PS5 in terms of FP32 compute performance. Link to an article: https://videocardz.com/newz/tesla-car-computer-features-zen-ryzen-embedded-apu-and-discrete-navi-23-gpu

Just recently got into the fascinating world of Japanese PC computers from the late 80’s early 90’s (FM Towns, Sharp X68000 and PC-9801). The software and sound capabilities of these computers was fascinating. Have you ever had any experience with any of them. What was it like?

Why do you think Playground games decided to stay with MSAA instead of something less resource intensive? Best guess, how close to 4k could they have gotten in quality mode if they used TAA or TAAU? Lastly can you call them up and ask them to add DLSS and FSR to the PC version? 😀
