Hello everyone! Yes, you are seeing this a day early. Why? Well because we have a special guest this week so recording times are slightly shifted. For this week's Direct, John, Audi and Rich will be joined by Sam Machkovech from Ars Technica discussing the latest news, Playdate, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster and so much more. It's gonna be a show that's fun for the whole family!

If you got questions for us, or for Sam specifically, leave them below and we look forward to answering your questions DIRECTLY.

Have you ever considered doing a benchmark of PC gaming but on Mac's Bootcamp ?

In a recent Forza race I decided to show off at the end and cross the finish line in reverse, only to be passed by the Drivatar of a fellow DF discorder at the last second. What’s your most fascinating or greatest moment of video game hubris? - cliptacular

Is there a game that you are so sick of that you hope it doesn't get patched ever again so you don't have to return to it?

Have you heard the good news about OLED?

Who can top Rich's expression from last week ... Is it possible!!?

If a game uses normal rasterization and isn't using something like DLSS or another ai enhanced feature, are Nvidia's tensor cores basically sitting idle or would they then function like one of the cuda cores? Also, if they're idle, would AMD's approach of not having dedicated on silicone hardware for things like ray tracing be one of the reasons for taking that path or do you think it that choice was more based on budgetary restraints? Hope this makes sense, coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

Is it possible/probable that we could see tech like DLSS used to improve the experience of streamed video? YouTube is an obvious offender for sub-par quality, but even Disney+ and Amazon seem embroiled in a race to bottom for bitrates. I wonder if DLSS’ temporal element could be used to help reconstruct something better, out of the limited data available.

@DF. What will it take to convince DF in general (John specifically) of the benefits and validity of Cloud Gaming? @Samred. Now that you are directly talking to Rich, can you tell "Rich" all the things that you didn't tell us about Steam Deck?

With things like Playdate, ZX Spectrum Next, Evercade and all the other remakes of retro consoles on the market or coming out in the near future, do you see an option for DF to look into more alternative hardware going forward along side the GPU & CPU reviews we already see?

Ben Fisher

In your last video you made some references to the 4k upscaling in the Xbox media player. The Nvidia shield pro 2019 has a video based upscaler for video, even up to 60fps which can be used for Nvidia gamestream acceleration. Would be interested in a scaling comparison or maybe some breakdown on the Nvidia shield technique, I believe it's hardware accelerated, which I'm guessing on the 256 cuda cores?

Hi DF. A quick qustion about dlss. Does it work on 21:9 and 32:9 displays.

This is probably for John - you love to play on original hardware where possible but are there games that you prefer emulated because of feature enhancements such as an increased resolution, HD Mode 7, unlocked framerates or mods?

Anonymous

I believe Rich has stated its basically just a sharpening filter in the shield pro

Any extra gaming uses that Nvidia/developers could use for the tensor cores or fixed function hardware in the future?

Hi DF crew and Sam, on the subject of the new ff pixel remasters, I would like to know if Kazuko Shibuya did the sprite art for the new FF pixel remaster games? A new selection of her work was displayed in the FF Dot book, is it the same art? She touched on some of the points in that interview John discussed recently about needing to update the sprite work from when they designed specifically for CRT displays. Lastly, I know the Japanese mobile market is disproportionately huge but the decision to omit consoles from the launch line up seems a little odd considering the series pedigree, is Square just trying to maximise value with a staggered release and a console launch eventually? Has Square launched products with this strategy previously?

Perhaps a question for John, we've seen a huge amount of retro re-releases over recent years from companies like Limited Run, but these have largely been focused on consoles. Given the nostalgia for big box PC games, why have we seen much less interest in re-releasing big box games for the PC? It seems trival to use a USB DVD drive.

Has your team considered using a service like Floatplane that specializes in delivering high-definition content to subscribers?

I finally got a MSRP ps5. What PS4 exclusive games do you think most benefits from the hardware boost between generations?

Do we know how long DLSS took Nvidia to develop? What is a reasonable timeline to expect a true competitor (for DLSS 2.0+, since 1.x was all but useless)? Is FSR part of that roadmap or just a weak marketing ploy? And is Epic/Unreal actually in a better position than AMD (technically, if not politically) to develop a competing technology as an evolution of their existing TAA?

Ok, my last week's question regarding PCs holding back console gaming was provocative. But allow me to follow it up with a more direct question that better illustrates the point: when will PC games have 5 GB/s SSDs as a minimum system requirement? Doesn't that potentially affect the way a game is designed and programmed? And btw, the Tempest Engine is not limited to 3D audio. It's a re-purposed GPU compute unit, inspired by the PS3's SPUs with an SIMD performance and bandwidth comparable to the entire PS4 CPU.

I was on a fence regarding a PlayDate but finally preordered after a very positive review by Sam (thanks Sam!). My question is how do you see the interest to this product evolve. Will it stay a niche product? Should we expect Seasons 2,3,4 or playdate 2 at some point?

Any plans to provide updated optimal settings för flight simulator after the recent pc update?

Somewhat a related question but mostly for newer games. I understand and agree that older games look and play way better on original hardware on CRT but for newer games, say wii or Wii U games ported to switch, do you prefer an updated graphics or original hardware? I’m asking because I feel that it’s often a trade off - you are loosing a pad support in pikmin 3 or lego underground but gain improved resolution. Same for skyward sword - but in this case you loose precision of wii more plus to get better graphics and quality of life improvements. What does the team think about this?

The console manufactures said that the PS4 and Xbox One would be able to run games at 1080p and 60fps, however this was very limited in the actual number of games that could achieve this, now with the PS5 and Xbox Series X we have been told to expect games to run at 4k and 60fps with ray-tracing and on the current games so far released were are having to choose between 4k, 60fps and ray-tracing, is the PS5 and Xbox Series X actually capable of running games in 4k at 60fps with ray-tracing or have we been suckered in like we were with the PS4 and Xbox One, is this as good as we are going to get with the PS5 and Xbox Series X or are there things that developers can do to achieve this more constantly in games?

Rich. What one game in your opinion changed the gaming landscape the most?

Alan

What is happening with Virtual Reality, this all seems to have died down a bit now, Sony hasn't mentioned anything about PSVR regarding the PS5, what do you think is needed, a big shift into VR from the developers and publishers or is just a couple of killer apps going to be enough, I know that there is the issue with developers not wanting to invest with the low numbers of VR owners, but people will only buy them if there is things to play on them.

With OLED coming to the new Switch, do you expect Nintendo to make any OS changes to prevent burn-in or image retention? Or has the technology matured enough that these issues aren't a cause for concern?

I've seen plenty of discussion about the upcoming Dead Space remake being borderline pointless, given how the original game remains playable and visually pleasing nearly 13 years after its release. Visual enhancements aside, what else do you consider crucial for EA Motive to add in the remake that justifies being purchased by old and new players?

I've seen a tweet about how Zelda Wii U Tech Demo looks "better" than actual zelda games, can you explain the differences on a video between BoTW and this demo?

If a vsynced game on a conventional display is operating at an unlocked framerate, what is the point at which you would prefer the unlocked framerate over a locked 30fps? Would it take a 45fps average? 55fps?

Playing against CPU is still boring in competitive games. Do you think developers can use deep learning tech to create an online clone AIs from pro players' data? For example, having an online bot simulating Umehara Daigo the famous Street Fighter pro player.
