Another smoke painting! (Here's the first one I posted earlier this month.) When I made the rough thumbnail sketches for this dark smoke concept, I had two variations - one from dark to light, and one from light to dark. I decided to finish both of them because I was really enjoying the flow I was in, where I was painting a lot of clouds and smoke. I wanted to stay in that vibe so I returned to that second thumbnail, but I wasn’t into the “villain” idea so I gave it a bit of an overhaul. You can see in the WIP versions how I gradually changed elements of the painting to make it more introspective and emotional. This is a typical example of a painting process where I pivot into a different direction halfway through the process and the final result is quite different from the first sketch! Hope you like this one.

This is so stunning, I definitely feel like the emotional aspect is much more favorable to the villain theme. ☺️💗✨

as we said in Spain: ¡pero qué arte tienes hija mía! it's like: you are freaking awesome girl! <3

I love the more emotional one! It makes me feel the character's emotions, especially with the left side of her head almost resting on the smoke. Like she's upset about the fire/smoke but also using it as comfort. The final image has my mind creating multiple backstories to the character :D

Exceptionally nice. When I first saw it, immediately thought of the earlier illustration of the woman rising off the ground (personal favorite). Something in my head linked the two concepts. Maybe this fire sprite gets a background someday.

yes, I generally gravitate more towards stories that dig into emotional complexities so it's much more what I'm drawn towards! thanks for the kind words!

I wish I understood the steps more thoroughly for this one. Trying to do my own version of this now.

Loish

this was an admittedly very chaotic process! i changed the direction of the painting multiple times.
