Hey lovely patrons! Have you recovered from the holidays yet? It’s time for this month’s tutorial, and it is about drawing masculine faces! I got a lot of requests for this one, and this is something I struggled with for a long time as someone who was more comfortable drawing feminine faces. Hopefully the techniques used in this tutorial will help you out as they did for me!

As always, I’m using the MaCaLabs HB pencil brush for the sketching process.

There are also a few other tutorials that touch on similar topics to this one:

Constructing faces & expressions: this one goes into more depth on how I construct heads in general. It talks about which basic shapes/lines I use, and how I place the features onto that. It’s a good starting point if you felt like this tutorial didn’t elaborate on construction as much as you would have liked!

Creating vibrant skintones: this one talks about how I use color variation on the skin to create more vibrancy in the face, and how I blend highlights and shadows into the skintones.

Sculpting with color: this tutorial talks about how I lay down my basic color scheme and then use that as a starting point to ‘sculpt’ the details in. I use this technique in the masculine faces tutorial but don’t talk a lot about how I do it, so if you felt like that went by too fast, watch this tutorial!

Hope you found this useful and as always, let me know if you have any questions after watching!

This is going to be so helpful! Just like you I am most comfortable with feminine faces but definitely want to practice more masculine features and characters as a goal this coming year. I hope you had a great Christmas, thank you Loish for everything 💛💛🥺🥺

Super useful! Thanks Loish for the tips and tricks. I wish everybody have a good Christmas holidays:)

My friend and I were JUST talking about you and this particular thing. She was talking about way way back in the deviant art days we used to joke that its totally bullshit that you had you as a personal portable model for all the cute girls you drew. I was like "I look like Sam the Eagle, who the hell wants to see that in their doodles?" But seriously your band of brothers set is perfect. Really captures them as characters in my eye.

Loish

thank you haha! glad you liked those! i think artists lean a lot on what they know, at least when they're starting out, but it doesn't always mean your art looks like *you*. i guess it depends on the artist!

True dat. I have always found drawing guys pretty boring or less challenging. But it is probably due to seeing one in the mirror everyday. I wasn't implying all your drawings back then looked JUST like you, but when you were like idk a teenager or something you looked like someone at Disney just created you from scratch for the purpose. :D

Loish

haha thanks! I think one of the only pictures I posted of myself back then was me mimicking ariel's hairstyle so that might have something to do with it hahha. the good ol' deviantart days.. i miss 'em!

I know DA gets some grief these days, but I recall the first time I stumbled on there and it blew my mind. I mean given it was what like 15-20 years ago, but there were so many young, capable, interesting artists on there. They put you in front of me right away, and it pretty much has occupied a part of my doodle brain for all this time. Not to mention guys like funkymonkey1945 who is essentially my foundation course for illustration, I LOVED Leyendecker, and he did too so he basically held my hand learning stuff. Lol, anywho, story time over. As always keep killing it. :D

One of my art resolutions this year is to draw more men and masculine faces so this tutorial has perfect timing. Thanks! 😁

I love that you showed your face in this tutorial! As someone with ADD, it can be really difficult to keep my attention on a video and process the information if it's just a voiceover. But this one felt a lot more like a conversation and I had an easier time understanding the content. I hope that makes sense 😅

Loish

thanks kellynn! I felt like these screencapture tutorials were missing some element of familiarity that the ipad tutorials had by showing my hands. I'm glad you like it and that it makes it easier to follow!

Loish

oh man! funkymonkey1945 brought back some memories, I loved his fanart in the leyendecker style and the amazing portraits. deviantart was a game changer for me. it's sad that we haven't really found an art-focused social platform that was as vibrant or popular as deviantart since. so many people have left and it's sadly not the same anymore. hopefully it will be revived or something like it will pop up at some point in the future.

Really enjoyed this tutorial. The quick tips for achieving the desired look (in this case masculine) are really helpful and I like that you repeat the important parts towards the end because even though it’s easy to go back and watch again, half the time I’ve picked up a pencil and started trying things out in the middle of the tutorial somewhere and missed something along the way. Having had majority female life models for drawing sessions, these tips were super useful! Thanks again for an excellent tutorial!

I think the thing I miss the MOST from DA was the ability to upload at full resolution. So many places dictate the size and format of what you can upload no to conserve storage space, but DA was just like "knock yourself out". Anywho, I share your hope that someone will get it right and kind of rekindle what was a really solid platform.

really like this tutorial helps me tremendously! thats exactly what I'm looking for in a tutorial, I will be going back to watch tutorial and practice... thank you Loish and wishing you a Happy New Year!

YES! I've been dying for masculine drawing tutorials and this video was really helpful! A future tutorial on drawing masculine poses, specifically muscular, sculpted, male bodies would be so helpful as well!

Loish

glad you enjoyed it Ivan! And that's a great idea, I'll definitely add it to the list!

Loooove this! Like you, I've always been so much more comfortable drawing female characters and whatever male characters I tried to draw were too feminine and not getting the point across. I'm not comfortable enough to not use reference like you did here though, maybe one day :)

Loish

I still depend a lot on reference for drawing men, so I get what you mean! hopefully this tutorial helps a bit :)

Love watching this so much! One of the things I really struggle with is volumes (like, I love the marks you make to achieve volumes for the nose) Mine always appear really flat. If you ever had an inclination to make a tutorial on how you approach volume/mark-making, I'd love to see it!

This was so helpful both to listen to and follow along with — I feel energized to practice more now where before I was stressed about not getting those types of faces quite right. You are a really wonderful teacher 💖

Thank Lois. Another excellent tutorial packed with so many great tips and explanations. You have such a wonderful style and you make it look so easy!!!

Lois, this is great and very informative! Would you recommend to try to get the same Macalabs brush for sketching in Procreate? I haven’t found a reliable one for that yet but I do have some maxpack ones I’m trying to get more comfortable with. I love brushes that are very sensitive and pigmented but retain texture, like a good pencil.

Loish

hey andra! i haven't really used the macalabs brushes for procreate extensively just yet, so I can't really say for sure whether I recommend them. I really do always end up gravitating towards the maxpacks gouache set whenever I use procreate. but I don't use it that often so I'm not the best source of advice on this currently!

Thought you might get a chuckle with the reference to the masculine face structure so I figured I’d post. Recently just playing on the phone with a celebrity look alike app and discovered my face structure ( older guy) similar to Liv Tyler?! Was surprised until I checked the overlay and was like … not that dissimilar. Who knew, love your artwork.

Loish

oh yeah. I did one of those ages ago and the result I got for a celebrity look alike was Chow Yun-fat :')

Interesting! Can you do some videos/step-by-step about "figure drawing"? I love your style, want to study, and struggle with it, too! :D

Hi Loish, this is kind of a technical question. At @18.50, you select two area ( hair and eyebrow) with the lasso tool. How do you do that? I can only select one area at a time

Loish

hey Qin! you can do that by pressing 'shift' while you apply the lasso tool.

i love it
