Here it is: this month’s tutorial! It’s on creating vibrant skintones and addresses the issue of muddy or lifeless skintones in your art. It contains:

• A demonstration of what not to do

• A skintone study to demonstrate which qualities of skin I am to capture in my art

• A re-do of the first demo, this time how to do it right

• 3 more skintone studies showing different types of skin

There’s a lot of overlap with the choosing colors and sculpting with color tutorials, so be sure to check those out too if you are struggling with the technique! If you’re working in procreate, I also have a procreate painting tutorial that shows how I use a similar process on the iPad.

As always, enjoy and if you have any questions, ask away! :)

Whenever I draw people it always looks muddy, so happy with this tutorial! I feel like I’m always afraid to go into other hues, but your explanation of relative colours really helped with that. Thank you! ♥

During this whole video I kept trying to guess what color you would say you saw in your reference photo. I maybe got it right half the time. I was like "Wtf is she seeing there that is purple?!". I don't suppose you can do a tutorial on "Not Being Color Blind" or something for guys like me :D People tend to like the ways I do color without a reference, but part of me thinks that's because the way I see color is broken and that makes its cool to them. Anywho, thanks again. OH! and also thanks for posting that reel of the fall painting. Its super awesome to see how something I have in my house was made!

Thank you so much Loish!!! my work has drastically improved by following your tutorials. Love all your artwork its is sooo amazing!!. You're one of my favorite artists <3

Loish

glad you liked it! i think if you're pushing yourself to see all the color variation you can, you might see different colors than i did! in the end i think it's not important which exact colors you see, but to give your own twist on all those variations and subtle color shifts :)

Hi! I usually add shadows with a vibrant multiply layer which quickly leads to the painting getting wayyy to dark. Can't wait to try out your tips and see how it goes :D (and thanks for the vid!!)

Loish

multiply layers are a great tool and i use them here too! but usually very light colors (towards beige) to keep it 'blended in' so to speak.

I just watched the tutorial and it's super useful! One thing that particularly stood out to me is your tip about blending mindfully. I feel like I always tend to overblend because I feel like I need to make my painting look more similar to the reference (which isn't always a good thing but i can't help it.) I'll try to be more mindful in my studies!

Loish

yes, same here! as soon as I've got a reference in front of me, I get kind of lazy with the stylization, haha. that's why it really helps me to have a strong focus when i make studies!

Excellent information. Thank you! I've been frustrated as I've been trying to learn to paint digitally. Your paintings are beautiful. I need to watch the video about 20 more times to digest it all.

Omg this is awesome

Loish

thanks so much jason! if there's anything specific about the process that you'd like to know about in more detail, feel free to reach out through DMs. I can always make a tutorial or step-by-step about it in the future!

This has helped me find the missing puzzle as to why my character's skin tones looked lifeless and dull. I learned a lot from you on how to improve my painting skin tones. Thank you! I was now able to bring my character to life, add vibrant colours in the right places and using the references way better. This video has provided the best breakdown step-by-step on how to and how not to do skin tones. I've also learned to change my painting workflow before adding shadows. Wish i could show you my before and after artwork. Thanks again! :3

Loish

i'm so glad you found it helpful!! really happy to hear that it clicked for you :) if you want to share the results of your work, you can always send me an email over at loishh@gmail.com!

This tutorial is a game changer and life saver. By game I mean my art game. By life I mean the life this will give to my stiff and muddy looking poor characters. Awesome work!
