Hey patrons, here’s this month’s tutorial! It’s the topic that kept being overshadowed by other topics in the polls: painting (and drawing) hair! I broadened the topic a bit to make it about leading the eye and using hair as a decorative element, so hopefully it’s useful to those of you who don’t focus as much on hair in their artwork as I do :)

For the sketching, I always used the Macalabs HB brush (more info & link to the set here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-i-34615265)

In the video, I mention a process video where you can see how I’m constantly layering on new strands and layers of hair as I detail and render. That’s this video: https://www.patreon.com/posts/process-video-33495295

As always, I hope you enjoy and let me know if you have any questions!!

Thank you for this, Loish. I tend to hyperfocus and over-render hair. So being conscious of larger shapes will be my first challenge. I also love how you suggest trying hair shapes and directions on a different layer to explore options.

Nahla

Omg I’m so happy , can’t wait to watch it 💃💃💃💃thank you so much Loish ❤️❤️❤️❤️

This is what I've been waiting for a year! Thank you!

Anonymous

Thank you Loish, I was looking for that one especially :)

Anonymous

Really excited to try this. Hair is always one of the more difficult parts for me.

Anonymous

Thanks a lot Lois :) Amazingly helpful..

Anonymous

Oh oh! I was dreaming about this video the other day! I can't wait to see it!! 💕

Anonymous

I cannot wait to try this Lois!! Thanks so much!!

Anonymous

This is sooo cool! Thank you 😊

Icy

Thank you so much for this beautiful video!! I was so inspired by your sketching and your love for the Macalabs brush that I went and bought it since Clip Studio Paint allows photoshop brush transfers now... But it's not an abr file, which is all CSP is accepting. And converting it to one didn't work. I'm so heartbroken! Oh well, I'll consider it a $5 tip to a good creator at least haha.

Thanks so much, so excited for this one! ^_^

Bursting of excitement! Thank you so much Loish ❤️❤️

Anonymous

Thank you for the video. I really love your philosophy on how you use the hair as a design element rather than just decoration for the character.

Anonymous

Thank you very much for this tutorial. It arrived just in time for my tea-break and now I‘ll jump right back into it and so some studies with hair. =) Also I love your art-nouveau approach to hair in general!

Anonymous

Yay! I had figured we might not see the hair tutorial since it never won in the polls, but I’m so glad you did it anyway. This is really helpful, and I can’t wait to try out some of these techniques!

Looks like Shego... :-)

Thank you dear Loish for sharing it with us! very useful as always! I am waiting for your tutorials as for little holiday :)

I have never considered that hair has emotional aspect; It can be happy or sad etc. So besides this great tutorial thank you for this thought. ( I loved little mermaid as well when I was a child. After I watched it, I tried to comb my hair with a fork :D)

Nahla

Could I ask question,Is there is tool make ingredient on procreate ? Because I loved the way you color with it 🙈🙈❤️❤️

Anonymous

This was so helpful! I designed a character with braids and it's so hard for me to capture movement in the braids and not just have it sitting limply on her head. You did such a a good job explaining your thought process and I really appreciate it!

Devotionart

Thank you so much for this 💕 very helpful.

Anonymous

oh man I've been waiting for this one! Thanks so much!! You've absolutely blown me away with how well you explain your processes in these tutorials. It makes me wonder how you would approach clothes!

Anonymous

I needed this so badly in my life!! Thank you so much for this loish!! I really appreciate it 🥰❤️ the way you render hair is just incredible and I can’t wait to get to your skill level 😍❤️❤️ you are the best!!!

Anonymous

I've waited so long for this!!! Thank you so much!!

Anonymous

Awesome tutorial! I’m so inspired 😄✨

Brittani Harris

Thank you so much for showing your approach to textured hair! I would love to see a video of you fully rendering textured hair in the future.

Loish

thanks brittani! I did record some of the process of this piece - https://blog.loish.net/post/162011861833/new-art - so i might put together a process video of that one!

Loish

so glad you found it helpful!! definitely approach braids in a similar way as the stylized hair: draw chunks and basic shapes first, and then separate it into braids :)

Loish

the same process can definitely be replicated in procreate! you can use the lasso tool, shade it with a brush, and then use the gradient tool to soften it so that it appears like a gradient.

Loish

hahah SAME! i wanted to be ariel so badly. and thanks! this is something i also learned doing character designs for lego, where i worked on female characters for kids aged 6-12. they attach so much emotional value to the style of the hair, especially when it has magical qualities!

Loish

it had to happen some time! hair is just too important to my art, haha!

Loish

oh yes, art nouveau has a huge impact on basically all the shapes i use!

Loish

ohhh that's so unfortunate! don't hesitate to reach out to the creator, maybe something can be worked out.

Loish

haha so sorry it took so long! i hope you enjoy it now that it's finally here!

Icy

Ahh normally I would but they’ve made it clear in the product description that there are no refunds and they don’t have any plans to make it an abr file ;w; my fault for not looking into how the photoshop brush transfer works beforehand! Thank you though Loish, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to our comments. 🥺❤️

THANK you!

I really love what you can do and all you work, also i feel like i really needed this tutorial because hair is what most struggle me, thank you very much

Love love love seeing you breaking down your process, thank you very much!

Lauri Panopoulos Lauridesign.com

Thank you for another wonderful video and for explaining your process in detail. I noticed your opacity button on top is turned on. I recently got a wacom tablet and when the opacity button is turned on the paint is faint even at 100% flow and opacity. Do you have any suggestions?

Loish

thank you lauri! as for your problem, that's quite strange. have you checked the pressure sensitivity options in the tablet settings?

Lauri Panopoulos Lauridesign.com

I did. It's strange, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. When using your hard round brush what brush settings do you use?

Anonymous

Thank you Loish for breaking it down in such clear and understandable terms ! Just a slight query though 😌 I was flipping through your second Art book and loved the piece 'Huntress ' . Would you have any tips on sketching Hair of the Dread Lock type ? 😊

Loish

thank you! glad you liked it! i made a mini-tutorial on this topic a very long time ago, but i think it still holds up quite well! it's very similar to the process for drawing hair overall, except with a different shape - more of a thick cylinder shape with some width variation. here's the mini tutorial: https://www.instagram.com/p/BLOixC4DRQB/ let me know if that helps!

Anonymous

I just checked it out now ! It really did help and I can't wait to try it out 😊 Thank you 🙏🙏

Thank you so much for another amazing tutorial!! My 2021 goal is to work on hair so I'm excited to try all of your tips! Do you have prints available of that painting you've done with the jello-blob hair?? I've never been so captured by an art piece before and NEED that on my wall. EDIT* Never mind, I found it on Inprint <3

Loish

thanks so much for your kind words! I'm glad you liked it and also glad you found the print!

YuyuSunshine

Thank you so much for providing this tutorial for us!! I'll definitely approach painting hair with the knowledge you shared :] (Also I couldnt stop laughing about the part where you said, "I tend to find roots darker unless youre Billie Eilish then your roots are neon green".)

Niquey

This was an excellent video. It gave a lot of insight into how you achieve those design elements I see in your work. I'll be looking at your future work with new eyes and a wiser analysis! Thanks so much Lois!

Loish

haha she is a different type of human than the rest of us are.

Loved this tutorial!! The hair in your paintings are always so inspiring. I was wondering if you had any tips for the hairline/bangs. I really struggle with both hair folds of fringe or with the skin to hair transition. (have that same issue with eyebrows) - Thank you!

Loish

hey courtney! yeah that can be difficult, with a fringe i'd say keep to the same idea as this tutorial - first the overall shape, then dividing into chunks - and with the hairline, keep it loose and scribbly. the hairline is usually not straight but more like a soft transition, like a gradient almost. so if you keep it softer and use hatching to express the layers of hair, it will look more natural!

Thank you

Divi (Lovewin)

I finally got around to watching this. It was a great way to help me re think drawing hair. Thank you for this

Thanks for the incredible info, looking forward to applying it

Your tutorials are fantastic! I didn't see anything like this neither on YouTube not on any paid resources. Thank you for sharing your experience 🙏

Loish

I'm so glad you like it! Thank you for the support anton!

Hi Loish, fantastic tutorial! One thing I have been wondering for a while: where can I find the brush you use for sketching? I love it!

Loish

it's the macalabs HB pencil brush! more info about it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-i-34615265

This is so helpful. Thank you Loish

Very helpful! But I have a question; How would you add movment to a buzz cut or super short pixie cut? Sometimes maybe a client (or yourself) ask you to draw such hairstyles - So I wondered how to bring flow and volume into very short hair?

Anonymous

Hi Loish! thank you for this tutorial. Would you be open to create one for how to paint animal hair. Like a tiger?

Loish

that's an interesting topic for sure, although one I do not have a lot of experience with! I will add it to the list!

Anonymous

Love it. Thanks.

Thank you Loish, that was so helpful. I really struggle with hair.
