Hello everyone. I know I'm spoiling you with so many development blogs every day, but we've been busy!

The goal of Vanilla Ideology Expanded - Splits and Schisms is to add a new mechanic to make ideologies a bit more of a gameplay affecting challenge, as well as introduce a new form of threat that needs to be countered by the player once the colony is big enough.

If your colony is big enough, there is a chance your ideology will split into two - an old one remains the same, whilst the new one receives a new, game changing meme. This effectively means your ideology can now slowly evolve over time.

My main inspiration was Stellaris and how an uncomfortable political movement that grows quickly can change your entire playstyle.

Let me show you the infographics, they explain it better than I can:

Most of the options if not all of them are adjustable in mod options. You can set it up so your ideology can only split once every 5 years, with only one pawn joining the new one. Or you can have splits every 2 weeks with your ideology changing completely.

By default, ideology will roll for a split once every 15 days, with 50% chance to split, but only if you have at minimum 12 colonists. Upon split, up to 50% of your colonists will join the new ideo. The new ideo will have 1 new meme (or 1 existing meme changed).

What do you guys think? Will this be an interesting challenge? I sure hope so!

It’s a nice end game challenge imo. Are other factions able to also change ideology with time? And would it be possible to able it in already existing game saves?

It only affects player-colonies sadly. And yes, you can enable it on an ongoing save.

thats a interesting mechanic to import from stellaris i like it. with mods like this rimworld is just becoming the dominant game i play haha send help.

This sounds like a cool mechanic! I'm still getting the hang of ideology early game, but once you get more resources it seems to work itself out, so this is a nice mid game on add!

With the new ideology, will they want their own leaders/moralists? I love the idea of having a colony split between two coexisting ideologies and having places of worship for both of them.

Will they attend each others ceremonies / celebrations by default?

oskarpotocki

Leader is only for the leading ideology, but they will want their own moralist, celebrations, roles etc!

What about precepts, rituals, etc? Are those all re-rolled from scratch? Do you just change the ones that are incompatible with the new memes?

oskarpotocki

Precepts and rituals are dictated by memes. When a split happens, everything except memes is rerolled, but that also means that rituals are rerolled as well. Each ideology you have will have their own set of rituals.

Hmm, I'm not entirely sure if a random meme change feels right. In Stellaris, your pops change their opinion towards certain ethic based on what you did in game. e.g. been in war constantly and your pop will support militarists; keep peace for a long time and your pops will become pacifists; accept alien refugee and grant them citizenship, your pops will become xenophile; enslave aliens, geneticly modify them to be ugly, or in war with aliens will make your pops xenophobe. This feels natural. And I'm afraid a random meme won't feel the same, and sometimes may even feel annoying to deal with.

We devised a system that prioritises low impact memes - your people might become collectivist or supremacist before turning full on nudists or technophobes. I see what you're saying, but we need to remember that we don't have the time, nor the current system making it easy, to create such a complex new system. It would have to track numerous events - and it would lead to incredibly broken gameplay loops. For example - one would assume that if you eat a lot of human meat, you would then become cannibal overtime. However, the game punishes you for eating human meat by giving you incredibly hard hitting mood debuffs. This means player would be punished by the game... until they aren't. This wouldn't resonate well with wider audience. Consider the system we have in place now, the one that we made, to be more of a Stellaris-Lite, and lets leave the full overhaul to Ludeon if they ever want to change it, which I imagine they just might.

Understandable. I guess such system can only be achieved if the game itself allows tracking of various actions and remebering them. I salute you good sir for trying to create something dynamic based on the current system.

I love this, thanks man! This is a big question really, so it is really cheeky of me to ask, but are there any plans for "merging" some of the existing vanilla expanded into ideoligion artstyles, so they are in game but only if your ideoligion is appropriate for it? For example the viking runed column becoming part of a "viking" ideologion art, to remove some of the menu clutter when you have all the VEx content installed? Same for clothing options and such. Either way though, I wish you all the best mate, and am absolutely astounded by your pace of content!

No way to do this without breaking the game for every mod user we have. We also have no plans for it - as it removes gameplay elements from our mods. Every item, structure etc we ever did has different stats or uses than vanilla objects - styles only works if they are the same.
