Chapter 589: Rescuers and the Association for the Protection of Nature

In the exotic realm of the Shattered City, a huge temporal node suddenly emitted waves of ripples, followed by a stream of transport convoys emerging from the portal, driving straight through the city, heavily dotted with guard posts and sentinels, on roads made smooth and broad by magic.

On her first visit to this foreign realm, the novice wizard Hill looked out through the transparent windows of the transport convoy. In stark contrast to the solid and even roads beneath the convoy were the ravaged lands outside, full of ravines and craters, prompting her to remark, "Teacher, is this the foreign realm? It looks even more desolate than the moon..."

"That’s the aftermath left by Lord Lynn of the Star of Magic during his battle with the Moon Goddess!" explained Cody, a senior wizard, with a chuckle, then shook his head. "But other places aren't much better! I heard this place was once a star of life, but it's nearing the end of its lifecycle!"

"Do stars also meet their end?" Hill's face showed a trace of astonishment; in her view, the world was mainly composed of stones and soil—could even these hard stones have a lifespan? "Of course, everything has its day of demise," the old wizard responded with a laugh.

"Will our world face the same fate one day?" Hill asked worriedly, furrowing her brow.

"Well..." The senior wizard paused, as Hill's question had undoubtedly touched on his knowledge gap, and he awkwardly coughed twice before saying, "Who knows? Perhaps, but that would be a very, very long time from now."

Hill pondered over how long 'a very long time' might be, but before she could grasp the concept, the convoy stopped—they had arrived!

Leading the way, Wizard Cody was the first to disembark from the transport convoy, eager to avoid further questioning.

They arrived at a spacious wooded area, surrounded by walls of magically created earth and stone. Although rudimentary in appearance, the protective standards were quite high, and the entire area was enveloped in an alchemical array.

As they stepped off the transport, they were greeted by the sounds of restless roaring and the continuous striking of iron.

"These little guys don't seem too calm, do they?" laughed Cody.

"Of course, how could those that survive in the harsh environment of the foreign realm be calm!" laughed the wizard guarding the entrance, quickly leading them into the forest.

Unlike other wizards who came to the foreign realm to transport materials, they were there to rescue the exotic magical beasts.

If this world were to collapse, all the creatures living in the foreign realm would face extinction. It seemed too wasteful to let them perish with this world, so at a recent meeting, Sanchez, who had just become the speaker, proposed a rescue plan to bring these exotic beasts back to the Eternal Star for safekeeping.

This proposal received strong support from many shapers, potion masters, and alchemy scholars, both for practical reasons of replenishing magical materials and from a desire to protect life. However, capturing these exotic beasts was not an easy task; each one they encountered either possessed great strength or had special skills for survival and escape.

Cody stepped in and immediately noticed a seven-meter-tall beast, furiously trying to tear open an iron cage with its claws. Unfortunately, the cage was electrified, and after some struggle, the raging beast quickly collapsed, its body twitching with the electric current.

The other magical beasts held there were also firmly restricted by magic.

"Isn't this a bit too cruel?" Hill couldn't help but speak out.

"We've tried more humane methods," shrugged the leading wizard, sharing the difficulties of their work.

In fact, when they first captured these beasts, members of the Association for the Protection of Nature had attempted to communicate with them using psychic spells, but with little success.

Compared to peaceful interaction, these powerful magical beasts, long accustomed to the harsh conditions of the foreign realm, understood all too well the principle that might makes right! Cody was aware that taming these beasts quickly was unrealistic, but achieving this level of control was already quite an accomplishment.

"We've even found a griffin settlement, but sadly they'll have to stay here forever," said the wizard regretfully.

These magical beasts, which had already established populations on the Eternal Star, were not worth the time and effort to rescue.

"Our time is limited; we can only do our best!" Cody felt it was a pity, but their participation in this rescue operation was largely motivated by their love for these creatures.

"Alright, let's get to work!" Cody didn't delay any longer and instructed the wizards present to work together to load the newly captured dozens of magical beasts onto the transport.

Those beasts too large to fit normally had wheels fitted under their cages, and they were towed away by the transport vehicles.

The return journey, burdened with tens of tons of heavy creatures,

was much slower than the trip there; they hadn't completed even a third of the distance by midday.

Despite administering sleeping powder to these restless magical beasts before departure, there was no guarantee they wouldn't wake up en route. Cody was just about to instruct several wizards to reinforce the cages as a precaution when a piercing alarm suddenly sounded.

"What's happening?" Cody's face changed as he stuck his head out the window to assess the situation, surprised to find that the cages holding the beasts were not the issue.

"Look up... Look at the sky!" a female wizard accompanying the convoy called out loudly.

The alarm had been triggered by a magical detection device on the vehicle's roof, capable of detecting strong magical reactions several kilometers away.

Cody looked up and quickly spotted the culprit behind the alarm—hundreds of bizarre, fiery, winged magical beasts, almost turning the sky red.

"What are these? Another new type of beast?" Hill watched the flame demons appear in the sky, quite excited.

They had come to the foreign realm to find unseen magical beasts to bring back to the Eternal Star, and here they were, coming right to them.

However, Cody's expression became more serious. Unlike Hill, who was new to this task, this wasn't his first time escorting such a convoy.

They had never before been attacked on such a large scale because the magical beasts living in the foreign realm were highly alert. With so many people gathered together, generating a strong magical reaction, ordinary beasts would not dare approach, let alone risk an assault.

More importantly, the appearance of these beasts reminded him of a previous meeting, where the Star of Magic had mentioned a vanguard from the home world.

In the moments of delay, hundreds of flame demons had already dived down.

The fierce sound of machine gun fire followed, ensuring the transport of these beasts was unimpeded. Besides Cody, the senior wizard, and a dozen other formal wizards for protection, the convoy was also equipped with light weapons.

The terrifying barrage of gunfire swept through, immediately turning the fifteen most aggressive flame demons into cinders, then their bodies exploded violently, their molten remains falling like erupting lava.

Each flame demon was like a mobile bomb, their semi-elemental bodies able to withstand most attacks, but exploding outright under excessive force. Furthermore, the flames generated by their explosions did not harm their companions but instead served as a source of strength and nourishment.

Cody saw a flame demon, half its body shattered by the gunfire, merge directly with the remains of a comrade, completely healing its wounds and continuing its relentless advance as if slaughter was its only purpose.

Cody frowned; these did not seem like naturally evolved species but rather like war machines artificially created.

【Breath of Frost】

Seeing these fiery creatures charging down despite the gunfire, Cody raised his hand, and a cold frost quickly condensed in the air, transforming into a fierce cold wave that surged towards the approaching flame demons.

The intense heat of the flames collided with the chilling frost, causing a violent reaction. All flame demons that touched the ice crystals shrank in size and then exploded.

Cody quietly breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed that these attacking beasts were not as powerful as he had feared; their strength was only at the second or third tier, notable only for their semi-elemental bodies and self-destructive capabilities. He could handle them without needing to call for reinforcements.

Just as he thought this, Cody's expression suddenly darkened. Several of the exploded flame demons had flown at a low height, and their fiery remains had burned several large holes in a cage restraining a giant beast.

The previously controllable situation immediately became chaotic.

"Damn!" Cody cursed, quickly expanding his domain to manage these flying bombs before they could release more dangerous beasts.

After about an hour and a half, the wizards on site finally resolved the major trouble. As a cost, two formal wizards and over a dozen guards lost their lives, unfortunate victims of the beasts that had broken free from the damaged cages.

Cody's expression was extremely grim, but what worried him more was the implication of these strange beasts' appearance.

The sky, previously calm, had changed color, and a severe storm seemed imminent...
