Thanks for another great reaction guys. By the way, the Italian word that Gloria used around 27:30 was 'malocchio' which means 'evil eye'. That one comes up a fair amount in the show.

Well, I didn't expect to hear Daniel reference "soaking" 😂

During the scene where AJ and his friends were swimming after hours at the school, you might not have noticed a 15-year old Lady Gaga as one of the girls sitting in the stands.

Tim Raths

@ Jeffery, she’s the blonde girl sitting on the second level of the bleachers.

I'll admit that I did not catch on to the references to snakes regarding Gloria until someone had pointed it out to me. It's a very obvious and deliberate choice taken by the creators of the show. Knowing that, it does give those scenes a different experience when watching again. One thing that was obvious to me though was the reference to Tony's mother. While making out at the zoo, Gloria says "poor you" to Tony, causing him to pull his head back and give her a strange look. That was something his mother would say all the time, and he noticed it immediately. He didn't know how to respond to that, so he just chooses to get back to kissing. Between that reminder of his mother, the similarities to Janice with her religious beliefs, and Tony knowing that she's in therapy for ruining relationships, Gloria has been waving large red flags in his face, but for some reason he chooses to ignore all of them.

"My pizza never hurt-a nobody" This is a fun episode with some funny moments that still manages to say a lot about its characters. The show goes off on the Soprano kids, and it doesn't have much good to say about them. In the first scene, both kids get Carmela a gift that is much theirs too (Maybe Carmela does like action movies, but The Matrix was one of the biggest blockbusters at the time at it makes more sense AJ would later watch the movie). There's definitely a lot of self-serving behaviors going on in this episode. AJ goes off on his dumb pool wrecking spree, but the school gives him a slap on the wrist because he's good at football. Meadow wants a car so he can go see Jackie Jr. whenever she pleases, not because she can see her parents whenever. Tony gets Carmela jewelry to assuage his own guilt over cheating, which Carmela picks up on. There's also some commentary on religion, and how its used as a crutch for selfishness and hypocritical behavior. Janice has always claimed to be spiritual despite how greedy and awful she can be (and the cocaine on her nose lmao); Gloria is a self-proclaimed Buddhist, and is able to reconcile that with her job selling expensive cars and lavish lifestyle. Tony mentions how Janice used to be Buddhist as well. In the same scene, Gloria gives Tony a playful look and tells him "poor you", and for a quick second freezes in shock and confusion. "Oh poor you", is something Livia would sarcastically tell Tony in season one. Two of the Soprano women are alluded to or talked about in the same scene. On another note, snakes cannot in fact change genders. This is a misconception owing to the fact that you can't immediately tell its gender (sometimes you can tell by its tail but more reliably via a professional probing them). Notice how Paulie's "snakes can fuck themselves" scene immediately follows a scene with Gloria and is referred to in the zoo scene.

One of the few flaws in this other worldly great show: there’s no way AJ is actually any good at football—he’s tiny and has never not moved like a slug. And while I’m at it, I doubt Jackie Jr. was All County at Boonton, either—he’s barely taller than Carmella when he’s standing next to her delivering Christmas presents. It’s more credible, I guess, being Morris County rather than Essex so maybe he lettered or even started, but I’m not buying All County. Any Garden Staters out there agree? You know when a character does or says something that surprises you and t provokes reevaluation of who you thought that character was (ie Paulie and Adriana’s underwear last week)? Is there anything MORE in character than AJ having no idea that a gutter is a thing that exists and that it requires cleaning? Stunod.

A little bit of trivia; the blonde girl laughing by the pool when AJ and his friends are wrecking it is Lady Gaga.

Re: Tony ignoring the red flags - what looks good to you isn't always good FOR you.

I have always thought that about AJ. He's pretty skinny, but they do say it's the freshman football team. Even so, definitely too small to be a lineman. I totally buy that AJ doesn't know what a gutter is lol
