Ever wonder why most people don’t appreciate complicated musical styles like metal? I submitted an album to metal blade records that got rejected back in 2008. It was full of atonal serialism,  bitonality and other avant garde ideas.  Pushing the creative envelop or displaying extreme virtuosity is ok if done in moderation. Easier said than done though. Here’s 3 reasons virtuosic playing falls on deaf ears

1. Babes Can’t Dance

Sad but true, babes can’t dance to a 200 bpm shred opus. Musical traditions are often associated with celebratory events as a good vibe facilitator. Complicated prog is often more cerebral and mathematical. One isn't better than the other....just keep in mind most people view music as entertainment, not math class.

2. I wanna FEEL something

Number 2, No one cares if you practice 69 hrs per day. We wanna FEEL something! Music isn’t a competition, Draw on personal experience and write from the heart. I like to think of metal bands like Pantera as a perfect example of metal FEEL. Dimebag's ability to crush his 0-0-0 riffs and make us wanna groove was uncanny!

3. Solo Suicide

Number 3, Solos should serve the song. Don’t just finger your g string for 69 minutes at 420 mph and expect people to listen. Learn to outline chords and sketch out pleasing melodic lines. If you approach solos as an opportunity to display your chops, it's gonna fail. Instead, study the song you're soloing over and try to elevate the vibe.
