Whats your favorite type of metal music? Medieval themed music is a very popular genre that you guys ask me about frequently

Here’s 3 tips to get that Medieval Metal sound (full tabs below)

1. Dorian Mode

The Dorian Mode is a magical scale that makes us feel like we’re frolicking in an enchanted forest. The E Dorian scale is spelled E-F#-G-A-B-C#-D. The raised 6TH degree or C# is what separates it from other minor scales. This creates a dark/light mood popular in many songs

2. Medieval Chords

The medieval chords (Em-A) sound whenever you rescue a fair maiden from the castle tower. It’s the sound of winning a battle or slaying a dragon

3. Scale + Chords

Combine the scale and chords to make your own music. In the attached Etude below, I’m outlining the primary chords in my riffs and using the dorian scale in my licks. Now grab your axe and let’s ride into battle!
