Who's your favorite modal master? 

Randy Rhoads used modal chord progressions frequently in his music. Many people learn the scales but not the chords to a particular mode.....which is unfortunate because the chords are really where the music is. 

Below I've attached the primary chords for A harmonic minor, with an A pedal tone in the bass. Am-Dm and E or i-iv-V are the pillars of the classical sound. Use this progression as the basic framework when writing in the neoclassical style. 

I've also included the primary chords for A Dorian #4, with is the 4th mode of the harmonic minor scale. Am and B chords characterize this haunted sound. Absolutely perfect for metal music. You could also think of it as a i chord followed by a V/V.
