Lots of different things this week.

TLS Comic: When I think of an idea I think is cute or funny, I generally put it into the game. Occasionally, however, I have an idea for the cast that isn't suited to the fundamental medium of game sprites/dialogue. This little comic with Annikath is an attempt to explore one of those alternate ideas. Hopefully Patreon doesn't squash or mangle the image. I may put it up in other internet places if anyone has suggestions.

DStP: Though a new fatal error appeared in the web version, generally a death knell for this sort of thing, the game is trending in a positive direction with better numbers than predicted. In theory once the feedback trails off, this project will go on the backburner because there's nothing to do but wait on other people's work.

OEA Maps: You're getting two weeks of these at once, so please take a look. Though there are a large number of maps, they mostly cover a few dungeons:

  • Canisan Mine: All floors of it. Note how we tried to vary the light level and ornamentation of each floor, which will hopefully help distinguish them.
  • Dungeon of Dreams: First map got a slight redesign to look better, but otherwise the same general concept. Note the unusual lighting on the final map. With this, the last large Tale is completely mapped.
  • Tower of Order: This and the previous are both Dreamer-based dungeons with a primarily white aesthetic, so we tried to distinguish them with secondary colors. All the other floors coming up.
  • Revised New Canisan: Throwing this in. The final version has moving clouds, though.

OEA Trailer: I'm working on an alternate direction, perhaps with something next week.

Books: I have a big launch next weekend, the second book in The Brightest Shadow. More on that later.

Personally: The past week I have been running on empty, which is the worst state for meaningful creative work. If I can endure the next week or so, I should be fine. I hope at that time I will have a much cleaner slate of work to go along with renewed energy.

Oh I'd definitely post that comic else where. It's cutesy little things like this that really draw in people not familiar with the subject otherwise. Look at the explosion in awareness Helltaker had when the fan art started making deep penetration into different communities.

The comic it's beautifull, I love Sabitha personality. But I must admit that I am worried of TLS progress. Take care of youserlf and dont make the same mistake as the last year, dont overburn, making everything at the same time will be bad for you and make angry the others.

The Brightest Shadow hype!!! also this comic is cute and DStP was a fun jaunt

DutchieD00dle

Yeah, Imma echo that last sentiment. Nobody benefits from you burning yourself out Sierra, least of all you, so make sure that you take care of yourself! Also, I totally wasn't expecting to see a TLS comic! A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

Annikath will cover Twitter, so I'll do... Reddit and Imgur, I guess. I'll try to do some research at some point, but I'd take sub recommendations.

MiaKitty

I adore this comic. It reminds me of the Aliens&Humans/HumansAreSpaceOrc stuff, but with a demoness, and I did not know I needed this until now. I MUST CONSUME. Edit (Not Humans in Space, sorry. Humans Are Space Orcs.)

LOLtohru

Awww Sabitha cares.

Dmitry F

The comic is very amusing and my only disappointment is a lack of nibbling. Hope to see more amusing things like this in the future.

Darthjake

Now I want to go up to one of my friends and say "mammal friend" ...

sierralee

Sabitha sees nothing wrong with this. It would be an accurate statement.

sierralee

I did consider trying to get a chewing reference in there. The script for this went through a lot of editing.

sierralee

Glad you enjoyed it. Are the things you reference comics? I didn't find anything due to confounding terms.

Lamsey

The comic is adorable, but I wonder if the humour might be lost on people who aren't familiar with Sabitha's world view yet. Things like this would make a good addition to the Art Pack, and could also be nice to include as a bonus download for the Yarra's Thanks DLC (some other games do stuff like this, e.g. the special editions of Endless Legend / Endless Space have bonus PDFs with concept art, comics, etc). The updates to New Canisan and the mine exterior look good to me. It might be an idea to make the support beams in the mine interior partially transparent, so that it's clear that they don't block travel. I like the use of the glowing crystals to give a source of ambient light. The Dungeon Of Dreams looks really good. Bonus marks if you go through and add flavour text for all the paintings, mirrors, etc. That could make it a more interesting map to explore and break up the monotony of all the combat, which will be drawn out if the player is conserving mana to make it through without needing to visit the healing pool. The god rays for the Dreamer are a nice touch, given that they're basically the gods of the Fables. The golden trees in the Order exterior are very striking. The plants look OK, but the placement of the ones outside the gate is a bit odd; you'd think the Order would have cleared them out of the path immediately outside their base. It might look better if they were moved to the edges of the trees, to be more Orderly. The cells in the Order base would look better if the bars were casting shadows into each cell. It'd make them feel a bit more forbidding than the rest of the brightly-lit base. The banners with the Order logo are a nice touch. The stairs in the south-west of the first floor of the Order base are the wrong way round. You'd need to jump across to the top step.

The comic is cute and fun, but I'm not sure it can be used for promotion. It feel a lot like an inside joke to me. We get it because we know sabitha way of thinking, but someone new to TSL may not get the fun. For example, I showed it to my girlfriend, she did not get it. Also, it can be kind of a spoiler for people who did not play the latest version. After all, for a long time, we didn't know what would be the fate of sabitha in the game. I think that this kind of comics could have a lot of value to introduce new player to the game, but they should focus on the 4 first characters (Qum, Aka, Yarra and Simon), which would make them spoiler free. Also, those characters are more relatable to people non familiar with TSL I think.

sierralee

I knew this one would be inaccessible to a lot of people, but hadn't thought about how it could serve as a spoiler. I think the Sabitha twist is a solid one, too, so that's enough to make me reconsider. In theory such comics could serve as promotion, but that was never really my aim. I think the ones that would be most generally accessible would also be the ones that would most duplicate content in the game, which isn't where my interest lies. These will probably remain as amusements for patrons.

sierralee

It will certainly be in the art pack, wherever else it goes. I considered putting some images in the Steam DLC, but I couldn't figure out how to upload files like that on Steam's back end. Thanks for the detailed feedback on the maps; I'll ask for some changes based on those thoughts. Flavor text for everything... I don't know. It'd take a lot of creativity to add it for a bunch of random assets the mapper threw in.

This made my day. I was just angry at something not working right and this flipped my mood.

Decanter

I agree with everything Lamsey said, except the tree placement, which is fine with me even though admittedly a real fortress would probably care about it. The only criticism I remember for Canisan was that it's weird for a weathervane not to be at the top of the roof, which it still isn't in this version. Wonder why only some of the rocks glow. The labyrinth is pretty and I agree that we need flavor text for all the things, especially the orbs. Also while it's probably a golden platter or something I'm choosing to believe the Dreamer just stuck some lone giant-ass gold coins in the treasure piles to represent extreme greed and biting off more than one can chew, because the thought makes me giggle. Wonder what the magic circle runes say. The Order forest is nice. If we approach the gate in-game I think the camera should pan up so we can see the pretty tower. Within, the tower is redder than I expected but it looks good.

sierralee

Thanks for the feedback. Rock glowing: heck if I know. I had already planned to pan over the tower, but having it happen when you approach the gate is interesting.

SantaTheHutt

Love the comic. Sabitha is such an awesome character.

Grim8P

OEA maps look great! Nothing stood out to me to provide feedback on. I really enjoyed the TLS comic. I would be happy to see more if you had other ideas. Good luck on the OEA trailer and with your book launch!

Quiet Stranger

This comic was absolutely delightful. Please make more! I would love to see more of these little TLS shorts.

Leveler All

Poor aka she went through so much and still has to keep a chill face xD

Rachnera

The comic is funny, and indeed perfectly incomprehensible if you haven't played the game. Reminds me a bit of the Fire Emblem 4koma mangas, that take for granted you're a fan of the game and know it well already. For that reason, I wouldn't really worry about spoilers, as it seems super unlikely anyone who has played enough TLS to know who Sabitha is (so basically up to Chapter 4) but not enough to know about her actual personality (so finished Chapter 4) will accidentally stumble on this comic at that exact time of their playthrough.

Yo, I like Sabitha's expression in panel 3. So Annikath can draw husky and intense! Please use it in some ingame art so it's not all happy bliss friendship smiles all the time! For the sake of Riala at least!

sierralee

I do like Annikath's expressions. Hopefully we'll be able to continue increasing the emotional range of the game.

Jeez, don't have a cow, Aka...
