The Once Ever After release is moving along. Wearyingly so, but I'm doing the best I can. $10 backers, I just uploaded a version 0.4.3, so feel free to check that out. If this clears up the Red Arena issue, a pretty large portion of the game should be double-checked bug free now.

Due to issues caused by new maps, I'm not going to add any more of them piecemeal: they'll all go in together as one huge batch, before I do final testing. Therefore current mapping will focus on establishing the basics for many different Tales, in order to have them for screenshots/trailers.

This post has two: the proposed basic look for the frozen tale and for New Canisan. Please provide any feedback regarding aesthetic or tile choice now, so it can influence all the other maps.

Anyway, for those who haven't tried it, here is a big list of all the new content in the OEA release...

0.4.0 Changes

- Final plot update

- All sex scenes added

- All chibi scenes added

- Placeholder music replaced with 53 new non-RTP tracks

- Replaced all 30 RTP default sound effects with unique ones

- All custom battlebacks

- All custom NPC faces, edited NPC sprites

- Brand new fancy title screen

- New windows and menu format

- Non-RTP equipment icons

- Custom balloon/emotion icons

- 95% of battle animations replaced with non-RTP animations

- Attacks in combat now include sprite movement

- Placeholder battlers all removed, many unique battlers commissioned

- Misc tweaks: different treasure acquisition, new battle results plugin, new fonts, etc

Probably most people will assume it's RTP anyway, but I tried. T-T

Keep at it Sierra! I promise I'll get you an email of feedback soon. I'm really enjoying it. :) 1 like = 1 headpat for Ulfina

JJS

So when the work with this is all done we'll hear more about TLS? I'm excited to see what you'll come up with.

sierralee

Realistically, the work on OEA will trail off instead of ending. I intend to move on from it as soon as I've done the core work (I expect some long emails). I will begin working on other things, and TLS 0.56.0 is my next priority.

Quiet Stranger

It's crazy to think on how much Once Ever After has changed, since I played through the original demo. Just looking at the screenshots makes it seem like an entirely different game. I'm looking forward to playing.

JJS

Yes that map looks more detailed than anything in TLS.

Decanter

Frozen Tale looks good. If I had to complain about something I think the bare trees would look cooler with some icicles. No pun intended. New Canisan looks okay but less inspired or organic than other custom maps we've seen. Also very dingy and depressing. Not one to highlight in promotional material, I'd say.

What's the max int you can get, and how do you get it? I'm stuck at 140 for a while now. Also, been getting my ass kicked by some fights - not sure how to improve Ingrid and the party further without a frightening amount of grinding, especially against the Blight Wolf, the Grim Town Abomination, or the higher-end Red Arena fights. Also, Ulfina's Tale Mark 2 - it's doable up until the last group of enemies before the portal, who kills party members *way* too fast to counter with. They go first, and unless all three Funny Birds each target a different character, someone *will* die and another will be left near-death. Which snowballs against you. It wouldn't be that bad if you could save beforehand, but you can't - which means a failure has you running the entire dungeon again. It's not that long, but given how luck-based it is atm it's still too much.

sierralee

Okay, so you're through the first ending and at endgame. Which dungeons and optional quests have you done since then? Some are far easier than the ones you mention, which are intended to be superbosses. If you've done almost everything and feel that way, then it's an entirely different balance issue. Ulfina's Tale is meant to be more a middle area, so I'll take that into account. Can you tell me what your characters' Agility stats are? I'll potentially work on balance here. As for Ingrid's intelligence, the max is 200 but not everyone will be able to reach that. You can hit about 150 at most by the first ending, then new options open up. I'm not sure where to direct you. At that stage of the game, getting new postgame accessories is where a lot of your strength comes from.

Dubsington

Any plans on releasing a Mac version? RPGM will generally play under emulation, but it's ugly and clunky.

sierralee

Sure, I can. But tell you what, I'll put it out with version 0.4.4, which should be much more polished.

Is it intended that the Slayer and Guard Archetypes are locked on only using the Iron Basket? I would think that since Slayer is Brunhilde's she could use the steel axe and guard yeah. I will admit to being frustrated when all Ingrid could do was attempt to heal take damage instead of someone else, except wait, they didn't take any damage, and all she was good for was letting Wilhelm go twice. That changed alot once you get the Woodsman archetype. Also I'm at 95 int atm, I'm guessing more Int comes later in the game. I only did the bookshelf jumping jacks to see what the conversation was like and decided that the loss to int was not worth the potential corruption. I am enjoying the game at this moment, even with it being a long, hard grind. :D Edit: Should you be able to remove your slut nature before Hood tells you too on the first game? I had loaded a save after talking to Hood, and on a whim removed the nature before being rescued by her in the tunnels.

sierralee

The Slayer archetype should be able to use axes, could you double check? That wasn't what I intended for Guard, but since you bring it up... I'll actually alter a number of these minor archetypes, making them more flexible. Right now they all use baskets (which doesn't make sense) and they could stand to be more useful anyway. Just to check, did you get the Violence skill? There are a number of abilities/equipment you can get in Bangville that will make Ingrid more useful, and they'll also synergize with the Woodsman archetype. >Also I'm at 95 int atm, I'm guessing more Int comes later in the game. I only did the bookshelf jumping jacks to see what the conversation was like and decided that the loss to int was not worth the potential corruption. I worried about this, since it's a rational reaction but I really want the twist. Basically: all stat changes prior to Ingrid's corruption flipping are fake. You get credit for interacting with as many things as possible, and none of them actually hurt you. >Edit: Should you be able to remove your slut nature before Hood tells you too on the first game? I had loaded a save after talking to Hood, and on a whim removed the nature before being rescued by her in the tunnels. Completely intentional.

genericname12345

New line of conversation - but does the Grimmton Girl fairy dust event give 5 int? Because otherwise not sure where you could get more. The bimbo potion opened up a few new things, but not enough yet to scratch out up to 160 where it feels like a milestone (since Lonely House orgy + more Forge equipment).

sierralee

To be completely honest with you, the way this game has been done in bits and pieces over several years, I don't have a comprehensive list of all sources of intelligence. That said, some of the high requirements seem more unreasonable than I expected, so all of them are being nerfed in version 0.4.4.

WaxerRed

I have beaten the red arena! I can say this section of the game has improved my feelings on the games combat system! A lot of that is of course due to it feeling a lot like a puzzle most of the time. With it being more of a matter of finding HOW to beat the bosses and push forward. Especially the solo cups. Brute force will only bring you so far. It really challenges you to find the best character for the fight. Then beyond that some fights had me playing with different equipment and archetypes I'd never use in general play but came quite in handy for the specific fights! And I love for the group fights as well! The work you put in to have the fights come off as different is also appreciated! With lots of creativity in the mix. My favorite was the djin fight! Even if it was a little buggy :) A text box saying "Turn" kept popping up. The Djin's timer also seemed a bit random, sometimes it would take several turns to regain it's magic. And on one occasion it actually regained the power the same instant it lost it. The final fight against two girls a woodman and a wolf with a 'similar' set of powers was also a fun touch! Bug with both solo and group cups, beating the final wrung will have the wall reappear in the cup room telling you that you need permission to fight. Other major bug I should say in that in the solo fight against the champion, if you pick one fighter and lose, then pick a new fighter the game will lock up with a fight starting but your character not appearing. However with a heavy heart, (as I use this move to cheese through a lot) I have to tell you that Hood's bind ability is hella broken. In group fights it's not to bad and even a necessity sometimes in crowd controlling big fights. However against solo bosses well... I'm assuming a lot of people in the red areana will want their money back after the Champion fight had hood hold down the champion with bind indefinitely while the other 3 just wailed on him without a scratch of damage. I will say I loaded a save and beat him with honor afterwards, not using the bind ability! Which is a much better fight! Their are a few other fights who are broken by bind, namely Bloody Ingrid form one and form two can both be stunlocked forever by bind. HOWEVER while I do hope you give final form champion an immunity to bind, please do keep the solo fight champion as is. I feel like a strategy of binding the wolf over and over again doing 200 damage per turn 60 turns in a row is a legitimate strategy just in terms of creativity! But overall I really really loved the arena and think this is where the combat of the game is at it's best 10/10!

sierralee

I'm glad to hear that! I certainly put a lot of work into trying to make the Red Arena fights diverse and interesting. Djinn Fight: This one is really making RPG Maker do something that it doesn't want to do, since events like the djinn revival operate on "turns" but the ATB combat system operates on ticks. I'm not sure there's a good way around the fact that I can only run the revival logic at the start of an official turn, which could be a variety of numbers of ticks from the current action. The testing box when RPG Maker counts a turn definitely wasn't supposed to appear, though! I believe the permission wall reappearing is related to the old champion bug, but I'm not completely sure. Repeating the solo fight... oh, it looks like the event doesn't properly reassemble your party. Good bug to have caught! Bind is a major mistake on my part. The original ATB system was quite broken, allowing for easy stun-locking, and Decanter very kindly wrote me a plugin to allow turn manipulation to happen more intelligently. But I simply failed to make Bind operate on the new system, so it's doing something that no ability in the game was meant to do. It was meant to be on par with Warding Blow or Tackle, which can't affect solo bosses.

Darthjake

Hmmm, I need to try to re-create this, but Wilhelm had the Defender's Ward equiped in the New Canisan Sewer and got poisoned by one of the big rats. Edit: Yup, happened a 2nd time, by one of the slime bats.

sierralee

New Canisan monsters use a unique status effect called Filth! Local equipment can guard against it but it won't be stopped by ordinary anti-poison effects.

Darthjake

And at last they reach their destination, their hearts a mixture of purity and greed. Sorry, but I needed the lootz. :D

WaxerRed

Possible bugs but not sure! Is the Qum x Ulfina meant to appear after completing the arena? And is the "Fairy Necklace" one gets from the Hoodton boulder puzzle not the Fairy item the grimtown girl is looking for?

sierralee

>Is the Qum x Ulfina meant to appear after completing the arena? In the gallery? If so, it's a bug that's been fixed. >And is the "Fairy Necklace" one gets from the Hoodton boulder puzzle not the Fairy item the grimtown girl is looking for? The quest is bugged: not that item, but one that was supposed to be in the same place.

Darthjake

Okay, so I found my way under Hoodtown, and I'm getting my ass kicked by the mob of a Keeper and 2 spectral knights? They all 3 move before me and the 2 hit combo of the knights combined with the healing of the keeper is putting my party down. If they don't kill Hood in the first round, she rarely gets to bind the keeper and if she's not getting hit they are putting down my heavy hitters. Wilhelm has the lowest agi @ 90, Hood is 114, Ulfina @ 103 and Ingrid @ 132, I'm not sure what I need to do here, been working on their archetypes, and the only one I missed so far is the one from New Canisan as I opted to get Wilhelm better protection so he would be immune to filth.

WaxerRed

Out of the four goals Under Hoodton was the hardest in my opinion. I recommend an first going to save Ferris, doing the side quest for Frieda, and exploring a bit into grimtown through the other portal in the killing fields.

Darthjake

What exactly does the Lamp offer? Now that I've freed Fenris and ascended to the top of the Order tower, (I'm glad I went back down first to get all those optional fights that were kicking my butt at first....) an Artifact sounds easy enough as does wealth, health, and skill but what does magic grant?

sierralee

It's maximum MP. If you save before buying the Lamp, you can test out all of them, if you want.

Rachnera

Time: Reached first ending after around 20 hours. Bug: This one is probably already reported/fixed since it's hard to miss, but just in case: If you try to replay the first ending a second time, the game softlocks when Ingrid should "wake up". It's quite weird actually, the character sprites are not visible on the map, you can still access the menu, and while you can move around, it feels more like you're controlling the camera and you cannot interact with anything. QoL: Healing Water in Under Hoodton dungeon please. You can freely travel back to Brunhide, so it won't change the balance, but it makes it a bit more tedious (enemies hit hard if you do it early). Nitpick: The chest with Mr. Wolf Key always has its closed appearance if we go back to see it. I don't have epilepsy but the flashing light reds in the fire dungeon are getting old fast. The enemies respawning in paths the player will often travel (like near Brunhilde's house or at some of the labyrinthine dungeons' crossroads) were already not very nice, but the one IN A VILLAGE is really pushing it. Bloody Bones have no description. Both forms of Violent Ingrid in the first ending can be rendered unable to do anything if Hood cast Bind on them at each of her turn.

sierralee

Thanks for the information and reports! The ending repeat issue is hopefully fixed, and the Bind skill is completely broken in its current form. Healing water in that dungeon... I'll consider it, but I think the new order might change the feel for the dungeon. I've edited some respawning enemies in the Labyrinth Tale and Canisan Mine in response to feedback. I hadn't considered the one near Brunhilde's house, since that one moves randomly and doesn't chase. The one in Grimmton... I don't know, I'm fond of the idea of the village itself feeling unsafe, but that might not be a good idea regardless.

WaxerRed

Other bugs, sorry if they have already been reported! The Fenris/hood/Brunhide scene won't have it's picture shown, instead it's just a black screen. It's fine in the galley. Upon leaving the snow palace after beating the Ice queen for real this time, it would never stop snowing even when returning to hoodton. The enemies in the crucible of the abstract seem very hard even by end game standards. They also seem immune to having their "charge" ability interrupted.

sierralee

The screen stays black while the text plays, right? This should be a fade issue, will fix. I hope the Snow Queen issue is fixed on my end, but I still don't know where exactly the snowing starts and fails to stop. The Crucible enemies are the hardest in the entire game. I don't think any of them have invincible Charge, but they are resistant to being interrupted.

WaxerRed

Ingrid's Slut V adds 3 new skill slots, contrary to it's description of 4. I feel like the Hoodton Sphere is too deeply hidden to be of much use. It requires you to first survive through Cheerful tale, which requires corruption of -80. It also is a source of a surprising bad end which might scare some players away from coming back. I think it can be most easily fixed by having the grandmother's cabin unlocked just via reaching end game status. And I just wanted to say thank you for putting together this incredible project. I have to imagine that for all the fun we might have playing the game, going day by day finding bugs and responding to criticism might be a little less fun on your end. I want you to know it is always massively appreciated the time and effort you put in responding to even comment big and small. You are remarkable in that aspect! You really are an inspiration to how ever indie dev should be. Both in terms of project diligence and fan interaction. And hope that the culmination of this massive project is as rewarding as it should be! You created a wonderful project full of interesting settings, stories, combat, characters, and of course sex. Once ever after is an amazing game and once more I can't thank you enough SL!

Darthjake

What level do you get slut 5, or 3 for that matter, I think I'm stuck at 2 atm. I need to grind more, /sigh.
