It's been a while since we've done an update that was just focused on a single aspect of development. Since one of the things I did last week is suited to that, we'll do it.

Yhilin has updated less frequently than some other locations for a single reason: the fact that the player can control the major change of reaching the "Final Yhilin" state. Doing a lot of minor updates unrelated to the player's progress would multiply my work, so there have been fewer. I know for all the optimizers that means it's been unchanged, but I think this works best overall.

However, that doesn't mean Yhilin will remain static through the end of the game. Now that we've entered Chapter 5, if your Yhilin was already in "Final" state, it will receive an update. New dialogue for almost all NPCs, some cute little changes, and so on. Call it Final+1. In the postgame, it will update again to Final+2. If you can't finalize Yhilin until Chapter 5, your postgame scene will be Final+1. Hopefully this way all players get an updating experience regardless of when they make the change.

Since I'm already going around making all those changes, I've added a fair amount of the postgame dialogue controlled by the same variable. This is content that only those decrypting the game will see for a long time (nothing spoilery, don't worry), but it will save work down the road when I create the postgame.

Unrelated to this post, I participated in a themed ebook sale. My books along with a whole set of other fantasy titles are all free or on sale right now. You can find them all linked from this post along with synopses:

If you were waiting on a sale for my books, or if you're interested in any of the others, now is a good time to pick them up!

Looking forward to seeing The Last Yhilin: The Final final of Final Yhilin: Final Chapter

Trevor

Cool stuff about Yhilin. I've become rather attached to the place and I like that it isn't fading into the background as the rest of the world marches on. A question about the Final + 1 and Final +2 states. Will these only trigger on chapter transitions, such as 4-> 5 or 5->Postgame? Also will Yhilin still have a degree of "currentness" regardless of the state that it is in? For example will some NPCs in Yhilin Finial (current version) comment on Ch 5 stuff for players who don't trigger it in early chapter 4? Eagerly looking forward to the next open world section. Got pron to spend and am looking forward to how things are progressing in certain places. I hope that Tanurak's subtle touch is having an impact in some areas. If the worst that he does is toss spider at us (nasty, nasty spiders to be fair) then he isn't really being enough of a dick imo.

The updates to Yhilin will be on chapter transitions, yes. Its degree of currentness will be similar to what it was in Chapter 4: some, but less than many locations. Any chapter-based updates will happen across all states, it's just more of a pain to create them.

So we won't find the bit where Janine, seeing Tak'Kan actually work, reforms Yhilin into a democracy and retires to Simon's estate where she tends to a flower garden when they aren't going to the opera?

JJS

Basically you're saying that for those who achieve a "final" state in chapter 4 will see 2 extra upgrades for yhilin in chapter 5?

For all the stuff you have in this awesome game, you are going to have to think about making an old school Nintendo power strategy guild. Like the one for FF1. Yes I'm old. Lol

What about completely wrecked Yhilin? Will they finally rebuild without my help? And i tried so hard to make it in ruins in the first place...

sierralee

There will be a massive amount of work left for the postgame. Because I won't need to follow up branching paths with duplicated work, a variety of changes I haven't done will occur then.

sierralee

Haha, I have a bit of nostalgia for those guides too. They're fairly work-intensive to create, though, so perhaps I'd better leave it to others!

Desertopa

I'm honestly kind of amazed that you can write content for the postgame so far in advance. I probably shouldn't be; I know a lot of writers do scene writing in advance and work up to it. But conversation always feels so context-dependent to me that I really find I can only ever write conversations in order. Considering how responsive to context the content of TLS feels, I get the impression that you must have an awfully precise picture of what things are supposed to look like by the end of the game.

sierralee

Well, these are minor NPCs, so their dialogue isn't that involved. I do have a very clear picture of most elements of TLS. I generally do before I've written very much of any given story, as I'm a planner by nature. However, I find that there's a cost to writing out of order - no matter how clear my plans may be, some details change, resulting in a bunch of editing that's theoretically unnecessary.

I absolutely love your content; The Last Sovereign has become one of my favorite RPGs and I can't wait to see where it goes! Unfortunately my financial situation is changing and I can't support any more, but I will be following along, and I will be back! :D

sierralee

I'm sorry to hear about your financial situation, but I'm glad to have you enjoying my work! There will be a lot more TLS for you when you get back. ^-^

Besides the environmental stuff which I'm looking forward to in the next update. I'm more interested in combat updates in particular Carina is pretty redundant as she's a pretty slow healer (others can heal for more and faster) and the defensive buff can be done by Hilstara, and synergy skills for other characters with her aren't any good (Holy shield wall is a marginal upgrade, and healing masturbation doesn't heal for much at all) Also since Simon's absorbed the IK's shard fully why is he only stuck with one use of King's Aura still, I know we got some new/upgraded skills at the beginning of chapter 5 but I think some of the fun is unlocking those new skills. It feels rewarding.

As a general rule, pretty much every party member are the best at a particular role, including Carina. And that means that there are several fights in the game where Carina is the clear strongest choice. Yes, Hilstara can buff defenses and yes, there are other healers. But no other character has the ability to do both, and usually fast enough to outspeed most opponents.(And while it's true that Hilstara can buff, she is so slow, that all enemies will have attacked by time she used that buff) Carina is by no means obsolete. I only got through the Eustrin Spider fight thanks to combining her buffs and heals with Vhalas debuffing
