Hello, everybody. Unusual post for unusual circumstances. I am thinking about the release of my second novel, the one $10 patrons have already gotten a chance to read. But before I do that, I wanted to update you guys and also check in on a couple things.

First, the above is my intended cover. Someone please stop me if the text is an abomination to graphic designer eyes. The artist who did the drawing declined to add the title or choose the font, so I attempted it myself, and I'm bad with that sort of thing . =/ I have no graphic designer contacts and I'm too worn down to think of trying to contact anyone new, but I don't want to handicap myself with something that looks amateurish.

Second, do we have anyone here who uses Amazon to read fantasy or especially LitRPG? The Amazon algorithm is apparently very finicky and I'd like to get things off on the right foot. Volunteer if the book seems of interest to you (description below) and you have time/inclination to review.

Like with my games, most patrons will probably be able to get a free copy, but we're not quite to the release stage yet. Gotta get all the details in order first.

Anyway, here is the novel's description:

"Bloodwraith thought of himself as an effective villain, until a single adventurer destroyed his entire lair. With his last breath, he switched bodies with the adventurer and discovered that his world was built on lies. Alien beings from another dimension were using his world as a game... and now he was one of them.

The problem is, Bloodwraith has no experience being an adventurer. He was a mage, but his new body is only good at hitting things. He relied on undead minions, but now he has no choice but to depend on other people. And worst of all, strange boxes are constantly appearing in his vision, describing the world in unfamiliar, nonsensical terms.

Taking over the world is off the table, because the alien gods might be watching. To survive, Bloodwraith will need to learn the truth about himself and his world. And that means acting like an adventurer, at least for now."

The Sarah Lin pseudonym exists to prevent SFW readers from getting offended by my adult work, but it's not exactly a secret. Still, I'm not going to announce it on the blog or other public places until the book has stabilized. So let's not go talking about this everywhere - this is an early update for you guys since you supported me in writing this book.

Text looks fine to me. and I'd be happy to volunteer to help, this story looks interesting in a meta sense.

Pete

A play on the litrpg concept, huh? Guess I will read it. Text placement is inoffensive.

Lamsey

Text looks good to me too, as does the finished cover. I think the author name could be a little bigger, though I recognise that'll be tricky in terms of framing. You could try increasing the letter spacing if you're concerned about alignment or blocking the detail in the lower part of the image.

Happy to have volunteers, but I should emphasize again that I'll need two waves of support. The second will be anyone who is willing to read and review, but the first is about training the Amazon algorithm correctly. Apparently this can go quite poorly. The classic example is that if all your aunts buy a copy to support you, but they only use Amazon to buy gardening books, Amazon will show the book mostly to people who want gardening books. They'll ignore it, the algorithm will see the low click-through rate, and thus it will stop being recommended to anyone. That's why for the first wave I'm looking for people who use their Amazon accounts for this sort of book specifically. Almost all patrons will get a copy, though, and a ways down the road I'll be happy to take as many reviews as I can get!

sierralee

Yup! I forget which posts I've mentioned this and in how much detail, but I felt like I had an idea worth giving a shot. Whether or not LitRPG fans or readers in general like it remains to be seen.

sierralee

The name is mainly small because I view my name as non-information, since nobody knows it. If a book cover is a movie poster, you only put the big name actors on it. I read a lot of fantasy books on Amazon, but only a handful of those have been Lit-RPGs. I have no idea how the algorithms work, but if that's enough then I would love to help.

sierralee

That's good enough, I think! You gave good feedback before, so I'd be happy to have you read this one too.

Taium

It's not in Comic Sans, that's already a win.

Anonymous

I think the text could probably use some help, but it's not completely terrible. The spacing on the all-caps is probably a bit too tight and the kerning could use a bit of adjustment.

Anonymous

Amazingly enough, there are actually some not entirely ridiculous arguments for using comic sans as a readability/accessibility font for dyslexics :P

sierralee

Thanks for the feedback! I'm entirely open to improvements, but I'm a bit limited in my options. I made the cover in Paint.net, so while I suppose I could adjust the kerning via manually moving the letters, I'm afraid I'd end up mangling them.

frogg

I've been reading a bunch of LitRPG on Amazon lately, and I'd love to help out :)

Grey Wolf

From the description is this the Genre that Yahtzee Croshaw's Mogworld fit into? Never gave it a shot but later when you want people who don't use amazon primarily for egregiously overpriced college textbooks I hope to give it a shot, though I would probably want to read The Brightest Shadow first. Having read the entirety of the wheel of time TBS sounds a bit more in my wheelhouse, really though after 14 books TLS is almost therapeutic in the way in which the protagonist nearly always acts in a measured and mature way, where the three boys are anything but that.

sierralee

Mogworld definitely hits most of the same tropes. It was traditionally published before the subgenre took off on Amazon, but it would be categorized that way today. Anyway, I appreciate your interest! As for the characters of TBS... they're younger and less experienced than Simon, but I prefer to write reasonable people. I never like to insult anyone's entertainment, but I will say that the characters were not my favorite part of Wheel of Time.

onodera

Hi, Sierra. I've just finished the novel and I wanted to ask if you wanted to have a straight LitRPG or a deconstruction. I've grown accustomed to TLS and Ouroboros thoroughly subverting established tropes, but the novel felt like you were playing most of them straight.

sierralee

The NPC protagonist is meant to be a different angle, but I wouldn't call it a deconstruction, no.

Hey, Just finished the book and I gotta say... I loved it. I have read/listened to a shit ton of litrpgs and this is like in my top10 already. So yeah, basically the only thing that is sad about this whole thing is that there is not like 10+ books out already. Good job.

sierralee

Thanks, glad to hear you liked it! Please leave a review if you're so inclined!

Stijn Van Hove

I read a ton of haremlit and litrpg on Amazon. Aiming for at least two books a week, more depending on length. I'll give it a try (it's actually showed up in my recommendations a couple of times the last few days) but I guess seeing it posted here I was hoping it'd be an NSFW litrpg :-p

sierralee

I might do a NSFW series yet, but in the end I felt like it didn't fit into this book. I do somewhat feel like I haven't done enough market research on the haremlit subgenre to be sure what readers want. Anyway, I hope that you enjoy the book if you give it a try!

Jack3246

just ordered the paperback copy off amazon, cant wait to read it

sierralee

Thanks! Glad to hear someone will be getting some use out of the paperback version.

Secular Reason

Hey Sierra, I read on Amazon a ton - LitRPG, Wuxia/Xianxiz, Fantasy, etc, etc, etc... And I always buy a copy of your games on Steam even if I get them here anyway, so I wouldn't mind buying the book in Amazon once it's up there. Just shoot me a message when it's ready for purchase! ...Although now I'm wondering what makes this a "New Game MINUS" and am reading FAR too much into the cover lol. Mindfuckery - it's your specialty, and it's why I support you.
