RIP Liz Sladen 💔💔💔

Azmat Mahmood

Wow, this is a surprise. I think this is a great episode, a brilliant love letter to classic Who. Seeing Sarah Jane again was brilliant, I really like how this story explores what life is like after the Doctor. Sarah Jane being back also created an interesting dynamic between her, the Doctor and Rose. Contrary to most people, I like all the Rose and Sarah Jane bickering, primarily because of where it ends up with both characters coming to an understanding and having mutual respect for one another. Many people criticise Rose's character in this episode and oversimplify her behaviour and call her all sorts of names that I don't care to repeat. Personally I think a lot of Rose's jealousy is due to feeling like her experiences with the Doctor aren't unique anymore. Think back to "Rose" and the dull and mundane life Rose was shown to live. The Doctor came into her life like a whirlwind and completely transformed it. You have to understand why this would've had such an impact on Rose, she grew up without a father. The Doctor became a father figure to Rose in the sense that he guided her, showed her a better way of living and gave her life a sense of purpose that wasn't there before she met him. It's hard for Rose to accept that the Doctor might've had a similar relationship with anyone else, that she's one in a long line of women the Doctor's taken with him. That's immature, but she's only supposed to be 19/20 and that line of thinking makes sense for Rose's character considering the loss of her own father. Besides, it's been well established that Rose is led by emotions and is quite impulsive. Her actions in episodes like "Father's Day" and "The Parting of the Ways" are driven by those very same things. It's also undeniable that Rose has grown to love the Doctor and it's only natural for her to react that way in this situation. Quite clearly she feels threatened by another women's presence, especially considering the fact that Sarah Jane and the Doctor have previous history. However, I think there's another dimension to Rose's behaviour that many people don't seem to get. Rose's attitude was also driven by an insecurity. The knowledge that Sarah Jane and the Doctor were once as close as she and the Doctor are now and had all of these amazing adventures scared her. The Doctor had all of these amazing adventures with Sarah Jane, but then just dropped her off, moved on and hardly ever mentions her now. To the point that Rose never even knew she existed. Rose fears that's her future because if the Doctor can do that to Sarah, what's stopping him from doing the same to her? However, the Doctor knows he won't have Rose forever and justifies why he leaves his companions by telling her, "you can spend the rest of your life with me, but I can't spend the rest of mine with you. I have to live on. Alone. That's the curse of the Time Lords." This reasoning makes sense, but it's also really sad and highlights how tragic the Doctor's existence has become after he was forced to wipe out the time lords. He promises he won't ever leave Rose, but deep down he knows the day will come, when she's no longer by his side. Rose is also conflicted. First she had to deal with the loss of her Doctor and had to get used to this new man (which is why she got back together with Mickey after breaking up with him in "The Parting of the Ways") and now she's confronted by all of these harsh, hard truth. She even shows some maturity because as much as she felt threatened by Sarah Jane's presence, she eventually tried to be the bigger women and tried to patch things up with her. This was clearly in an attempt to find common ground in regards to the Doctor. Rose needed someone she could talk to, someone who went through the same things as she did. She even asked Sarah Jane for advice and whether she should stay with the Doctor or not. Which shows how much she's been affected by everything she's learned about the Doctor over these past few episodes and how unsure she is about her relationship with him. Of course, Sarah Jane advises Rose to stay because "some things are worth getting your heart broken for", advice which Rose takes to heart. This story also makes it clear why the Doctor needs his companions. They stop him from going off the rails. The Doctor very nearly gave into the power offered to him by Finch, which hints at the inner darkness of this incarnation of the Doctor. It takes Sarah Jane to talk him to his senses. She makes him understand that pain and loss define life as much as happiness or love, which is clearly designed to be an allegory for the relationships between the Doctor and his companions. A good way to tie the whole story together thematically. This is a really interesting story that I never get tired off. Next episode is another classic, can't wait!

Sarah Jane came on board in 1973 and travelled with two of the iconic Doctors of the classic era. For David, working with Lis Sladen, not to mention K9. was a childhood dream come true. I will confess she was my first crush as a kid.

Paul Mason

The headmaster was Anthony Stewart Head, Giles from Buffy and also Rupert Manion from Ted Lasso. David Tennant knew Sarah Jane from being a Doctor Who fan as a child. So his reaction to her in this episode was partly him channeling that joy from meeting a childhood hero. Toby Whithouse is a recurring writer who's written some excellent episodes. He created a show called Being Human about a ghost, a vampire and a werewolf that live together. He didn't write on Classic Who, so this was the first time he wrote Sarah Jane.

Ben

You may recognise Mr Finch from Ted Lasso - he is a certain Rupert Mannion! Also Sarah Jane isn't just a companion she is THE companion and is affectionately known as 'Our Sarah Jane' within the fandom.

I adore this episode, it's such a nice way to pay tribute to one of the most loved classic companions, and it's great way to tie the continuity together in a way that isn't negative like returning villains. What's great is that this episode was written in a way that you don't have to know prior who Sarah-Jane is to feel the feelings it wants you to.

Mindstalker

Is there a trick to get this synched? Tried it several times for several episodes (also watching on Amazon) but even when it starts in synch it gets out of synch real quick (good to see when scenes cutting to another one).

Hugh Diffey

Given the topic of the episode it's funny that you spent the intro talking about which Doctor you love and by how much

Mindstalker

Also, I dont have the short Black and White BBC Intro Animation at the Start of the Episode (I think those are when you're watching via BBC channel on Prime? I bought the series on Prime and maybe thats the reason for the missing Intro?) but the synching still should be possible?

A Blip In The Universe

possibly a case of mislabeling which one is Amazon/DVD and which is Max/Bluray? Had that happen to me on one other episode. Couldn't get the DVD version to sync up with mine but the Bluray version did, watching on Vudu.

MertzRocks

After Sarah Jane, there were (in canon) ten women, two men, K9, and an android before Rose. The Doctor never talked later about any of them either...

Mindstalker

Could be the case. What´s the difference in the uploaded videos anyways? It´s the same reaction so I was wondering.

A Blip In The Universe

The FPS. British TVs run at either slightly higher or slower FPS than US TVs, can't remember which. But that all stops with the switchover to HDTV, when everyone goes on the same standard.

Oh dear - the doctor and his secrets - and his regenerations. Think about it. Timelords can only regenerate up to 12 times. ...but you count 15 doctors with Ncuti Gatwa. It's obvious a bigger secret - but one I don't spoiler and dare anyone, who does. 😉 But now! Enjoy next "The Girl in the Fireplace" - it's one of my alltime favorites!

I wasn't alive in the '70s so I didn't see Sarah Jane when she was actively on the show. I saw NuWho first and I remember liking this episode but I didn't fully grasp the gravity of it. It wasn't until I actually went back and watched classic Who on Britbox that I truly fell in love with Sarah Jane and then when I re-watched NuWho along with Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures I had such a bigger appreciation for the universe and now, especially after Elizabeth Sladen's passing, it just breaks my heart when she's on screen because now I get it. And David Tennant grew up with classic Who and I believe he said on The Graham Norton show that he actually had a Tom Baker doll and he is a Doctor Who trivia genius, like he knows everything! He grew up with Sarah Jane and then actually getting to work with her must have been an absolute dream of his. He actually makes a cameo at some point in the Sarah Jane Adventures, I don't remember what season, so he did get to work with her a couple times. And I'm sure the Doctor Who Vault book that you have has all the Sarah Jane secrets in it but I understand not wanting to open it because of spoilers and such but one day you'll get to see it all 😂 Anyway sorry if any of that was incoherent I just get excited about Doctor Who 😂

The wonderful Elisabeth Sladen (and K9), it was such a joy to see her return back in 2006. She is a beloved companion of classic Who and then came into her own in the Sarah Jane Adventures. The poignant exchanges between her and the Doctor, were really moving and showed what happens to companions when they stop travelling with him and he moves on.

You can definitely see love there, of course not seeing the classic version I’m not aware of what type. David and Liz did such a great job

EGT Entertainment

if anyone ever gets a chance to meet Sadie Miller, Elizabeth's daughter she is so nice.

Matthew Brench

What a sweet episode this was, and amazing to see you so touched by it without any experience/context! "I'm prepared for a stinker"... there are definitely a couple of those this season. But we all have our own likes & dislikes, so fear not :)

The casting of Anthony Head as the villain was another fun layer when the episode first aired because it’s a very Buffy-esque plot. There’s a great 90s monster movie called The Faculty that does the teachers are aliens thing too but it’s a pretty common theme of kids media. The next episode is my favourite of Tennant’s whole run.

sothcweden

I wish I could give this comment more than one heart. It's a wonderful explication of Rose's motivations, and a good reminder to anyone who forgets that Rose is only 20 here, and hasn't aged along with us since 2006. Also, shivers to the line, "I used to have so much mercy."

Elvenwitch

Without context, I must say I have never seen such a long-distance joke/theory land.

Elizabeth Sladen was the longest running companion to this point. She was with the 3rd Doctor and was their while he regenerated into the 4th, later being left behind. So technically Sarah Jane rolled with 3 different versions of the Doc. David Tennant grew up watching Doctor Who (that's also why he's able to sell the role so well because he's a lifelong fanboy.) So now, let's roll into the headcanon. I genuinely believe that the first scene with Sladen and Tennant was the first scene where they meet truly after she finds the TARDIS. So Tennant, met the most beloved companion from his childhood and Sladen who, for the first time in years, was on-screen returning to the role that made her so widely loved. I have no doubt, those reactions were truly sincere and authentic.

Slytherin Forever

I love that you are always thirsting over Tennant. You are a similar age to him - right? - So I guess it makes sense. I personally don't see it. When I first watched Doctor Who it was 2012 and I was 12. Have never been into older men. And that age I was discovering I was Bisexual. As an adult now I kinda see it - but it's also weird to think about one of my childhood idols that way ... says the woman thirsting over Karen Gillan whenever she's on screen. Maybe I just find it weird thinking about the Doctor in that way. I would use that to talk about certain plot points but spoilers. Anyway, you thirsting over David Tennant is funny and I love it.
