Is it a double dose Who a week now?? Hurrah?! [Edit] I'm happy I still find the "We are in a car" bit so funny.

Sean

Anthony Stewart Head, aka Rupert "Ripper" Giles from Buffy, plays the headmaster. I trust you have seen Buffy.

James Wallis

Sarah Jane was originally a companion to the 3rd Doctor (John Pertwee) and stayed through his regeneration to the 4th (Tom Baker). And don't worry, there is more to come for Mickey Smith (though glad he doesn't annoy you as much anymore!)

Nate Hammer

The first time I watched this episode, when the Doctor said "My Sarah Jane..." I burst into tears. Loved it. Funny thing is, while I was looking forward to Angela's reaction to Sarah Jane, I was more interested in her reaction to K9

Chris Mort

One step closer to "the girl in the fireplace" 😍😍😍

Ross Warshaw

Angela DOESN'T recognize Anthony Head?!?!?! This can only mean one thing. BUFFY REACTIONS!!!!!!!!!

Michael Nolan

Sarah Jane Smith was on the regular cast of "Who" starting with the the 3rd (my favourite!) Doctor in 1973. She was cast a couple of years before I was born - and I'm almost 50! More recently, Anthony Stewart Head was also the main villain on Ted Lasso.

Gambit3838

I'm sorry ma'am but is this a WHO reaction a full 2 days earlier than ever? Don't threaten me with a good time. 1😆

Even now, I get chills watching the Doctor and Sarah Jane’s reunion scenes here. Arguably still the most-loved companion in the show’s 60+ year history. And one of the first female companions to have a mind and career of her own, rather than being there to get into trouble and wait for the Doctor to save her. I love that you recognised, even from this one episode, just how special Lis is to the fandom and to the Doctor. David, a huge Whovian as a kid, didn’t really need to act in this episode – he loved Sarah Jane just like all the rest of us. Liz was companion to both the third and fourth doctors, although it’s her time with the fourth doctor that she’s most remembered for. She also starred in the 20th anniversary seral ‘The Five Doctors’ which brought Doctors 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 back together in one story. If you’d like to delve back into Classic Who and see Sarah Jane with Doctor 4, one of the very, very best serials was Genesis of the Daleks, which aired in 1975 (six-parter). Sarah Jane eventually left the show in 1976 after the Doctor received a summons to return to Gallifrey, but instead of dropping her off near her home in Croydon (south of London), she ended up being left in Aberdeen, hundreds of miles away in Scotland! ‘School Reunion’ neatly sets up The Sarah Jane Adventures series which ran parallel to Doctor Who for the next few years. While aimed at kids, it has the same emotional depth as the main series and the continuity is very much tied together. Well worth a watch. The fun pilot ‘Invasion of the Bane’ aired a week after Doctor Who’s 2006 Christmas special, with the excellent, main first season airing a couple of months after Doctor Who season 3 in 2007. Re Torchwood (the series), don’t start watching season 1 of Torchwood until you’ve seen this full second season of Doctor Who. Season 2 of Torchwood then comes between seasons 3 and 4 of Doctor Who. Hope that’s helpful – I know the two spin-offs complicate the viewing order sometimes! ps - don't worry about individual episodes having other writers' credits. Russell's role as showrunner involved commissioning those writers, giving them instructions, ensuring continuity and rewriting where necessary. I think Steven Moffatt's scripts were the only ones that were never subject to any rewriting during Russell's tenure.

But even the clip you post shows her walking away with no K9... So I had to do a quick hunt to find out how K9 came to be with SJ in 2006. Turns out she was given K9 in the show "K9 And Company" (1981) as seen in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMv15XKzDrM

Toby Whithouse is a new writer and didn't write for Classic. Sarah walked away from the TARDIS last with - if I remember correctly - a fluffy owl and a potted plant. Trouble is that the Doctor - Tom Baker, the 4th Doctor - dropped her off, aiming for the London Borough of Croydon and landed her 540 miles off target in Aberdeen, Scotland . . . Oops! As she she said at the time, "Travel does broaden the mind!" She did have a brief conversation with a labrador retriever that was lying and taking in the sun nearby, when she realized it wasn't South Croydon. "Hey you! - petting the dog - He goofed!" The dog wandered off and Sarah whistled off in the other direction to find transport. The tune she was whistling, "How Much Is That Doggy In The Window? - the one with the waggly tail" Lis couldn't whistle apparently and the director of her parting episode, Lennie Mayne, dubbed over. K9 MIII was a later present to Sarah which was dropped off as a mysterious package at - I think - a railway station. It's a very long time since I saw the one-off episode of K9 and Company, a very long time. Many of us fell deeply in love with Lis back then and her return to the role here and in the SJA Adventures was heartfelt by her many fans and she gained very many new ones.

Chris Padwick

Oh my. So many questions! So, PM? Yes, we do say that. Except for Boris Johnson who we tended to call 'corrupt, adulterous, lying bastard'. 'John Smith' is always the Doctor's crappy pseudonym (which he somehow thinks is really convincing). Sarah Jane was the 3rd & 4th Doctor's companion & he left her in Aberdeen which is just shy of 600 miles from Croydon ( a south London suburb). His geography is as shaky as his timing. K9 is in the Sarah Jane Adventures too and debuted with the 4th Doctor (who sent him (it? - no, him) as a gift to Sarah Jane in 'K9 and Friends' which only got a pilot episode, sadly. Okay, in my country, fries are chips & chips are crisps & while we're on the subject, jello is jelly & jelly is jam. Oh, there will be dinosaurs, my dear. The Stargate stuff = hieroglyphics. Toby Whithouse wrote the British version of 'Being Human' (which is well worth your time & tears). Elizabeth Sladen is sadly no longer with us but her daughter, also an actress, took over her role on the Big Finish audio books. David Tennant also wrote a moving tribute to her in the preface of her autobiography. The next 5 eps are just astonishing. Not a spoiler but net up is a Moffat!

Thianna Noordzij

Crisps are crispy, chips are fries :) I was aware of the existence of Sarah Jane Smith and was a New Who watcher. David Tennant is a Mega Dr Who fan so for him it was a very real reaction to seeing her. The SJA is more of a kids show but it's enjoyable.

Tuckgrr (Doctor Nerderer)

David Tennant grew up watching the 4th Doctor and Sarah Jane. 10's reaction to seeing Sarah was Tennant's genuine reaction to seeing Elisabeth Sladen in person

MertzRocks

Yeah are we doing two a week now? Don't threaten ME with a good time either! :D

David Vandervliet

Sarah never traveled with the Doctor and K9. A slight spoiler….. k9 came 2 years later. But in 1981 a Christmas special called k9 and company came out that was the 1st attempted spinoff for Dr Who that had Sarah get a k9 of her own as a present from the Doctor

Russell Crockett

When I first watched this episode I didn’t recognize Liz Sladen but I knew of Sarah Jane Smith. Most of the old who reruns I saw on.PBS were docs 6 and 7 but there were the occasional 4 and 5 serials. It wasn’t until about the third season of new who when I finally watched the first 3 Doctors.

Amy

What a treat, an early episode! Are you implying that you haven't seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer... yet? 👀

funnylilgalreacts

Believe me, the text I sent to Xander losing my shit that I didn’t recognize Rupert and was unhinged 😂😭 I was like “they’re gonna ROAST me!”

Ross Warshaw

Ang...I know Buffy seems to be overplayed as far as reaction series go. But for good reason. While Season 1 def has some "growing pains," it is a phenom series with some of the best TV ever written. You should certainly put it on your short list!

Chris Saguisag

Great reaction, and glad you like two of my favorite companions from Classic Who. Looking forward to the next reaction. :)

James Miller

K9 wasn't on the tardis during Sarah's tenure. It was on a spinoff attempt they had the doctor leave a K9 with her (I haven't actually seen that spinoff)

Rester

Notes from a Doctor Who fan: I'll keep this short, because I think most people have said the big details. 1) Sarah Jane is, I believe, the second-longest running companion of all of Doctor Who. The longest running was 2nd-Doctor era, so back in black-and-white TV times, before the time of a lot of folks today who watched Classic when it released. As such, Sarah Jane is arguably *The Companion* when it comes to the show as a whole. 2) Knowing how you pre-record these, you have already seen the next episode, so I don't have to worry about over-hyping it:- I said it on the last episode, I'll say it again, one of my absolute favourites coming up next.

Joey Visser

Ohh you should Watch Buffy, I just know for a Fact you would Friggin LOVE Buffy!

MertzRocks

You know just how to tell us -- without TELLING us -- that you've seen an episode, don't you? Just one more reason to call you my favorite creator! IDK just when you surpassed my old fave but it had to be quite a while ago now.... :D

Ruth

Oh, I can’t wait till the next episode one of my favorites! Some truly excellent acting from David Tennant and I can’t wait to see you experience it for the very first time 💜

Cody Barnes

Buffy hands down on of the best series. You got to watch it, just for youself.

Aslaug Sofie Ogilvie

I always tear up when David Tennant looks absolutely awestruck with Elizabeth Sladen. He was such a big fan of her as the Doctor’s companion when he was a kid, and now he gets to work alongside her. So happy for David and his chance to live out a childhood dream through here❤️❤️❤️

David Vandervliet

It’s called K9 and company and is included on the dvd of Invisible Enemy(k9’s first story) and I believe is available on BritBox and maybe Tubi

David Vandervliet

A fun note about Rupert Giles, I am sure you know him from Ted Lasso, and as many point out he’s a major actor in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But most folks don’t know is that he was among those considered for the 8th Doctor in the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie. He also has done a series of Audio Doctor Whos called Excelis where he appeared opposite the Fifth Sixth and Seventh doctors.

Anders Thomsen

You have to remember to The Doctor, it's more like: Talk about all your old girlfriends, but they all died... except you're a time traveler so not really.

SJ Jobe

just for context on the Doctor and Sara Jane. he was roughly just over 200 years old when he was with her. he is now over 900

Carl Wilson

This episode makes me cry too, mostly because it finally talks about the way the Doctor(s) treats past companions. (I'm going to use "they" for the Doctor(s) here.) I mean, there are myriad different ways they part, and sometimes it's not possible. But being a lonely quasi-immortal is really the *opposite of an excuse for not coming to visit their old friends now and then later in their lives. YOU'RE A TIME TRAVELER! Why not do it? For both of you? It doesn't have to be on screen. But the way the Doctor(s) usually treat it, one can only think they're kind of an adventure addict who treats non-adventuring people as if they were boring, any non-adventuring interaction the equivalent of small talk at a party. It goes with their arrogance and frequent emotional obtuseness. But it's unfair to the deep connections and with someone like Tennant it's hard to believe they don't know better.

Carl Wilson

I think over time Sarah Jane is the person who met the most versions of the Doctor, no?

Carl Wilson

I also cry because Elisabeth Sladen (who, with all the episodes and the spinoff and so on, did so much over many decades with Doctor Who) died sadly young at 65, in 2011. It was pancreatic cancer, a cruel disease I've lost friends to. She was gone so fast that (I hope this doesn't count as a spoiler) the spinoff just cut off there.

Carl Wilson

BTW this is the 1981 pilot for "K-9 and Company," a Who spinoff with Sarah Jane that never continued. She'd left Who five years before, and K-9 had been introduced to appeal to younger kids in the meanwhile. The credits are *so hilariously 1981 TV. As is the whole gimmicky idea really. I'm not old enough to have tracked all of this when it happened, but I am old enough to have childhood memories of 1981 TV in general. But the show itself is not so bad! https://vimeo.com/795771454

Justin Smallwood

The doctors relationship in the classic series was always strictly platonic… the slight hint that Sarah Jane had romantic feelings towards the doctor are completely left field. They were always best friends…

Justin Smallwood

For the doctor it’s been hundreds of years since he left Sarah Jane behind. For sarah it’s been for like 20 to 30 ish years…

Anders Thomsen

On screen no, but there is that pesky little thing called "old age", you know ;)

Dustin Bailey

I watched every classic who episode I could before starting the 2005 series so when I watched this episode for the first time I almost cried with a big goofy grin when I saw Sarah Jane

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

Yeah, modern show writers just love making the doctor have romances - old doctors always seemed supremely ace. Capaldi was a breath of fresh air in that respect, 15 is also pretty horny though at least not with companions so that’s fine.

demonic-myst

serah jane was one the most beloved classic who companions so their was alot of love for this ep

demonic-myst

the tardis also changes alot

Brianna Gray

Rest in Peace, Elisabeth Sladen. This episode was fun when I first watched it (and not knowing much of Classic Who at the time). Rewatching now that I'm a bigger fan of Doctor Who, and know much more, it's an episode that has me tearing up. I once had a cat that I named K9 as well :P

Lloyd B

I grew up watching Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane with both the 3rd and 4th Doctors (yes, she went through the trauma of watching her Doctor regenerate as well), and absolutely adore her as one of my favorite companions of all eras. She and Tom Baker (4th Doctor) in particular had amazing chemistry, and you could tell they were great friends as well. Also, K9 here is voiced by the same actor who played him in the 1970s - John Leeson - and was most certainly a fan favorite while traveling in the Tardis. I do sincerely hope you react to The Sarah Jane Adventures. It really is a wonderful show, and Lis Sladen and the young cast are excellent. And if you want to see the young Sarah Jane, I strongly recommend you watch at least a couple of Classic Who stories. My recommendations would be Genesis of the Daleks and Pyramids of Mars.
