I love this episode, i really don't know why James gets so much hate, long before he was a TV show host he was an excellent actor in his younger days he's also a good friend of Matt's. Matt Smith is actually awesome at football btw, he was captain of Leciester city's(professional team) youth team and was aspiring to be a professional as a teenager but sadly was forced out due to a condition called Spondylolysis.

James as almost universally loved when he was on Gavin and Stacey, the hate started when he went to America, people think he sold out, and it feels like he lost his authenticity and relatability

He's always had a large group of haters in the UK, even during the G/S times I think maybe many purely because they hate the idea of someone who isn't stick thin doing well. His confidence drives them mad.

Your reaction to James Corden really made me laugh 😂 how did I suspect that you wouldn’t be a fan of his?! Tbh I had a soft spot for him back in the day (Gavin and Stacey which he stared in and co wrote brings a lot of nostalgia for me back in the late 2000s) and he did some great theatre work which I was lucky enough to see. But yeah his actual personality …definitely was pretty split for the British public. you really did either love him or hate him (and ALOT of people in the media did not like him) And when he made the move to America … well … you are probably aware of what happened there. Still this episode warms my heart though. You are quite right that this script could really only work for Matt’s Doctor and he is really wonderful here as usual. Knew you’d love the football bit. There is some great behind the scenes for this episode

I only like James Corden in relation with Harry Styles, because they are very good friends and has made some funny stuff with him. 😂 But otherwise I wouldn't call myself a fan in any way. I haven't seen Gavin and Stacey though, so I don't know if I would be a fan otherwise

I'm not sure I would particularly like James Corden in real life, but I can never truly dislike him because Gavin and Stacey remains one of my favourite TV shows of all time and he created it. His acting is at its peak when he's playing your average British bloke, he does it very naturally. I like this episode, you're definitely right with it being a comfort episode.
