“Now Ariana you don’t have to be so formal with me, we did go to school together. Just call me Jane like you used to,” Mrs. Anderson said, acting as if she did nothing wrong. “As for your daughter here, I meant no disrespect. I was only complimenting you on doing such a great job raising her, and her ability to take your lessons with such vigor. If I do remember you were always one for perfection, though it would seem that you have mellowed out a bit.”

“And as for asking you your reason for adopting this young girl or should I say boy; I don’t mean to be disrespectful, I truly wanted to know. I never meant to say that your choice was wrong. I just wanted to hear your answer.”

“Alice there is no need for you to keep standing,” Ariana said, motioning her daughter to sit down next to her. “I won’t lie to you Jane as we are old friends,” Ariana said, as Alice sat down next to her. “I decided to adopt Alice because of her potential. I saw that she had was able to accomplish feats far too grand for an ordinary student, her potential would have been wanted if I had decided not to adopt her.”

“Though that was only one of my reasons,” she said holding her daughter’s hand to let her know that she was being sincere. “I saw a helpless girl put into a situation that not many would be brave enough to continue to move forward in. I am certain that your family knows that Alice was once a boy named Jaden Yuki.”

“I’m sure that neither of us could understand what she went through when she changed, but she didn’t break down because of it. She stood tall and continued to move forward. I was drawn to that side of her. When my oldest daughter Alexis told me about what had happened to her it was only a matter of time before the adoption was finalized. Also, I won’t lie, but there was a part of me that wanted her because she was just too cute.”

“Just a part of you?” Jane asked looking back at Ariana with a smug look on her face.

“Fine you got me,” Ariana said, back to her. “It was a large part of me that wanted her because she was cute.”

Despite Alice’s initial impression, it would seem that her mother and Jane Anderson were actually quite close. Was Jane perhaps testing Alice to see how she would react?

“Still the same as ever,” Jane said to Ariana.

“Guilty as charged,” Ariana said back to Jane. It had been a while since they met, and she didn’t know how she would react to Alice. She was glad that her friend was more open-minded than most.
