Butcher has always been a dick, but he's also obsessive, he's been fixated on either getting revenge for or finding his wife and hasn't really cared about anything else. He kept the boys together so long as they could help him, and then ditched them the moment he finally found her. His wife saying that she didn't go to him for help because she knew exactly what he would do (and what he did do) is telling. Butcher could definitely be the villain if this story was told from someone else's perspective.
