The series really loves it's Philosophy, just this episode we get references to the French philosopher Jean- Jaques Rousseau. Rousseau believed that civilization warps the fundamental goodness of human nature. But that the ill effects of civilization could be moderated by participation in democratic consensual politics. An interesting guy to bring up, considering the whole Sybil system is based around the potential latent criminality of its citizens. Plato also gets a mention, specifically his theory of forms or idea. Basically the belief that everything in the world is just an imperfect copy of a perfect original. It's this philosophy that drives the main baddy of the last two episodes, to do what he did. In his mind he created what he and the fans thought were the perfect forms of those avatars he hijacked. Though he himself is clearly an imperfect individual, with no original personality of his own.
