Ooooh these are early. My insomnia actually has done me good this time around.

Brother E

So we have arrived...been waiting for this since the beginning. Rest In Peace Ace His flame will carry on with his brother🔥

Anonymous

When I saw this for the first time I had to take a couple days break to recover. Low key Oda played us.

Brother E

Akainu: “Hey Ace, want to play a game?” Ace: “Sure, Sakazuki what game are we playing?” Akainu: “Fist The Elf! And you’re the elf!” https://imgur.com/a/gEK91TD

Tpoints

"FUCK", same man, same.

Anonymous

Poor Luffy man

Jonathan

Just woke up and I'm ready to get depressed! Edit: watched and now I'm depressed. Just like his father, and just like every D before him, he died with a smile.

Anonymous

Ah man, no matter how many times i see this episode, it hurts the same everytime

Anonymous

Bloody hell this reaction was everything I needed and more. How about Garp though? "You better keep holding me down" that line always gives me chills.

Vikar

This is hard to watch even to this day

DevilJynx

Audience: Yay! They saved Ace! Now they can escape while Whitebeard heroically sacrifices himself for his sons! What a great arc! Oda: *inhales* So about that...

Noah

Oh god. This is the worst. It's so hard to watch, and seeing you have a hard time speaking at the end, somehow made it more worse for me. I'm just gonna sit he crying for the next few hours dont mind me.

V_VMat

"Fuck!" -my thoughts exactly

GoldArthur

As sad as it was, it was also beautiful. He just wanted to know whether or not he deserved to be born. Because of the way that he died, he not only got his answer, but the answer was yes.

Anonymous

This part of the series is so well written, but so genuinely painful that I usually avoid it when I rewatch/reread parts of One Piece. Even the last few episodes are a bit hard to get through for me knowing that Ace ends up not making it.

J Johnson

If there's one thing Oda (the author) knows how to do, it's to kick you in the feels.

Chrome

damn, this episode really hit you like a ton of bricks, you really got mad at the train lol. personally for me what hit me the most is the scenes of Ace as a kid in this arc talking to garp, "did I deserve to be born" really impactful stuff to hear.

Anonymous

Not often in anime do we get a story where the protagonist's mission fails: the mission to save Ace from his execution. Other things aside, it seems like Ace's arrogance in his abilities (to some extent) and his emotions led him to go up against an admiral and jeopardise the hopes and dreams of everyone who sacrificed their lives in trying to rescue him (Oars Jr, Mr 2, the Whitebeard pirates, the allied pirates) and maybe even Whitebeard himself? But in the heat of battle, and with the emotions Ace was feeling it might be difficult to blame him. After all, he didn't die with regrets. A good discussion point.

Anonymous

What a mindfuck, this episode always gets me emotional

Anonymous

Man I remember being in 11th grade and reading this for the first time... The whole rest of the school week I was down to the point where some of my friends kept asking what was wrong. Ace was such a legend and even now I miss him

Mikestrike

I really respect that you didn't try to force yourself to make commentary through that. We all know how hard this episode is and sometimes you don't need words to express it all. Truly a great reaction as always and rest in peace Ace.

Anonymous

TIme to light a candle in front of the Ace funko on the shelf

V_VMat

I can't remember the first time I saw Ace's death in this arc, but at some point I cried more about Merry than Ace. But apparently the more times I watch this arc, the more these last episodes get to me. 😢

Anonymous

Finally got my monies worth, we need a Curtis vs Aikanu video

Johnny Kiehn

Poor Luffy. First he couldn't save his crewmates from Kuma, and then he couldn't save his brother. Oda, your storytelling is absolutely brutal...

Anonymous

This is one of the hardest episodes Curtis. Oda has this way of bringing you down to your lowest point in the most crushing ways possible, only to build everyone back up again until you beg him to stop.

Anonymous

I wonder if Akainu replaced Arlong as Curtis' most hated character lol. I would think so.

Johnny Kiehn

You don't have to apologize for the lack of commentary Curtis, this episode left us all speechless. I'm just surprised you were able to hold back the tears... I must have cried them all for you. RIP Ace, you definitely deserved to be born, but you didn't deserve to die so young...

DevilJynx

I posted a comment on his previous reaction regarding this and Arlong is still above Akainu.

DevilJynx

Yeah, I thought this would be the episode to break him.

Harry Jones

It's easy to not fully give it thought as there is a lot of emotion to process in this episode, but this is definitely the first time in the arc that Garp isn't lying through his teeth. He literally doesn't do anything for the whole fight (intentionally), and then jobs super hard against Luffy. I genuinely believe that he had full faith that they would save Ace.

Anonymous

When Luffy set out on this arc to save his brother, I'll bet it never even crossed your mind that he might succeed only for Ace to die immediately after. I know I sure didn't.

Preet

Must have seen this like 5x now and it still hurts like a bitch.

Anonymous

seeing whitebeard dropping a tear in grief for ace actually broke me

Anonymous

In this episode you learn that no one outside of Luffy's crew is safe!

Jabrone Taylor

Hey how always hits so hard because if I’m the span of a little over 100 episode luffy lost his crew found out his brother was going to killed broke into the prison to save him almost died doing it broke out the prison made it to the war where he was out classed and then freed ace and we all thought yes we are good and then ace still dies after we got that hope this one will always hurt

Yuion

ok im ready for this im not going to cry

DarkRaven

I was waiting for this episode and it was just as crushing the first time. the hardest part was ace not wanting to miss out on Luffy fulfilling his dream.

SpazBoysComedy

I’m reading all the comments as we have down time on our little vacation... I think we need to have a live stream devoted to Ace’s death when I get back.

Anonymous

It's not that he was arrogant he just doesn't like anyone bad mouthing his father

Chris Curran

this arc is my favorite but also one of the ones i hate the most due to this right here. Seeing all the crap Luffy had to go thru and all the respect he had earned from a lot of big time people was just amazing. I have to give you props you are the first reactor that ive watched to be able to keep their cool and not ball their eyes out. although i could tell you where walking a fine line of holding them back..

Jimbob

The first time I saw this episode all I could think of was Mr. 2’s final words to luffy as he sacrificed himself to open the gates. “Straw-Chan, you have to save your brother no matter what!” 😢

Anonymous

Akainu must die

Anonymous

There was an important name dropped in this episode. Sabo try to keep that in mind :)

Wishmaker007

Kakyoin time, F fire boi...

Anonymous

Its been a long time since you started curtis and I've been waiting since your start of one piece for you to finally know why everyone hates that damn akainu. Shit your reaction had me tearing up as well. Theres a few more sad scenes I'm gonna wait for you to react to and I'll probably cry with you as well. Love live one piece

Anonymous

I genuinely believe that if Garp would have gotten his hands on MagmaMan he would have killed him. Even though everyone else wasn't able to do anything to him, Garp would have fucked him up!

Brother E

You should devote the stream to Ace by taking your Ace POP figure and drilling a hole right in the center of his chest.

A.W

I remember reading the corresponding manga chapter for the first time. Literally the only time I've actually cried over a fictional series.

Anonymous

Is this the first non-flash back death?

Kamui

Ace died with a smile on his face like his father and mother :(

Kamui

I remember seeing the manga in 2010 and I couldn't believe my eyes that this author let a character die. Making the viewers having high hopes and in the end killing him. I was sad and angry at the same time. I couldn't recover from it. I thought maybe we get some magic powers to heal him.. I couldn't sleep that night well. I cried in the bed hoping this not real. I hoped when this episode gets adapted to Anime, I hope they make filler and let Ace live.. Sadly not. R.I.P Portgas D. Ace

Cetacean Needed

Man, I remember when this chapter first dropped in the manga. Pretty much everyone went through the five stages of grief all at once, with a hefty dose of anger for Akainu. He essentially went to the top of everyone's shit list at record speeds. And yeah, there were no dry eyes.

Anonymous

Word have not been invented to express the brutality of way that episode hammers the emotions.

Anonymous

Nah man in this case FUCK AKAINU

Anonymous

Most of the main marine characters have redeemable characteristics. But not Akainu,he is made to be a villain, a complete prick. Everyone wants to see his downfall.

Ali6B

Mr Morj made some comments on how Sengoku knew that Garp was about to tarnish his name/legacy and everything he worked for if he started wailing on Akainu and I like to think that is the main reason he stopped him. Not because Sengoku wanted Akainu alive or thought Garp was going to lose but to stop a friend from doing something he might regret forever

Anonymous

Nothing but manly tears today

Anonymous

What makes Ace still one of the most brutal deaths is the story. He was a minor character early on, no reason to believe we would lose him. Luffy and the world strongest pirate go surely they will save him. They do save him, you get the pure joy on his face as he is with his brother. And then drops the boot. And to top it, they grind in that as painful as it was for Ace to watch people die for him, it made him realize all of those pirates wanted him to be born and considered him important which was all he ever wanted and he was killed before he could thank anyone. For most deaths, like Naruto's parents or Meruem, you knew it was coming. There was no way around Naruto's parents dying since it was backstory and Mereum was just built up as the obstacle they needed to kill. This was built up and the saving grace, this big amazing accomplishment and joyous reunion of brothers and just quickly snuffed. So well done.

Anonymous

am i the only one who never gave a shit about ace? i mean luffy knew that ace was in trouble since thriller bark and even he didn't give a shit until the plot needed him to give a shit, until marineford ace wasn't in the story for more than a hand full of chapters, then marineford gives me that massive info dump and suddenly i'm supposed to care? i seriously struggle to understand why people ever got emotionally attached to him.

Anonymous

Luffy was able to save Robin from her past but unfortunately he could not save Ace

Anonymous

yes it is too my knowledge so far there are only 2 non flashback deaths in one piece

Johnny Kiehn

It was mentioned as well way back in Loguetown that all the members of the Will of D seem to die smiling... hmmmm...

Anonymous

SURPRISE, MOTHER FUCKER!!!

Anonymous

During this episode you shouldn't have felt you had to apologise for lack of any verbal reaction anyone watching with any shred of empathy could pick up on your feelings with your facial expressions and body language this episode is hard for any One Piece fan to watch i was dreading and also looking forward to your reaction to this.
