I love how the original FMA spends longer on each scene than Brotherhood, it hooks me into the story more than brotherhood and really sets the mood.

This version is darker and more nihilistic than brotherhood or the manga. Because of that, I enjoy it a bit more as I tend to like darker stories.

I love this episode. It is just so well done as an introduction to the world and how it works. Some of its strengths are a bit lost on people that have seen the show before, but it really shows off all the elements. We start with the core of horror that is their situation, build some humor on top and then we show off the characters. They also do a lot to show the differences between ed and al.

I would entirely agree with that for a lot of the series, but i think Brotherhood has a better ending.
