A cool part about knowing the Nen categories is that oftentimes you can now reasonably guess what category an ability uses. The guy Kurapika threatened has a great ability for this. Your guess was between Emitter and Manipulator, which in this case both would be correct. He was manipulating puppets he had put Nen into, which would use both categories. The guy could easily be either an Emitter or Manipulator too, since those categories are next to one another on the hexagon. In this case, whichever category he is doesn't matter much, just that if he were a manipulator, his control would be better, whereas an emitter would have slightly worse control, but stronger puppets.

I love this show so much <3

10:06 I'm very impressed that they subtitled Basho's line (which is once again a 5-7-5 haiku) as an actual 5-7-5 haiku in English. I'm assuming all that effort went completely unnoticed by 99.9% of the viewing audience, so let's give credit where it's due. "No other choice, then. -- shou ga nee I will have to settle this -- ore ga ketsuron Matter on my own -- dashite yaru" Same idea for 10:51, and so on.

Wanted to put this out there if you haven't heard of this show but you should totally check out The Bear. It seems like it would be right up your alley, and it's a very very good live action show that would be a good mixup from all this animation

I think you were right about Sideburns when you called out emitter. He might be a manipulator, but it looks like he's using an emitter technique to create the black puppets. A manipulator technique to control them. Since they're so weak individually, but he can control so many so well at once, it makes sense that he is a manipulator but his ability uses both manipulator and emitter techniques to work. No clue if that's true or if they ever say though lol

And one more thing this episode, Killua's drip????? I love him

macrowave

What'd you think?? It sucked me in so quick! The dialogue is just unmatched imo

Manny

You said the first dude was either an emitter or manipulator. It was confirmed he was a manipulator but from Wing’s explanation “the closer a class is to your own, the easier it will be for you to learn it”. So he’s a manipulator but I think there has to be some kind of emitter quality there. It’s never said but who knows? It’s interesting combinations that make some abilities very unique.

Oak

Technically he was not confirmed to be a manipulator. Kurapika assumes as much, be we never get confirmation outside of Kurapika's assumption.

Bojack horesman would be a great show

Piggybacking off of this, there are nen types that are commonly used for basic nen abilities of many types. For example, ANY ranged use of nen requires some form of emission. Really shows how you can mix and match.

Chris Sharpe

I do think it makes sense for the client to be so cautious (even if it is frustrating). Nen users are rare, powerful, and in extremely high demand. This may seem like a reason as to why he shouldn’t be picky if it weren’t for the fact he has 3 full time nen users around the clock. This means he is filthy rich and probably a billionaire with a lot of pull. Letting a dangerous person with superhuman abilities guard your back is risky, and they would probably only skip the tests with seasoned mercenaries. The puppets were not a massive threat and they were screened for being nen users first.

Chris Sharpe

Also funny how Killua is one of the few anime characters with a revolving wardrobe. Also Kurapika’s abilities may be somewhat explained by the fact that Gon’s broken limb gave him a head start, plus his conviction.

Manny

Oh you got a point! I took his silence as confirmation but keeping it a secret would be a smart thing to do.

In regards to Leorio, it doesn't show it really in the anime but in the manga, there is a few scenes showing that Leorio actually has the greatest base strength out of any of them at least in the beginning but as you can see lacks in many other aspects.

Arakis

The closer the show gets to One Piece's fruit powers with ridiculous things like the haiku power, the less I enjoy it...

Chris Sharpe

As an professional slut for One Piece, no. It is completely different and is a far better and more intriguing power system (not that there’s anything wrong with devil fruits). While there are a lot of differences, cursed energy from JJK is heavily based on Nen, with the main difference being the fact that you actually craft your techniques rather than being born with them (and a couple others).

Arakis

It doesn't really matter what it resembles more. The point is that the show started losing me at the beyblade guy. I can stomach using spirit power to become stronger, or even manipulate/control others, or even making a double of yourself... but elementary schoolyard type like "whatever I write in haikus happens" or character designs like "I'm spinning like a top" are, to me, something for a much younger audience (around 16 at most).

Chris Sharpe

It seems goofy, but gets far more interesting. I can say straight up that there are very few powers like that in the future, at least not ones from prominent characters and don’t overstay their welcome. There will be a lot more mechanics introduced that make it even more interesting with more fascinating fights and world building. If you are the type of person who hates complex power systems (not the same as convoluted), then yes, it may be a problem, but you seem to be the opposite. The fight choreography, and cerebral nature of the fights especially, in the series are second to none.

Oak

To clarify, this was shown during the Zoldyck family arc, and Leorio was shown to be at least at the time, physically stronger than Gon or Kurapika. Killua was able to open 3 of the testing gates, so he'd still have been physically the strongest at the time.

JUJ

That is why I say base strength as killuas strength was acquired from his years of training not from birth. There Is additional scenes to support this as well in the manga but I don't want to spoil anything so I left it at that.

Oak

I've always liked the haiku power. Not only do you have to be able to write the exact thing you want to happen in a haiku, but if it's a "weak" haiku its effect will be weaker. I'm not sure what determines the strength of a haiku, but in the case of Basho's ability I'd imagine it's a subconscious thing. Like if Basho wrote a haiku and internally there's a part of him that's like, "this one's kinda shit" then it probably would be less effective. Basho’s power is a great example of a Nen concept I can’t talk about just yet, but it becomes more of an interesting ability when it gets introduced. And the beyblade power is definitely one of the least interesting abilities, it more so just serves as an intro to stuff you can do with Nen, kinda like Kastro and the rest of Heaven's Arena.

Farther into the arc, as usual I agree with the training / hiring process haha
