gon reminds me so much of tanjiro (or vice versa lol) keen smell, pure heart, random side-quests helping everyone and their mom.... happy pill for main cast

Leorio passed despite not being able to distinguish the doppelganger, so it's still possible. :)

"Gon you are danger to yourself and everyone around you." CUT THE CAMERAS

I'm loving the title card reading for this show. Glad I stayed up to see this :) Excited for more!

I believe Tanjiro's character was largely inspired by Gon. But unlike Tanjiro, Gon is an extremely complex character whose journey is very unique compared with other shounen protagonists.

It’s likely that Kurapika was originally meant to have an ambiguous gender, as mangaka can get away with that by using ambiguous pronouns in Japanese language. The problem is when there needs to be translation overseas, the creator usually needs to pick a gender due to most other languages using gendered pronouns. This is honestly not an uncommon occurrence, and a notable exception to this is Hange Zoe, whom Isayama explicitly demanded that despite the language difficulties, they keep their/her gender ambiguous.

I really love Gon so far, he’s such a cutie. I’m really not looking foreword to whatever he’s going to be put through. This whole exam before the exam thing is crazy and I really like it lol. So far we’ve been getting some nice insight into Kurapika and Leorio. Ngl I was worried that Kurapika would be a Sasuke-esque angst machine, but he seems to be a good team player so far. Also we still haven’t met the white haired guy yet, so I’m assuming he’s going to come in on the actual, for-real exam. Maybe he’ll be Gon’s main rival? Idk either way this is fun so far.

Also, Gon has general superhuman senses and superhuman physical abilities. It may seem like it’s cheap and overpowered but trust me, the competition is strong enough in the series for that to just be a necessary start. The Hunter Exam is not really to train people, rather it is a test for already strong people to get the benefits of being a hunter, as hunters get many resources, so they can’t just give it to any shmuck who strolls up.

Isayama explicitly made it to where Hange’s gender was never stated and no pronouns were ever used (there was one case that was a mistake on the translator’s part), but he said you could either interpret her as a woman, or non-binary. I just call Hange she because Isayama said it was fine and I’m a bit too lazy to change what I have already been calling her, but I don’t see Hange any particular way. You can call Hange she, just don’t discount what others want to call her or what Isayama said.

I'm just sitting here waiting for the best character in the show to show up. aka white haired kid you haven't met yet.

Based only on first impressions, one thing I like about this show already is that it's very clear about having a playful tone in regard to the universe building, and so extremes are part of the charm. In that sense, Gon's ability to sense everything doesn't matter, it's just part of this eccentric universe. It might not work, for counter example, if it was set in heavy realism.

What’s interesting is that Sasuke was actually based off of Kurapika since the original manga came out before Naruto and the Kishimoto (Naruto mangaka) has said how much the series influenced him, along with many later surface level similarities.

Ruma Risto

@Chris Sharpe Both Kurapika and Killua. I think Kishimoto even admitted that over a decade ago.

Also, something I want to mention, episodes 13 and 26 are recap episodes, and not even the somewhat natural, kinda fine filler type of recap, no. Just hamfisted recap so I’d advise skipping it.

the last few seconds (from the timestamp 21:18) of episode 13 are cannon, you can watch that in your own time

As for Kurapika's gender, it's indeed a bit vague. He refers to himself as "watashi," which is oddly formal / feminine for a guy, but Kurapika also speaks in unusually academic language all the time, so that's not totally out of character. The quiz-master woman calls him 'bouya', which does normally refer to boys, but it's not exclusively so.
