Never thought I’d live to see the day 🤝

Jabin (Aelic)

The day has finally arrived, after all these years :')

Chris Sharpe

Honestly, it’s great to see HxH here, as it is basically a founding father for so many other series, being the inspiration for many, many mangaka. Mangaka of series like Naruto and Jujutsu Kaisen have unabashedly said that HxH was their biggest influence and it shows in their work. If you look around the world of battle shonen, you can see tiny little influences from HxH everywhere. Even Levi in AOT had his design based off of a particular character from HxH. If it weren’t for the author’s debilitating health problems hindering his releases, HxH would have competed with some of the greatest names in anime history in the late 90’s and early 2000’s (as the original series came out in 1997). But either way, it is great that it got the red carpet treatment with it’s adaptation, even if it was over a decade later. Edit: Random fun fact. Togashi, the mangaka of HxH is married to the mangaka of Sailor Moon, Nueko Takeuchi.

It is time for me to give this show another chance.

Warmlights

Wow. 🙊 I think is the first long-running shonen series I have not seen prior to your reaction. I guess this is the sign and my time to finally get around to watching HxH, haha. Excited to watch along with you for my first time too. Let’s go!!

Rice

I must admit, despite me campaigning hard for Haikyuu over HxH in all of the past polls it’s pretty great to see it finally pop up on here. It’s a great show and I think you’re gonna get a lot out of it. Especially towards the end, lots of great stuff to look forward to here.

Jasmine Tea Enjoyer

This pilot episode is excellent. I also was quite moved by the Gon leaving scene with Mito-san, the music and the animation made me tear up a little when I first watched it. Can't deny the fantastic production quality of this show.

Rice

Oh my god I completely forgot. First episode predictions: I have either Kurapika or Killua as Goodwins favorites by the end of the series. Kurapika is blonde so he’s got the statistical advantage here, but I think Killua’s white hair is blonde adjacent enough to maybe edge it out.

Hannan

i haven’t watched hxh so i shall be watching along with you 🫡

Mima

best day of my life. (ps. kurapika is a man LOL)

Jon

Oh man, here we go. Time to relive this awesome show alongside ya. Favorite part about this show is how different it feels arc-to-arc. Looking forward to it!

My favorite anime let's gooo

Chris Sharpe

I think he will really like Ging and Leorio, as I feel they are right up his alley in regards to character.

NitrousOxide19

The nostalgia just from this first episode. HxH was probably the first anime I binged in the first covid lockdown and it resonated so heavily with me. No spoilers but certain arcs like the current JJK one and the MHA season 6 war / any amazing Shonen arc always get compared to a certain one in this show bc of how much of a game changer it was for Shonen. There’s so much to look forward to in these 150ish episodes so hope ur excited!!

Chris Sharpe

“There’s a pain beneath the jolliness” That should be the show’s motto. You were also inquiring about the villains. HxH has the greatest rouges gallery of any show I’ve seen and many others think the same.

This show is an amazing ride each arc is almost a different kind of anime

Ruma Risto

I remember dropping HxH multiple times after the first or second episode because of how childish and dated it felt but once I finally gave it a proper chance, I couldn't stop watching. This is one of my absolute favorite action shounen series and I would argue it's also one of the very best. Glad you're finally watching this. Kurapika is a guy btw. I made the same mistake in the beginning :D

Mima

ur not to blame he’s just too beautiful

Sam B

Jealous its your first watch haha, enjoy!!!

Oh my god, this is crazy. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on this. The main character Gon is an interesting one, and someone who I can't exactly pin down in terms of what I think/understand about him. He's a unique MC; one pretty different from the others we've seen, so I'm excited to see him from your perspective.

Aidan Pullen

I have tried to complete this series multiple times but end up getting distracted in the final long arc. This is the perfect chance for me to get through the show in its entirety! I can't wait to hear your insights about the characters in this show because they're so great.

So, to the surprise of probably no one, I'm going to talk about the language for a bit: the "X" thing. Togashi (the author) wanted to make a whole language for Gon's world, and he threw around a couple ideas, but eventually he got bored with it, so he just went with a different writing system. In his invented writing system, he thought that the ✖ symbol would be used like a space in English to separate words. So It's "Hunter✖Hunter" because, in that language, the ✖ is the space between words. Obviously, Spy x Family and so on were inspired by that idea. A very large amount of Hunter x Hunter is basically "Togashi thought this would be cool at the time," haha. Almost every episode title is a very corny pun. Case in point: "Departure & Friends" Tabidachi & Nakamatachi ........ get it? ....dachi? tachi? Ey? You just have to basically say every episode title as if it were a dad joke. 2:18 "But why do they call it whale island?" So, I know this is a joke, but actually, there's a punny reason. Whale is "kujira," and "lottery / luck of the draw" is "kuji." So, it's meant to be a play on starting out a journey by essentially random "rolling for initiative." Another example: Gon's full name is "Gon Freecss," which is what Togashi ended up on after playing around with the word "Corn Flakes."

Yaaayyy new series! I’ve never seen this before, but I know the barest bones of the plot through fandom osmosis/my friends talking about it. I’m actually really glad that I’m going to watch this along with you since it gives me an excuse to have something to watch and keep me grounded through the semester. This is going to be so much fun!

agoodwintv

You know, I was staring at that last name for a while trying to figure out why or where it came from

After losing as many polls as Attack on Titan has had final seasons, we're finally here! Something to be aware of, for the first 40 or so episodes HxH was aired earlier in the day, and as a result needed to have some of its violence censored. So if you notice a lack of blood where you think there should be blood, that would be why. As people have pointed out, HxH has inspired a LOT of stuff. Tanjiro's sniffing ability was shown being used by Gon on the boat, and lots of other stuff that I can't talk about just yet. I'm planning on rereading the manga along with your uploads, and there are a few added details here and there that were only mentioned in the manga. If it's ever relevant, I'll share some details from the corresponding chapters. I expect this to be when the power system gets introduced, as it's pretty famous for being very well thought out, but also a bit complicated. First example being that there was actually a lot of important stuff cut from this episode. They had it in the 1999 version but decided to cut it here for whatever reason. It's remedied by having parts of it shown way later, but it was still a weird decision to cut it. They also change a few things when it is brought up again. If you want to, you could read the first chapter of the manga, (which actually ends before Gon even leaves) or watch the first episode of the 1999 version on your own time. Thankfully, this is pretty much the only time something like this happens. Hopefully I covered everything I meant to cover here. I shouldn't have this much to say for a while at least, so for now I am here for the ride, and can't wait for more!

I’m so excited you’re starting this!! I was kinda hoping you’d watch the dub though. It’s super good and the narrator is a fan favorite.

macrowave

I think I heard that they cut it because Madhouse didn't know if they would get to animate the relevant arc or not when they were first starting. And I think it's a good decision, because the way that chapter is written is not even close to the same tone that this anime clearly wanted to start out with if I'm remembering correctly

macrowave

It makes the flashback feel a little out of place later on, but all the relevant info is conveyed when it's actually relevant too instead of four arcs ahead of time lol, but I also agree that there's a lot more to that bit of story that the 2011 anime really could've kept in. I like the changes to the hunter exam though. There's so much extra stuff in phase 1 and 2 that I'm glad Madhouse just sped through and skipped

macrowave

I remember watching that arc while it was airing and it was pretty tough to keep coming back for only a single episode every week. Once it all came out though I binged it and goddamn it's amazing that way

Vincent

Oh lets go! Just re-subbed for this after a year or so, glad to be back on some shows I know and love.

Tope

Wow, your ability to notice the subtleties of characters is immaculate. Will really come in handy in this show, in particular.

Oak

I agree, cutting some of the redundant exam stuff was nice.

Chris Sharpe

Most authors: I need a name that is powerful and recognizable that emphasizes the strongest traits of the character. Togashi: Corn Flakes :)

Ryan

I mean, Chris, you mentioned legacy, but I think the influence of Dragonball can probably be seen there. ;) Gohan, Vegeta(ble), Frieza (freezer), Salt, Garlic...

Tope

I also struggled in the beginning of that arc. But when it gets going?! Holy hell.

Sam B

I'm not going to be able to look at Gorn Frakes the same way...

Emman Reed

This one has me so hyped! I was SO happy when I saw this when logging on after a long hard day. I loved your, once again, intriguing insight on this first episode. Can't wait for more of this gem. Thank you :)

kingkoopa98

Super hyped that you're reacting to this show because I just happened to start it a few weeks ago and it's great so far.

I'm gona cry !! I can't believe this 😭❤️❤️

Mortis

I’ve been of the opinion for a long time that everyone has free will and everything is destined. And I think you kinda said something similar to what brought me to that opinion.

Marina B

OMG I’m just now noticing this BUT IM SO EXCITED!!!!! Alex and hxh?!?? Say less
