Bighead

I don't know why, but I personally felt like Souya looked very fragile and child-like in this episode, almost vulnerable more so than ethereal like he did in the previous episodes. And the second half of them just navigating through the rainy evening, like you said, I don't know how to put it in words, but it was so beautiful, just two kindred souls and an invisible connection. The silence and slowness of this episode really helped set the "I don't know how/what to feel" haze in the viewers. Souya is such an interesting and yet (dare I say) almost tragic character. I feel like the pedestal he's put on really isolates him from others and him being unable to hear feels like a metaphor for this isolation. Like they say, it's lonely at the top.

when Rei was focused on match records last episode and couldn't even hear Hayashida, he seemed to be in a similar sort of daze that we see Souya in at all times now. While in reality he's probably just deaf, the show describing it as 'sound doesn't exist for him' really does push the parallel between him and Rei and the idea that he's like a 'bad ending' version of Rei, as if shogi is his entire world to the extent that he's constantly concentrating on it just as Rei briefly was last episode.
