Lol I didn't think you'd be that skeptical of the chairman. I get it though, we don't get to see a lot of him, but I guess it's just his personality where he (jokingly) takes advantage of the popular players to better advertise and make revenue to in turn fund the shogi community. He's a businessman at the end of the day. But he's probably the most close to Souya as a guardian figure because he feels responsible (and does care to a certain extent) for his players and Souya probably needs him the most. Also can attest to the 'prick your egg before boiling it' advice. It gives you a smoothly rounded end as opposed to a somewhat flattened end, and also keeps the shell from cracking as Akari mentioned. I think it's something to do with the air allowed to circulate through the egg. The egg piercing tool is quite handy. Also I think the side tangent with the kawamoto family was like a transition from the almost grey world of isolation Souya lives in to the caring, loving and colorful world that awaits Rei. The Kawanoto family, Shimada and Nikaidou are what are keeping Rei from slipping into that isolation. Ohh also can't forget the great Hayashida sensei. But really, as you deduced from this episode, the scene was a PSA for people to enjoy making the perfect boiled eggs. If anything you should try it!!

The chairman is ABSOLUTELY business-minded but it clearly comes from a deep passion for shogi (and I'm sure a deep appreciation and respect for Souya). I think his feelings towards Souya as an amazing figurehead for advertisers and his actual appreciation of him as a player isn't mutually exclusive, but Souya's vulnerability from his deafness makes the chairman's relationship with him quite unusual as a result. I also want to defend Nikaidou's opponent because GOD do i understand the feeling of someone just completely outplaying you and feeling a very specific mix of both frustration at having lost and admiration for your opponent at having done something incredible (not to mention, in this case, it was an upset victory for Nikaidou). All I really felt he was doing was acknowledging Nikaidou as well as hyping him up (by very clearly showing his frustration at how great his move was), which I think is warranted considering how excited we see Nikaidou himself was about the move as well.
