It's legal, but it often is a front for the illegal, or leads there on a case-by-case basis. I know the most about "hostesses" in Korea. Typically it's one of two things: 1) You go to a normal private room karaoke (noraebang) and ask the owner to call some "helpers." A few girls come in and you choose who you want to hang out with, and you pay them by the hour + tip. I don't really know what the rules are here, but I wouldn't be surprised if touching is standard. And then what happens next depends on the people in the room, and I suppose what you asked for when you spoke to the owner. 2) You go to a "room salon," which is similar to above but the girls work in-house, and it's pretty much guaranteed that it's okay to get physical up to a point (touching above the waist). There are obviously places where it goes far beyond that into illegal territory, but it all depends on the place, the owner, the workers, the customers, etc. I've never been so I get different stories depending on who I talk to. On paper, nothing sexual happens. In practice however...

A really long time ago when I first came to Korea, a Korean friend of mine and I were looking for a bar in a relatively quiet neighborhood. We checked out this random place we saw called Fox Bar. We realized it was a talking bar, where the drinks are super expensive and an attractive girl will come sit and drink with you, and you buy her drinks as well. We didn't stick around because the girls who came to serve us seemed weirded out that a foreigner was there, and the whole vibe was awkward. That's the last exposure I ever had to that kind of place, and I've never heard them mentioned. But I guess those exist as well here.

Oh... AND. This is bizarre but, I have been to a MALE room salon, meaning a place with hosts. I went with 2 girls. Basically a lineup comes in and you assess them, and then they leave, then you tell the manager who you want to drink with. By booking a room you get a liquor set, then the guys come in and basically treat you like they love you. In my case I had to choose a guy and he was pretty cool (we kept in touch for a bit after that). I observed that the guys do try to escalate physically with the female clients. Though I'm not sure if that was because that's standard for the job or if they really liked the 2 girls I was with.

@A Goodwin TV Interesting. I thought of the idea of male hosts, but it’s cool to actually get details about it.

I watched this on New Years. Complete coincidence, wanted to watch some March and this was the first one.

The Kawamoto siblings give me so much serotonin. It’s weird thinking of the age difference of the siblings with, like, ten years between each one. Akari is old enough to be Momo’s mother (and Momo probably sees her that way). But yeah, it was interesting learning about the hostess stuff. Is it illegal? I’m don’t 100% understand it, so some extra info would be very much appreciated.
