In Haikyuu 1x16, Winners and Losers, Daichi's underrated middle school philosophy bears fruit in the first match of the elimination tournament across three teams, years later. Despite the outcome, everyone is better for it.

The match point montage in this episode might be a top 10 scene for me. One of my favorite songs on the soundtrack, the transitions between the games, the fact it's focused on Tokonami and the girls' team to the point where, however briefly, you want Karasuno to lose the point. Great stuff.

One of my favorite episodes, and I think I've missed a lot of the discussion of getting to the top from shows I haven't seen yet, so a lot of the discussion was a first for me. Speaking of which, what is a biscuit nap? It's a little funny to me that Goodwin figured out how to say Date Tech but hasn't quite figured out "Karasuno," haha. (This episode it was mostly "kurasano," which almost works? Haha. If you ignore the intonation, it means "the one from the darkness") 20:30 I think there's an important thing to note about the people coming out to support the teams. It's likely that most of the people cheering for Date Tech in the dark green jackets are actually members of the volleyball team itself. (The people in white are probably family / friends, but the cheerleaders are almost certainly volleyball team members) You can only have a maximum of 14 players on the court, but at bigger schools, sports clubs can have many more members than that, so just getting a jersey is a big deal. If you don't get a jersey, it's your role to be the cheerleaders, something Date Tech guy leans into, but many others are a little bitter about, since it means they got cut from the starting roster. 10:20 I'm not sure if this came through in the subtitles or not, but I think it's an important detail: Ikejiri says that one reason why his team can end the match with the respect of the rest of the stadium is because Karasuno took them seriously as worthy opponents. It's gratitude to the people who crushed you for having the respect to do so with everything they got. I really like that. Last language nerd comment: obviously, Date Tech comes from the old samurai lord Date Masamune, who was from Sendai and built the castle there that Seijoh's named after. He was known as an iron defender, as well, but I think that's the end of the connection, since otherwise Date's main characteristics are the moon shape on the helmet and the eye patch (he was called the "one-eyed dragon of the East" in his time). All of the Date Tech players are named after hot springs in Miyagi. The "pointy guy" / no-eyebrows, is named "Aone" (pronounced like "oww + nay"), and Aone Onsen is a really cool place. They have a "snow lighting" festival every year that's very similar to the Kamakura festival where I used to live in Akita: https://onsennews.com/snow_event_aoneonsen_yukiakari/

It's really well done. The editing so that we know what's happening even when we can't see it. This episode has a bunch of really great soundtrack songs. All three of these ones come up again in new, evolved versions in later seasons, too: - "Loser" / Haisha https://youtu.be/SHqjFfqBFgI - "Breakthrough" / Toppakou https://youtu.be/Xvs0UMsiXwM - "Longing" / Akogare (starting from about 1:00), https://youtu.be/b4LNVyXxmjw

One of my favorite episodes of the show is this episode. It captures the feeling of other players and that everything isn't always in your favor in sports. There is always a winner and a loser. The montage of showing all the teams around Japan who lost and had their seasons ended broke my heart as a viewer and I tear up everytime. I play a fighting video game competitively and while I'm okay and get some decent local results the spirit of competitiveness hits me hard and I relate so much to losing and not being able to play anymore. Love this show so much.

Regarding your comeback in the NFL, you were talking about the Colts and the Vikings right? I'm from Minnesota so I know lol

Ryan

I thought Goodwin was from NY so he was talking about the Jets vs the Browns early in the season, but you're probably right.

I believe the Colts v Vikings game was the biggest comeback in NFL history... I by pure chance caught the 4th quarter of the game because I almost never watch American Football. Was suprised to hear Goodwin reference it lol, dude must be keeping up with NFL while living in Korea.

I feel like the part where ikejiri talks about how everyone thought that they were weak but karasuno was taking them seriously was relatable for me. It reminded me of this one time where I was in a game and the other team was much better than us. I remember right after one of the other girls scored a basket, she rolled her eyes and said that this game was boring and how my team wasn't that good. The other team seemed to not be trying very hard against us at all. Partly because of skill and partly because they looked down on us it seemed. But in the 2nd half we ended up closing the large gap in points. We didn't win but the game ended up being close. I could see toward the end of the game, the girls trying a little harder as we started scoring more points. I feel like after experiencing that, you start to really appreciate when other teams don't hold back and play their best, no matter the difference of skill between the 2 teams. It feels nice that, even if the gap is large, the other team keeps playing hard instead of starting to relax and think they're "safe" and there's no way we can catch up. It's kind of like, having respect for the other team's efforts I guess? To not hold back on them

Just out of curiosity, are you planning on doing the SxF finale and getting back around to Mob this weekend or more towards next?

agoodwintv

The biscuit nap was in reference to the fact that he took a biscuit or something from a girl and then promptly nodded off in the previous episode. I realized my name mistake afterwards. I think I'm good now lol

agoodwintv

I watch game highlights if I hear there was a good game or if it's critical to the playoffs

agoodwintv

The next two days are going to be SxF and then hopefully I can resume Mob at the end of next week!

I think that variability in naming is a feature of this channel, not a bug, haha. And to be fair, there are a lot of names. Jiggomania alone is tough.
