"Great rivalries don't have to be built on hatred. They're built on respect, on a respect for excellence." - Mike Krzyzewski

The Kenma-Hinata relationship is the equivalent to an extrovert adopting an introvert. Kenma is so blah about volleyball and Hinata wants him to realize the range of emotions playing a sport competitively can make you feel. Although, I feel like you wouldn't be participating in something that you didn't have at least some affinity for!

Nice quote. Even hatred and fear imply at least some respect. A few of my closest friends are people I initially clashed with, probably because they had something I coveted and vice versa. That's partly what makes an eventual allegiance so powerful. It's a growing experience for both

15:38 --> Yes, it is a real thing that coaches talk to the opposing teams after the match in Japanese school sports. It's almost never a long, emotional speech about life and finding purpose, though, haha. Usually, it's just "Good game" + maybe one sentence. It's a formality, but in practice matches, they'll say more. 0:10 Noya's line "nice save, Daichi" is a bit more colorful in Japanese. It's nice "shiri-nugui" (an ass-wiping, as in covering someone's ass), haha. It'll come up again. 2:45 Coach Nekomata says that Karasuno isn't just like any regular "raibaru" (rival), but rather they're like the original word for rival in Japanese: 好敵手, kou-teki-shu, or "favorite/likeable-enemy-athlete/hand." Basically a frenemy? haha. It's what Athena was saying. Rivals are opponents with mutual admiration. Just like before "vanguard / rear guard" = front row vs back row. At 6:02, you seemed to get right away what Kuroo was doing, so all the better, but what they call a "personal time difference attack" is, in normal English, just called a "pump fake." Same as in basketball. Like they said, it's not that popular anymore because it's kinda high risk with only moderate reward, but it's possible.

Haikyuu is a pretty long series, there are currently 4 seasons out. The manga is finished but the anime is still around 100 chapters behind so there will be at least one additional season. As a manga reader, I personally enjoyed the latter parts (roughly the second half) of the story way more than the first seasons. Yes, more characters with difficult-to-remember names are constantly introduced, but every single one is relevant in their own way. The Karasuno team's journey towards the brilliant ending is very satisfying, and I can't wait to see it animated.

I feel like the beginning of season 1 did the less glamorous work of setup for people who don’t know about volleyball. It keeps picking up momentum after this.

I love the idea of coaches addressing the other team. Too bad it doesn't happen at this level of critique though

yeah well the first 3 seasons all came out one after the other and were all insanely popular. also they were animated by the same people, season 4 on the other hand which came out fairly recently has worse animation but the story remains strong, and now they are wrapping things up with a movie or two i heard... lets hope they turn out well.

i love the hinata x kenma relationship so much!! they are so different but i think it's one of those friendships where they bring out each others best qualities 🥹
