In Attack on Titan 4x20 Memories of the Future...

All I ever wanted to do was play baseball

I just wanted to be your son, I swear

All I ever wanted to do was play with grandma

I never wanted to rat you out, I swear

You tell me why you abandoned me

For all those dancing sessions

If I lose it all, I'll play baseball

I will never miss a throw.

If I lose it all, lose it all, lose it all

If I lose it all, with my ball

Live to throw another day

I just want a hug, I'm just here to...

Rumbling, Rumbling,

I'm crying tears for daddy

Rumbling, Rumbling

Wait…so Eren was actually the writer of AOT the entire time? Isayama fooled us all.

Aaron Ong

Here’s a little copy paste thing that explains this episode a bit. It’s nice So in order to avoid any confusion regarding the time travel mechanics, I will break down what type of Time travel we're dealing with here. AOT operates by a particular type of time travel where it's almost impossible to change the past even if you somehow go back in time. And any change that you tried to cause was always meant to happen in the overall timeline. Here time is a fixed circle, not a stream. We may see Eren meddle in the past but that was always meant to happen. This calls into the question of the existence of free will in the world of Attack of Titan. The Attack Titan's ability is to receive the memories of its future inheritors. This was hinted when Kruger mentioned Mikasa and Armin towards the end of S3. Keep in mind, they can only view these memories but can't interact with them. So how was Eren able to meddle in the past? Well, he had 3 perfect conditions: 1. He had the ability of the Attack Titan 2. The ability of the Founding Titan 3. He was also in contact with someone with royal blood AKA Zeke. After Zeke tapped Eren's head, they were able to view Grisha's past memories with Eren using the power of the coordinate. They were freely able to view the past as if it were through a one way mirror. Now if Eren had any other Titan other than the Attack Titan, he would only be able to look. But since Attack Titan can see forward in time, Grisha can use this to see Eren's recollection of the same event that he's currently experiencing in real time. So this mean that whenever Grisha can see or hear Eren, he's actually recieving a brief future memory from Eren's POV where he can see out of his eyes and hear his words. That means he is seeing himself from a 3rd perspective. Then if he responds, his response is simply part of the memory that Eren/Zeke are viewing, allowing for a two way communication through time. Also Note that everytime, Grisha sees Zeke, Eren is always standing behind his dad. So whenever Grisha sees Zeke, it is from actually due to the memories from Eren's POV I haven’t seen the video yet so maybe you already got this, but if anyone else is confused, it’s here, and it really helped me out when I first saw it!

benj

Love the pfp levi gif. KENNNNNYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nick

Love the fact that this pretty much reveals to us that Eren has never been free since he's essentially a slave to fate/timeline shenanigans. His future self put all of this in place against his past self's knowledge. Talk about a mind explosion, no wonder he freaked out when he kissed Historia's hand. The attack titan by nature always has to rebel against the founding titan's vow of no war as well

benj

Also wanna give a special shoutout to the OST this episode...the soundtrack and timing of the musical numbers in this episode adds SO much to all the scenes. Seriously some of the best use of music I've seen in anime. Grisha's Voice Actor as well is a complete GOD. His breakdown after being basically forced to murder all those children by Eren was unreal to listen to, actually some of the best voice acting I have ever heard.

Nick

Just putting myself in Eren's shoes, you beat your enemy in a massive battle in your hometown where everything started, find out humanity is alive and your people are hated by the world, kiss some lady's hand and see yourself manipulating your own dad in the future but somehow the past at the same time. Bro is the most caged bird possible

joe martin

funny how zeke thought eren's disgust when grisha confronted the king of the walls was related to grisha killing the kids and family, but eren's actual disgust was about grisha hesitating to do so. pretty dark stuff

Nick

Still important to note Grisha wasn't forced by Eren to do that. He was undergoing major mind fuckery by Eren though, I mean hearing and seeing your own future son through his future memories telling you to finish what you started. That's intense

VesperQuartz15

I was dying to see this chapter animated. It blow my expectations. It was even better than the manga.

VesperQuartz15

I recommend you to rewatch season 1 episode 1 again. At least the first half of it lol

Nick

I think Eren was disgusted by Grisha killing them when he first saw it in season 3. He was remorseful about it when he was held captive by Reiss, but yeah he definitely sees it as a means to an end now

Brimmy

Eren Kruger to Grisha: save Armin and Mikasa Grisha: who? Eren Kruger:....I don't know...whose memories are those? K WELL NOW IT MAKES SENSE god its like trying to figure out kingdom hearts or something i watched this last night on the sos bros yt and it being edited and blurred so u can't really see much of anything didn't really help me to understand what was going on but this...wow...I also just read Aaron's comment holy shit this anime is amazing

Khalid

nromal people this episode : Zeke and Grisha moment is emotional and sad Goodwin : hmmm I hope Zeke death is by Levi instead of Eren killing him

Keegan Brakhage

I wonder if this episode and the revelation that eren can see the future sort of symbolizes that eren is not free but a slave to himself in some sort of way. Also I like how in that moment at the end, Zeke calls Grisha "father" for the first time since he was a kid I think. Before he just called him "Grisha", "that vile father" or just "that father." He still somewhat recognized him as a father but kinda worded it to separate him from Grisha if that makes any sense

Kotryna

Turns out Grisha did not move on or live well at all! Zeke finally knows who his father really is, and it looks like that broke him. I just wonder how this knowledge would've affected Zeke's whole ideology if he'd known earlier. So absolutely, YET ANOTHER uno reverse card: Zeke gets un-brainwashed. With the selective future memory sending thing, maybe it's nice of Eren to stand in a way that shows Zeke to Grisha? Like we see that Grisha doesn't know how Carla dies, and Eren definitely doesn't show him on purpose, because obviously you don't want to know your first wife devoured your second. It seems like Eren is almost directly communicating with King Fritz here. Because once Freida's eyes go purple, it's no longer her. This episode made me terrified of Eren ngl, especially Grisha telling Zeke to stop him. Just how much has he masterminded??? Remember when Rod Reiss titan was released and they were going over the story of how Grisha killed the family? And Armin was like well the Grisha Jaeger I know wouldn't do something like that without reason! Well turns out the reason was Eren. Also there was one time Historia said well you weren't the one who killed my family :) But I guess the one point of redemption in my heart this episode was Eren pausing on that one moment with Mikasa. The way her voice echoes. And of course the Grisha/Zeke reconciliation even though it made me incredibly sad. But yeah Levi should be the one to kill Zeke, it's only fair. This episode was A LOT. I really do need that week to process it.

Another great parallel. The founding titan is a slave to the past, or the first king of the walls. The attack titan is a slave to the future, or Eren.

Anonymous

It’s puts a lot into perspective about the attack titan. From its first description we are told it always pushes forward seeking freedom. This made us think it was a great match for Eren, but it was actually the other way around. The inheritors of the attack titan are tools of erens will and presumably their main purpose is to get the attack titan into Erens hands.

Geneva The Weeba

"Memories of the future!....Memories of the future???" Us too, Goodwin, us too

John Carrizales

What Really Surprised me this episode is how Marley and King Reiss Family have this exact same idology about the Eldian People. So its actually makes sense why Marley thinks this way. However I feel safe to say Kruger was right "A King Who Can't Protect His own people is no king" I litertally felt Eren's Anger Hearing The King Spew that Bullshit about letting his peole not become weapons and letting them die out to save the world. First off the King's whole argument falls arpart when you just think about the Nature of humanity Take away the titans from the world; Humanity will go on to use other methods to kill each other we have already seen advacement in techonology at the Beggining of Season 4 were weapons are being developed to take down titans and that is just the tip. Imagine Atomic Bombs,Nukes, Tanks,Fighter Jets are not to far along the way. All the king's plan will accomplish is the annihilation of an entire race of people who are innocent for the most part when it comes too the Politics of the world since he Ereased their memories and at this point in time 100 years has passed. People will blame Eren and call him Evil for what he did to his dad and I couldn't disagree even more. I understand killing Children was wrong but the Reiss Family WILLFULLY CHOOSES not to at the very minium defend their own people because of some Raciest self hatred of themselves. Eren had to remind his dad of what this was all for.

MikeWest

Does all of this imply that Eren is the final inheritor of the Attack Titan? Is this because he ultimately fails or ultimately succeeds? How will Ymir's sandcastle building skills hold up against Anti-Material-Rifle induced decapitation? No one answer any of this if you know obviously. I'm just venting, angry at the world that a week is 7 days long. Damn Babylonians and their "astute knowledge of lunar cycles". See you all tomorrow for Demon Slayer!

agoodwintv

Same, I'm going to be thinking about it all the way until the next episode. I didn't comment on it but the Mikasa shot was striking. Look at Armin being right once again!

agoodwintv

Yeah speaking of switching sides from one episode to the next, while I fundamentally disagree with a lot of Eren's actions in later parts of the show, it's moments like this and characters like the king and Zeke, etc. that shine a golden light on Eren's "we were born free" / "we deserve to live" ethos.

Zac Rushton

There's some really good images that explain the time travel of AOT, but it's basically a circle rather than a stream. If you pay close attention Grisha can only see Zeke when Eren is looking at Zeke - because he's viewing it through Eren's memory and perspective.

themightyabe

A few stray thoughts: 1. To put it into perspective, Grisha was the most pro-Eldian/anti-Marleyan in his past. Now it's true he changed, but it's still crazy that he saw Eren's next move and thought that it's too much for Marley. It should stress how crazy Eren is about to go. 2. Grisha's VA is easily one of the best in the series. A wonderful performance. 3. It's crazy that Eren's father, a side character that died off screen in the second episode, has been responsible for some of the most pivotal plot developments in the show. What a character. Great writing on Isayama's part.

Nick

He only said what we're all thinking

Mortis

Whenever Frieda’s eyes are purple it’s essentially the first king of the walls talking not really her so Frieda hasn’t necessarily bought into anything the first king of the walls is explaining how he came to the conclusion the walls and the eldians deaths was necessary.

Nick

or at the very least when Zeke is in Eren's peripheral vision I guess

Anonymous

I noticed fredas eyes changed color when she had to tell us the Kings will. I feel like over this season they have intentionally showed Erens eyes doing something similar when in battle. Made me question how free Eren is. Thoughts?

hays collins

To be honest kind of scoffed at the cycle thing…untill now hahaha congrats you were right!!!

SirLagginton

All I can say is be sure to pay attention to next episode's title

i_am_jam

Eren pulled the reverse uno cheat card

ComicalSkate

Holy shit. I am watching this show alongside you and my god this is so crazy. I never knew this show could be so mind-blindingly awesome!

Sh3nx

You´re definitely right in that this season really is something else. specially compared to what came before.

benj

The animation, direction, and music is just on another level as well. MAPPA are doing a significantly better job adapting these chapters than they did in Pt. 1 (and they still did a good job in Pt. 1)

Sh3nx

By the way. to have some concrete logic on how eren can see the future. Attack Titan memories move outside time since the coordinate its one dimension above reality, where Time its another coodinate like XYZ, it is represented in this tree where paths all flow towards the same place. Very interstellar like in some ways but with memories for the Attack titan. all titan powers reside in this dimension above reality. Ymir can take plenty of years to create a titan, but once it shifts it to reality it can be seen like it was just in an instant because he can just move between time like one moves between streets for example. in the case of the attack titan, his ability its to enter memories from this dimension, this can give access to grisha to see memories that are yet to come or memories that are from future titan attack holders because the only constant necesary there its to have the attack titan at one point or another. So when Grisha sees zeke, he isn´t really seeing zeke, he is seeing Eren´s POV on that moment where HE can see zeke, like an out of body experience from a ghost watching you. thats all that it needs for grisha to see the future. Again this means he can only see what he is going to experiment or future attack titan holders. and also, this ability can be suppressed, your future self might block this ability in certain memories, that's why grisha says "Why won´t you show me it all?", he hasn´t seen Eren´s memories of carla for example, so he doesn´t know that karla died that day. And also it seems that the future. or memories they see are not detailed nor complete, it seems that only the most memorable ones are the ones they can access. meaning they are still blind to plenty of events between memories.

benj

Ahh!! Demon Slayer actually coming to the channel is so incredible. I can hardly contain my excitement.

jdthebud

Alex, you have totally outdone yourself will the Zeke OP song this time! We totally need someone to dub it to the OP music.

RationallySassy

It’s crazy how this episode showed different perspectives of what we thought we knew. The one that stood out to me was when we saw Grisha hold the key and say ‘next time he’ll show him what’s in the basement’ and he’s looking at future Eren. We never got to see his face before that, even though we’ve seen that key frame and heard that line a billion times now, and now we see another perspective and it’s crazy!

R. Lewis

That was Historia's hand. Back when Eren kissed her hand at the end of Season 3, he unlocked the Attack Titan's ability to see the future, and from that point he's known a good deal of what's going to happen. That was the moment he changed, because he knew what he was going to do. Also, because time is a weird soup, what's happening here is Zeke is allowing Eren to see his father's memories more clearly than he's been able to before, and what he's seeing is Grisha receiving Eren's memories of the current day. So any time it seems like Grisha is seeing Eren or Zeke, what he's actually seeing is Eren's POV. Any time Grisha sees Zeke, Eren is standing behind him looking at Zeke, and any time Eren and Grisha are looking at each other Grisha is actually seeing himself through Eren's eyes. Which is really freaking trippy for him, I'd imagine.

Makima

To those who support pronatalist eugenics, I offer a quote from one of the greatest characters in all of Attack on Titan. "It doesn’t make a single difference. No matter what dreams or hopes you may have…no matter what blissful life you’ve lived until now…what happens to your body when it gets crushed by a rock is the same. Everyone dies sooner or later. Does that mean all life is meaningless? Was the fact that you were ever born meaningless from the start? Would you say the same of your dead comrades? Where those soldiers lives meaningless? No they weren’t! And our fight give meaning to those soldiers lives!! Those brave fallen men and women!! Those poor fallen men and women!! The only ones who can remember them are us, the living!! So we will die here, and trust the meaning of our lives to the next generation!! That is the sole way we can rebel against this cruel world!! My soldiers! Rage!! My soldiers! Scream!! My soldiers! FIGHT!!” Life's cruelty is its beauty and vice versa. The fact that we are alive is a statistical anomaly within itself. It truly encapsulates our insignificance. And yet, it is our insignificant existence which makes us significant. To say it is better to not have lived is a simple nihilistic solution to something vastly more complex. As Erwin proposes, life is not meaningless. We might not know the answer, but we move forward with our beliefs and leave the meaning of our lives for the next generation. That is the only way to rebel against the cruelty of life.

Etsch

Feel bad for Grisha, imagine what that feels like. His son told him their home was going to be attacked by Marley so he needed to go steal the founding titan, but he doesnt say when it happens or what happens to Carla. Grisha knows they are all in danger but can't do anything about it because Eren wont tell him whats actually going on.

Ramon Cintron

I mean as far as I understood Eren cannot infact interact with the past but Grisha is seeing Eren's memories so hes seeing Eren and zeke go into his memories meaning in the past he is seeing Eren's memories of him being there and probably haunting him to force him to man up. Like Zeke said Eren admited being disgusted by Grisha when he got the memory of what he did to the Reiss family but what I believe he meant is that he was disgusted with how weak willed his father was unwilling to kill children to save his own family. That's what i took from it

iaani

The Founding looks to be controlled by the first owner, the First King talking though Frieda in this episode. And it looks like the Attack Titan is controlled by the last person who owns it, and specifically the oldest version of that person. I wonder how was Falco able to see the future in episode 1 of season 4 when he was knocked out.

ArmdVctr

If this episode can't convince people that Eren is a villain now, I don't know what will.

Stefan

Damn, why did my comment get removed? :(

benj

Patreon randomly deletes comments sometimes for no reason. Or Goodwin deleted your comment lmao, I'd say thats less likely though.

benj

Lol just read some of these comments on here even, although its def the minority in this community. "Eren did nothing wrong" while we are watching him convince his Dad to murder children. Dude has already killed kids himself, like Zofia. People just don't care unless someone is given shit tons of screentime, if Eren sent a boulder into Sasha's skull during the Marley attack or any other character we've spent multiple seasons with, the entire fandom would HATE him forever. But because he does it to a bunch of new characters who we've "only" had 6 episodes to get to know they literally dont give a shit. This show is complicated as hell and I'm not gonna pretend like I know the right way to think about certain characters is, but you are supposed to be entertained and made extremely emotional by Eren's character, thats the genius of it. Unironically supporting him and his actions, defending the objectively horrific things he has done to certain innocent individuals, is downright suspect as hell and sheds light on your own moral framework.

Winnie

What an episode lol. Honestly as a manga reader, any “Is Eren truly the villain?” Discussions have been completely exhausted for me and I’m not really interested in them anymore for a few reasons, but mostly now bc I feel like it misses The Point. Unfortunately, I can’t talk about what The Point is bc of spoilers so instead I’m going to talk about how I felt about him my first time reading. I followed the manga for maybe 6 or so years on and off. I genuinely enjoyed it but did get frustrated with the pacing sometimes so I’d drop it for a while and then come back and binge and get reinvested in what was going on. While the crazy, insane, off-the-wall plot was great, the characters were what really made me come back. I do believe that is a pretty common sentiment overall with this series. I love our crew and how they all grew and changed, but Eren, in particular, was so interesting. He definitely wasn’t, and still isn’t, my favorite character, (that’s Armin for all 0 of you who are interested), but he still always had my attention. I had this sort of affection for him.The only way I can really describe it is that it’s like a having a really weird cousin who you never really enjoyed playing with when you were younger, but if they ever got bullied you would fight for them in a heartbeat. Isayama made Eren’s slip gradual, but obvious. But idk I still had hope. It was like that scene where the crew was still locked in the cell arguing about if Eren would go along with Zekes’s plan. More than anything it just hurts to see him going down this path. It was one thing to read in black and white Eren telling his dad to get up and fight against Frieda, but actually seeing the movement in full color while hearing his voice, made me tear up. All the signs were there the whole time that he could very likely become this type of person. Especially with the way that time works in this world, it felt inevitable. I really just didn’t want to believe that it would happen. What I’m most interested in though how everyone is going to interpret this. I saw someone comment how we can’t relate at all to this moral dilemma, which is true. It definitely seems to be on purpose. Obviously, we don’t have a full picture yet at this point in the anime, so I can’t wait to see how everyone reacts to the behemoth that Is the ending lol. This was more of a ramble than anything. This part of the story hurts me on a deep level and I just needed to vent my feelings.

Amber

im sticking by my man eren lol his character is so good

benj

just curious, what exactly are you sticking by? him killing children or just the saving eldia part, or something else entirely. I also agree that he is an amazing character...an amazing anti-hero or straight up antagonist at this point, still an incredible character nonetheless.

Nick

dude has to be the most well written protagonist/MC I've seen in such a long time. AOT is a modern classic

Amber

Ive loved Eren as a character the whole show and this honestly just made him way more interesting and fun to watch in my opinion. it doesnt have to be as black and white as i stick by him for the things you listed which comes off as you just kinda being a smart ass lol i just enjoy how complex he as a character and dont think think theres anything wrong with that, debating his later actions is a whole other topic.

benj

@Amber I know it isn't black and white and I wasn't tryna be a smart ass, if you say you are "sticking by" someone who is committing mass murder, i would like to know what exactly you are standing by. if you are standing by the innocent killing of people, than ill happily be viewed as a smart ass lmao. Clearly it seems you aren't one of those braindead Jaegerists tho, it seemed like you were in the original comment.

Amber

To be fair there’s a lot of Innocents getting killed by every side but I’m typically more drawn to darker characters so him being a “villain” is just more interesting to me lol he’s still prob my fav character of the show regardless with Levi as a close second tho

benj

@Amber True, but I still think Characters like Levi, Mikasa, Erwin, etc. haven't killed innocent children in this show. I think there personal beliefs and moral frameworks are what should be stuck too, not Eren's or Zeke's sides where they both want to do genocide in different ways. Im also fascinated with Eren's character and think its incredibly interesting to watch. The Writing is AMAZING.

Can't wait for the new ep reaction :)!!
