Gonna post this before watching, so I don't know if it's actually required, but it's practically tradition to point out that 1,000,000% is not, in fact, literal. More of a way for Deku to really hype himself up lol.

SirLagginton

If he really used that much % he'd just dissole into pieces

shahshahsbizadv

Can't wait to watch. Also don't know if you saw it already but Filmbuff gave you a shout-out on Twitter, it was really nice

Nick

Alright this is easily my favorite episode so far

Nick

Oh wow I just searched for it, can confirm it's true. Apparently he has watched some of Alex's AoT (Shingeki) videos as well

Nathan

Grand Torino: "You think One For All is more special than it really is". It's Midoriya that's special

Jabez Katsak

What Deku pulled off isn’t actually 1000000%, He just exceeded normal human limiters, look up “hysterical strength” lol

PKKite

So like how someone said last episode with Tiger. The author also noted in the manga that Magna(Big Sis Mag) the villain that attacked Pixibob is woman who transitioned from being a man. The opposite of Tigers situation. These are things the author explains usually after a chapter in some notes.

I’m kinda surprised how causal you seemed to view the events of the episode, you always keep me on my toes in terms of what you’ll latch onto and talk at length about lol. Keep in mind, this is a huge fight, it’s Dekus first fight against a villain one on one, where he couldnt/didn’t have a friend or trained hero come to help him, he had to stand his own against a particularly powerful person while protecting a civilian.

Nick

Update: If you ever find yourself wanting to rewatch the fight scene in this episode, I highly recommend checking out the original subbed version. Deku's Japanese VA kind of went absolutely ham for this episode. Like he captured a truly wrathful Deku, it's glorious Edit: However that's not to discredit the dub. I think they do a great job dubbing for this show in general, it's just that this specific fight between the villain and Deku imo has so much more raw power with the original actors

I like the parallels between Kota trying to take on a vastly stronger villain and inspiring Midoriya, and Midoriya taking on the sludge villain and inspiring All Might, it's a nice tie in especially since this is the first time Deku is taking on the role of a hero and succeeding. Another thing is that for all Kota mocks hero society and all the students in the hero course, he didn't run away and tried to save Midoriya to the best of his ability. I thought the "My Hero" title card at the end was a nice touch.

Aura Y

Kota's story is certainly a bit tropey and it's pretty heavily foreshadowed that Deku is the person that is going to turn it around for him. But I think it does show a darker side of being a hero. Sacrificing yourself at the risk of leaving behind loved ones. I can understand why Kota acts out, at least until a green haired boy saves your from the scariest event in your life happens. This show can definitely change tone pretty quickly from light-hearted school training to villains eating a severed hand and a blood-stained shot alluding to a missing hero.

Aura Y

Haha yeah, that was my impression too. I feel like the Kota storyline was the part that kept it underwhelming for him. But that's probably just my overassumption

bl0odm1st

So the text “My Hero” at the end was the title of the episode. They didn’t reveal it until that last frame.

Kollie123

I think the line in the dub that endears me to Kota is when he’s yelling at muscular that it’s his fault “nothing makes sense” dealing with loss at that age is crazy enough without the hero/villain stuff thrown in

I'm glad you're critical of the characters and the show in general. Deku is definitely a meddler, and that's not always a good thing.

MikeWest

Maybe they're trying to Darth Vader Bakugo Also, there should be 1,000 laws against going on hero patrol with your significant other/other parent of your child Also also, super cute the whole "My hero" bit because it's the first time someone's looked at Deku the way he and so many others look at All Might. My hero

Brimmy

one of THE best episodes of this anime imo its just so good

Emma Root

It's interesting apparently people really enjoy this episode, it's definitely not my favorite and am much more impacted by the episodes that follow this one. I think for similar reasons to Alex, I knew Deku would win and am more scared about what's happening with the other characters at this same time. But I get why people like it of course. I'm not at all saying I dislike it, just that it doesn't stick out to me besides on how it impacts other things I guess

Gabriel Ribeiro

I think you overstimated deku power because of the movie, he sure was strong in that movie.

MikeWest

Especially since now one of those other characters has apparently been reduced to a hand? I've been doing mental gymnastics thinking about how a bloody altar surrounded by candles + a severed hand next to gimp pinhead = cat lady being a-ok. Things are coming up bleak.

Kelsey Roberts

You’re correct in some ways. Magne is a trans woman. But she makes it very clear that she doesn’t care about society’s ideals and this includes the perceived need to “transition.” She is a woman, and doesn’t subscribe to what Japan thinks women should look like. Whereas Tiger is the epitome of masculinity since his transition, fitting with societal standards, Magne CHOOSES to be androgynous and she just kills whoever disagrees. ❤️

To answer your question about what is the limit of the percentage the author/artist of the Manga Kohei Horikoshi answered this question as well there is a column section in the manga that is used apparently for explaining small details that are missed during the writing process and this was one of them. See his quote below. "Fans and Colleagues alike have asked me. What's that mean? I totally don't get it." I'm really sorry if it hard to understand. Of course it wasn't actually 1 million percent---That was just a way of expressing Izuku's intense emotions and energy. Like when some one summons incredible strength during a crisis. I will be working hard to make everything going foreword easier to understand, more cheery, openhearted and more fun--In the hopes I can eventually do away with this supplement column"-Kohei Horikoshi

Alex: “just hit him with a Detroit smash” Deku: *finishes it with a Detroit smash*

This is my favorite episode of the show. Gives me chills every time.

I’m surprised you didn’t connect more with Kota tbh. I was pleasantly surprised that they included a character with his perspective into the show. It’s really easy to write a superhero show and leave out the fact that damn, this probably really ruins families and causes a lot of hatred over the unavoidable chaos that comes with this type of world. Especially since it came from a kid, who imo is pretty justified in his way of thinking (from his experience, him hating quirks is very reasonable). It was really nice to have him come around in a way that, while it felt a bit trope-y, wasn’t super forced either. My Hero Aca has a great way of not doing things in some crazy unique way, yet still being really compelling to me.

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

diversity win! The villain trying to crush your head is a transwoman! (JK, I love magne, go off sis)

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

Im sure a lot of people have already explained the 1 million percent thing to you, but Deku was kinda just hyping himself up, he just went past his limits a little 😅

This is the first time I think you've missed (a bit) of the point in your analysis. You're always on spot, but this episode didn't really hit you. Even Kota's character being a little forced down the throat, as the astonishing coincidences betwen him and muscular, this fight to Deku is a HUGE deal. You repeated around 3 times about this being his "second kill", but the Stain's fight doesn't even come close to Muscular's in terms of importance and stakes for Deku. This is the first time he's facing a villain all by himself, the first time he's protecting somebody else all by himself. This moment is almost as big as him running to save Bakugo at the start of the show. It's the first time he gets to "encarnate" a hero like All might, smiling and saying everything will be ok. The first time he's the hero for somebody else as he dreamed so much he would be someday. Kota's his first fanboy, as Deku was for Allmight. I guess you focused too much on Kota and forgot about all those huge things that were on stake here for Deku. This was his first validation that he could be a hero like Allmight was for him. And just one more observation: I dunno if binging MHA was responsible for this, or watching the movie before Season 3. Deku is ridicuously overpower at the movie, so I gues that fact took away a little bit of the "shock value" a 100% smash had this episode and will continue to have going on throught the show. 100% smashs does permanent damage to Deku's body, and since he dominated 5% full cowl, he was avoiding as much as possible using 100% of OFA. Using 3 goddamn times 100% with the same arm will not go unoticed, and will never go anymore. Consider 100% smashes a huge deal from now on, cause every one of them will take a toll on Deku. Anyway, great reaction as always and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season!

I was definitely more like you Goodwin when watching this episode, I had no idea this was a "favorite" episode of the show that people love, to me its pretty average and I much prefer plenty of episodes in other arcs in this season and even the last one. Kota is an extremely unlikeable and annoying child, and the stakes of this fight for me have almost 0 build up as we have no idea who this giant buff dude is. I guess its supposed to be totally insane that Deku...the main character of a superpower show...uses his superpower? Idk I don't get the hype people are describing here.

Me too... I think that the talk todoroki had with Deku had lore impact on his journey to me than this fight. It felt like a fight where he had to go beyond what he could sustain and hurt himself baaaad to do what is right by his heart. Not much different from the usual.

RubyDian

I never thought this series would make me cry, but the first time I watched this ep the ending hit me just right (and many others) that I absolutely ugly cried because I was so moved. I was just into it. Even watching it here made me tear up, ugh.

Thilde

I swear I'm not trying to be one of those annoying elitists (i like the dub) but you should definitely check out the japanese version of the muscular fight. Deku's voice actor was absolutely insane. Some of the best acting I've heard, it really made it feel even more like a life-or-death situation

Anonymous

Not going to lie, the way you kept unfairly hating on Kota way past what was reasonable, along with you really just glancing over so many of the powerful and most important things in this episode, which is one of the biggest turning points for the series and one of the most powerful and impactful episodes of it, really is making me think about dropping watching any more of your reactions to it.

One of my fav episodes ever lol
