Ah yes, Perry the Platypus, this is my Attack on Titan Depressionator! Episode 8 of Season 4!

hays collins

Haha I thought I check one more time thank goodness I did.

hays collins

I just love your discomfort of all the moral ambiguity in this haha

the perfect thumbnail lol

Aura Y

The cycle continues... Falco has heard both perspectives, but Gabi only knows and understands this side of hate. I totally can understand Gabi's mindset, but I'm also sad it led to this tragic outcome. I'm proud of Jean-Jean and Falco for at least making an effort to stop the hate from continuing to bleed out. May your optimism come through in this cruel world.

Anonymous

It's so hard for me to pin Eren down as a character. I can genuinely say I have no idea where he is going and it scares the shit outta me lol.

Keegan Brakhage

this episode started a ridiculous amount of hate on gabi lol. like people on the internet were ruthless, people agreeing with floch who wanted to throw her off the airship and so forth. it's like the ultimate test of the show's commentary on the audience. and a lot of people failed. a lot.

Nick

Update: Eren laughing-crying to deal with Sasha's death is very reminiscent of Hannes, but in this scene he has it under more control. It's extremely uncomfortable to watch. I can understand why he's arrived at this point in his life, but it is tragic. Also I was wondering did you get any relief after hearing the og scouts openly say that they don't support Eren, but rather he forced their hand? When I saw this episode it was exactly what I needed. I knew several of the characters we've been following wouldn't be completely on board with this, Jean and the rest of the scouts delivered that for me this episode.

Nick

Yeah it was sad to see. It continued for the rest of the season part which is just... sad. She's a completely brainwashed kid. Of course I was pissed that she killed Sasha, but it's tragic for Gabi's character too.

Maia Brodsky

I totally thought the same thing about that rifle info card. They are such trolls man. I love that they went there.

Anonymous

I was so excited for you to reach this episode cause I was just like "Yes, we need to get the Scout's perspective, it must be seen how there is DIVISION and LOSS OF TRUST and they don't all agree with this and Eren went rogue and forced them into cooperating to protect him, which is even more frustrating." And then I remembered...that this is the episode with Sasha...and I was just....uurrrrrgggggggg....we get perspective--important perspective--about the others at the cost of Sasha :'( Nooooooooooooo Potato Girl :( But like...our OG crew don't condone Eren's actions. Yay????

Anonymous

Haha basically AOT season 4: Eren commits war crimes and no one knows what he’s thinking

Anonymous

I honestly don't think Eren is Laughing at the fact Sasha died I think that is his general reaction to hearing bad news because the way I understood that scene or my interpretation was Eren was remembering that Flash back we saw when he heard what her last words were. Alot of ppl seem to think that he is just done and has lost it. But to be honest we have seen him laugh at bad situations instead of crying and people react to bad news differently and to Eren he just uncomfortably laughs. I am not sure if others interpreted that way but that is how I saw it. Even more so when the last scene has him making that face of horror when he clinched his teeth together.

Nick

Come to think of it, Eren telling Falco to stay and listen was possibly one of the best things he could have done for Falco. It's a really twisted situation, but imo that moment really pushed Falco away from the conflict and more as a spectator to both sides. (Talking about episode 5 I mean, when Eren and Reiner were talking.)

Jabez Katsak

You should rewatch the Reiner and Bertholdt Titan reveal scene so what they say makes more sense lol

Anonymous

Oh yeah, like I personally had given up on Eren at this point, but even I could recognize that Eren laughing crying wasn't out of character as much as it freaked everyone else out. I immediately thought of when Hannes died and Eren just broke right there. But only Mikasa saw that happen, so no one else (that I can think of right now) has seen him react to a death that way, (And they can't see his face like we could with our audience camera angle) so they just see him laughing at Sasha dying and are...well, just look at their faces in that shot, Levi looks flat out disturbed/shocked. But my mind immediately went back to Hannes's death and his reaction made sense, he is reacting in grief, just...in a way that threw everyone for a loop--but has happened before!

shahshahsbizadv

Also when Bert is talking to everyone in season 2 episode 11, it takes on a whole different meaning

Megan

Armin and Mikasa crying over Sasha hurt so bad. You know a show’s getting dark when the comedic relief character gets killed off. I appreciate Jean’s character in this episode a lot. He really is one of the most sensitive attack on titan characters. Floch’s perspective on this mission being successful is terrible, but understanding considering considering 95% of his comrades died on his first mission.

Xylen

I can hardly express how happy and proud I am of Jean's response to Floch wanting to toss the kids out of the airship. To have something so deeply personal and tragic happen only moments before, at this person's hand, and even have them try to kill you, too, and then still be able to take such a wide, reasoned view... I fuckin love Jean. Jean for President. The same goes for Falco, too. I love how he seems to be taking the role of an observer. He's just a kid trying to make sense of the world, absorbing information, seeing how both sides are hurting and raging at each other. Obviously this was still his home too, and he has personal connections there, but it doesn't feel like he's fully made up his mind about the people of Paradis.

R'Mani Leavell

One of my issues with Gabi is the line she said to Falco, "Did you see it happen". Did she think just because she didn't see Erens hometown get trampled, they shouldn't have had that happen to them. Don't get me wrong, everyone who lived in Liberio didn't deserve what happened to them. But neither did the people of Paradise. It's a cycle that has to stop somewhere. Its not like I expect her to be the one to stop it. But its like you said, She can understand it. I don't see her not chasing after the airship and a gun, climbing aboard and shooting at any enemy solider she sees. My problem is, she doesn't even try to understand why what's happening, is happening. P.S Flochs, name is pronounced, Flock. Like a flock of birds.

Xylen

I love and hate how closely Floch's mindset resembles real people I've seen online and in real life. He's a perfect reflection of that smug, ultranationalist, "us vs. them", "I say/do what other people are too afraid to" kind of personality. So self-righteous in his cruelty.

Brimmy

can you imagine learning about this death ON TWITTER because no one can shut the fuck up and keep their spoilers to themselves?! Like i didn't know how she died or who/what killed her I was spazzing about the anime to a friend who was uber far into the manga and when he asked me my fav and i said "gabi" he was like \this reaction is going to be even better\, that and gabi having a gun and going to board the air ship was all i needed to know what was going to happen Gabi is only my fav cuz she's nuts/insane and will most likely have the BEST character development if and when she starts realizing that everything she knows is wrong. get ready for even more pain though cuz they didn't plan these episodes out very well XD Edit: OH RIGHT i remembered something: people were like \why is eren laughing?!\ as if they don't remember how he reacted when Hannes died @.@ idk maybe its just me being obsessive over watching reactors so all these eps are hella fresh in the brain but to not remember something like that is just silly

Alex Begley

I think her point is that there's no proof it's not a lie told by Eren or whoever she thought Falco heard it from. And it's the same type of brainwashing that's been done throughout our own time to make others feel less than human (Jews in Nazi Germany, African American slaves in America). She doesn't think of how they feel because she's been taught that it doesn't matter. Eren sort of does a similar thing after finding out about Reiner, Bertholdt and Annie. In his mind nothing could make him believe in the heat of the moment that they weren't monstrous people who deserved to die, until of course he had more time to sit and dwell on everything. I think the same could happen to Gabi given the same amount of time and similar experiences Also your pointing out how to pronounce Floch's name like a flock of birds makes me think it might been an intentional move to insight the idea that he's like a sheep in a flock

Aaron Ong

I'm happy to see you finally meeting my favorite character, Yelena. I know I stated it was Hange before (and she's still in the 2nd spot), but that was before Season 4 Part 1 had finished airing. Such an interesting addition to the cast, and I think you'll find her very interesting. I can't wait for you to form some opinions of her

Megan

Yeah, the AOT fandom’s notorious for spoiler. Sasha’s death was spoiled for me before it was even animated by manga readers.

agoodwintv

Yeah there are a handful of characters that give some light in the darkness right now. But it all seems so overwhelming for them. So many obstacles and none of them are really natural leaders IMHO. It's all great stuff of course :D

Anonymous

Sasha's death meant different things for Jean and Eren. For Jean, it was a symbol of the tragic and meaningless suffering that war causes. For Eren, it was a reminder of why he's fighting, that these people have and will kill people he loves. So in one of them, it caused and doubt and in another, it reinforced his conviction.

Ramon Cintron

A tornado touched down about 5 miles from where I live and we spent the last hour expecting it to hit us and thankfully it passed by just barely out of my range (we still had alot of damage done here by the huge thunderstorm and 80 mile winds) And the whole time I was legit thinking to myself 'Am I going to die before Alex uploads this episode reaction?' That's how obsessed I am with your take on life and things... Let's make this official and start an Alex religion.

Jk844

So you’ve just been introduced to Yelena, the tallest human character in AoT. She doesn’t have an official height but she’s been estimated to be around 202cm (6’6 1/4”). To put that in perspective, the previous tallest characters were Bertholdt at 192cm and Miche at 196

Paradoxically, this episode elevated Gabi to one of my favorite characters. Besides being PHENOMENALLY voice-acted, Gabi's monologue to Falco in the alleyway really showcases the things she cares about as well as what I think are her core character motivations. There's a conception that what drives Gabi is pure, base hatred towards the island devils and complete allegiance to Marley. While she exhibits both this rage and this faith in the Marleyan military, both of these come because of a deeper belief that motivates her. Gabi wants to believe that the world she lives in is just. Hers is a childlike conception of justice — she believes that good people have good things come their way, and bad people are punished. Those who work hard and are deserving will get their reward — this is why she gets so worked up when she sees Falco as threatening her inheritance of the armor. It's something she risked her life for and that everyone agrees she *deserves*; it's something that Falco doesn't even need because Colt has secured his family's status whereas the Braun family will be losing theirs along with Reiner. She is deeply indignant at any perceived infraction against this sense of fairness that she believes the world runs by. The biggest example of injustice in what is supposed to be a "just world" is the internment zone. This season has shown how much Gabi cares about her family, her friends, her whole community. She knows that these are good, kind people in this zone. Why, then, are these good people made to suffer, spit at when they try to leave? Good people have good things come to them and only bad people are punished, right? Marley, then, offers her an answer to this question that allows her to retain her idealism: it's the Eldians on Paradis who are the source of this injustice. All Eldians have inherited this original sin of destroying the world, but while the mainlanders have atoned and do live good lives, those on Paradis continue to be evil devils and get to live in their Paradise unpunished. If this is true, then only the island is the source of this imbalance of fairness in the world; once these evil people get the punishment they deserve, the scales will be set right. Everyone will see that "true" Eldians are good people, and they will be treated as they should. Because the world is a just place where people always get what they deserve. This is not the world that Gabi lives in. Yet she *has* to cling to this belief. She cannot fathom that bad things will just happen to good people for no good reason. So, she takes it as her responsibility to set the wrongs of the world right again. This is the source of her indignance, and the reason she has so much faith in Marley who allows her to maintain the hope that this is still a good, idealistic world. But now, Gabi's world is about to expand. She's being taken to Paradis and there is no return ticket. Recently, Eren and Reiner discussed how Reiner went to Paradis and broke the wall. Even after he came to brefriend the Scouts, and learned what the people within the walls, he attacked Trost, he killed even more people. Reiner did it because he felt like he was saving the world; he wanted to be respected and revered as a hero. Eren just now did the same thing: he lived on the continent for months, concluded they were the same as on Paradis; still resolved to smash the town, to "destroy his enemies." Now, Gabi is about to undergo the same type of journey. But what will she do, when she meets the people within the walls? Can she come to know the other group and still make the same choice that Reiner and Eren did? My sense is no: once her illusion is shattered and she realizes that the people across the sea are the same as her community at home, she will be just as committed to seeing them live in the world that they deserve as she is with her own family back home. At least, that's the direction her arc seems to be heading in now that she's being hauled to Paradis. And so her character seems to be running parallel yet in an opposite direction to Eren, which is pretty significant to me. This child, this brand new set of eyes, might be able to provide a more hopeful and less bleak way of viewing this conflict through the growth that she's about to experience. In so far as this is a story about cycles of violence and hatred being passed down over generations, I feel like Gabi's lens, as this naive child whose worldview is warped and tested by this war, is exactly what this story needs.

Nick

Can I just say I love the comments you leave on these videos. Even though they can be lengthy, they're always extremely well thought out and insightful. Honestly you're a really great member of the community imo I absolutely agree that Gabi is a perfect character to introduce for this kind of story. Naive and thrust into unknown territory. It's a classic storytelling staple but can be super effective. It's one of the reasons I really like Gabi from a writing perspective. I especially love the contrast between her and Falco. It's so interesting. Anyway, keep making great comments!

Sasha was my favorite character so I was devastated when that bullet hit her. RIP the one true potato girl. She was pure, kind, a protector, had the best hearing and aim of anyone in the show, and was one of the few characters who had passion outside of surviving and comrades, which was food. May you find lots of food in the afterlife Sasha T_T

SirLagginton

And there goes my third favourite character. First Moblit and now Sasha. Jean is still going strong though!

malikparah

Zeke being a traitor is one of the few things i've been able to call in advance on first watch. he's been sus since ep 2 when it was revealed he hasn't told marley he has royal blood and trying to tip everyone off they were being listened in on but what sealed the deal was ep4 Eren telling Falco that he'd received the baseball equipment from his family considering there's only one person in the whole show who has referenced baseball. after that everything he did was sus. Sadly i got spoiled on the Gabi killing Sasha but it did give me time to prepare myself for it so when they did that stare down after Sasha sniped her Hannes mid fall of Liberio I just thought to myself I can't even be mad. But it's so interesting the portion of the fandom that blindly hates gabi and wants to be see her beaten up, killed etc seem to use the same philosophy she does to bypass all the nuance

Anonymous

You know the show is about to make an even darker turn when the comic relief character dies 😔

BubbleTea

Although Sasha's last word "Meat" seems ridiculous, it reminded Eren of what he's fighting for. Freedom. Remember meat was scarce, and a sign of how restricted Paradis people were due to lack of land from being oppressed by titans. To Sasha, being able to take back land to raise animals for meat was her idea of freedom. That flashback always gets me.... just knowing Sasha is gone from here on.

Derrick C. Shields

I've always kind of thought the argument between Falco and Gabi left something to be desired. Falco says that Eldia coming here to Liberio is just "revenge" for what Marley did to them years ago. Gabi responds with "did you *see* it happen?" Which feels like how you make a character respond when you're focused on clearly laying out their arc, rather than arguing like a person. The obvious response - to me, even if Gabi isn't a clear state of mind - would be "Falco, I'm not sneaking into Paradis YEARS after the fact to attack their civilians. I'm trying to stop the aggressors who are RIGHT THERE, leaving on an airship and who will in all likelihood, continue their aggression." The discussion feels like it takes the easy way out, makes some false equivalencies, and sets up the viewer with the best chance of *hating* Gabi when all is said and done. Personally, while Eren and Armin are the only scouts I'm really mad at for this attack, I still feel more empathy toward Gabi than most, I think. It's crazy to me how many people treat this episode like it's the Eclipse in Berserk. Like... at the end of the day, Sasha was a soldier and she died at the hands of another soldier. Which is also why I think Jean and anyone else would have been justified in shooting Gabi, since she was still an active threat. But throwing her out of an airship after she had become a POW? Uh, no. Anyway, lots of people argue with emotion here and act like what Gabi did was "treacherous" in some way...? Precisely 0% of me can get behind that. Sure, we knew stuff that she didn't - Eren was the main aggressor and Sasha wasn't doing anything like civvie-killing. But like, why would Gabi know or be expected to deduce this very specific "rogue warrior" situation? Not only is it understandable, I'd argue it's natural to assume that the soldiers who showed up in time with Eren's surprise attack have identical goals. I'm not saying "Gabi did nothing wrong" but... Sasha knew what putting that uniform on could mean. The Gabi hate post-this-chapter in the manga was NUTS, man. You don't even know.

Polygon

Reiner's Titan was missing portions of it's armor because it was only a partial transformation. As we know, transforming takes drive and willpower (something that Reiner is unfortunately short on at the moment) but he managed to dig deep for the sake of the kids and in order to save Galliard. It's a neat visual metaphor for who Reiner is beneath the armor and how Reiner is regaining his humanity while Eren is depicted to be increasingly monstrous. Reiner ran when the Jaw Titan was eaten in the past but this time, he's chosen to fight and protect it and even more poetically, Porco Galliard just so happens to be the brother of the previous holder he abandoned.

Sasha's death was one of the few plot points i WASNT spoiled on. when i first saw it, it was just more dirt in the face.

a. tree

I knew that it was going to happen, but the fact that they used the same soundtrack as when Eren found out that Marco died way back in Season One made it such a gut-punch.

Anonymous

when Gabi realised she could board the ship, I paused the episode and pretended it ended there. I didn't continue for weeks because I knew something terrible was going to happen. I legitimately needed time I couldn't do it 🙃

WeatherReport

Zeke has never been loyal to Marley. People just assume he is but, we never see his POV. Just like Kruger had to play the role of a bad guy; so does Zeke.

I agree that the hate for Gabi is overblown, sometimes the writing for her does not leave much nuance that would make her more likeable or relatable. But I think the response from Gabi to Falco about "not seeing it either" was in-character writing. Because at that point, I don't think it's about her going after the enemies to prevent further aggression. It's a response to justify to herself that she's pointing her anger at the right people, "the island devils". You might be right about better dialogue leading to a better perception of the character though.

benj

:( No more Potatoes

Nick

I believe in Jean and Connie supremacy

Nick

I never thought about how it's a direct callback to Reiner running all those years ago. That's an awesome way to think about it.

meg

The Gabi hate on the internet is so intense… I honestly think Gabi is an interesting character and she parallels a lot to young Reiner and Eren and they have done similar things. Yet Eren and Reiner don’t get the same level of hate towards them as Gabi. It feels really creepy that so many fans want a child to be tortured violently for her actions but also praise Reiner or Eren for doing similar things. I guess in a way it’s a testament to Isayama’s writing because people are just going into the circle of hate without trying to understand the other side. I think the most interesting part of this episode is the differing perspectives of Jean and Floch. I think Jean views the loss of 6 soldiers during the battle as a huge loss because his first experience with war was when the titans broke through into Trost and Marco died. He then was motivated to make sure everyone who died would have died with purpose and not an unknown corpse. To him every person dead is a horrible thing. While Floch on the other hand was first introduced to war with the battle against the Beast Titan and witnessed every single soldier die except him. To him victory is killing the enemy any way possible and every life is expendable. It’s really interesting to see the different perspectives from within the scouts as well.

Anonymous

I really think that Gabi is just like Eren from season 1, except we can substitute the word "titan" for "Eldian".

DrowsyCody

Gabi gets the hate she does because we got to know her victims like Sasha we followed Sasha from the begging and gabi killed her gabi is the villian in the situation but that doesn’t mean Sasha was all good either

About Eren’s laugh: he always coped with laugh. When there is much trauma - he laughs. Just remember the finale of the 2nd season: he laugh LOUD OUT HARD after Hanness’s death
