I imagine that combustion man has a high pitched voice, so when he's around an enemy he doesn't speak because he wouldn't come across as less of a threat. No one can convince me otherwise

You might have heard this before, but the reason Hama was so suprised at 52:00 is because the move Katara did is not traditional to water bending and is very earth like. It's a subtle way of implying how the characters have grown and learnt from eachother. What makes this more poetic is that Katara picked this up from Toph and last episode was the episode they fight, showing that regardless of their fight they are still important to one another. It goes from them fighting to Katara getting the upper hand through something she learnt from Toph.

Also, another way of interpreting it would be to show that not one character is the role model (as they implied last episode) because despite what their actions, they still grow and learn from eachother.

How does the fire nation clear out towns so quickly. Haha. Same in day of black sun

I love how the Gaang got scared of Hamma in the beginning of the episode like they aren’t the 4 most powerful kids in the world haha

HOLD UP HOLD UP HOLD UP HAMMAS EYES ARE GREY!!! Did Hamma blood bend her eyes to change their color to disguise herself in the fire nation is that possible???

What also hits me hard about the scene with Sokka talking to Toph is Katara's reactions. Her kind of holding back tears when Sokka confessed he doesn't remember his mom's face. Her actual tears when Toph confessed that her mother didn't care about her the way Katara did. She really does take on a huge emotional burden from everyone as well as her own self. Which is why it cuts even deeper when she tells Sokka that he didn't love their mother as much as she did in The Southern Raiders. She heard what he said back then and brought it up in the worst way possible. But can't really blame her, given her situation. The Puppetmaster also sets up for The Southern Raiders, in a more obvious way. Appa in charge of Momo and Hawkey. They don't call him appa for nothin!

hopefully there's no machiavelli stans that saw the end rant about the whole "ends justifying the means" debate lol. although i do feel like that school of thought can have merit in more isolated situations, i don't think it really does in the grand scheme of things

I never sensed that you hated characters. I know you like some more than others but hate them? I think you should ignore those criticisms. They are not constructive and come from a place of disappointment that you don't feel the same way about characters as they do.

I love that you've leaned into calling it "Appa's Day Off", even though that's the least accurate description of that episode XD Also...there are people that defend Hama?? It weirded me out enough when people defended Thanos, but HAMA? Like I said in the previous ATLA rewatch, I don't like painting people as good and evil, I prefer to look at peoples actions and choices. And no, I don't see Hama as 'evil' or 'bad', her history absolutely justifies her anger. What she chooses to do with that anger, however, crosses a line. Like you say, if it was against the soldiers that took her it might be more forgivable (but still wrong, in my opinion), but she's lashing out against innocent villagers and there's no justification for that. Interesting to note that Jet and Hama have similar storylines, but the Earth Kingdom, the 'good guys', end up killing Jet, whereas the Fire Nation, the 'bad guys', just imprison Hama. "Anyone is capable of great good and great evil."

I love how when katara stops Hama's waterbending head-on Hama is shocked. It's because rather than redirect her waterbending like is common for waterbenders, she just stops it head-on just like an earthbender. This show does a lot of that where they have different benders use techniques from other elements. It just goes to show how much of a master Katara is to be able to use many different elemental styles in her bending.

would you be willing to react to ATLA theories by the youtuber "Hello Future Me"? His theories are so spot on at fleshing out the avatar world. To the point that there's no way it wasn't intentional by the creators. and it just makes me appreciate the entire series more. you wouldn't have to watch his entire playlist. there's a few that i think would be great to react to

I always miss it when u go to collect questions for ur monthly Q&A so Imma comment them here: - What types of videos do you watch on YouTube - Why did you move to Colorado - What is your daily routine as King Alex😎

Solid advice. You're 100% right of course, but it takes constant reminding not to feed into that kind of thing

agoodwintv

That's a great point about the imprisonment vs death. I think it was less that people were supporting Hama (although I believe there may have been some of that) and more that there was support for bloodbending as a justifiable tool against the fire nation.

agoodwintv

Ah yes, I had forgotten, but when I started this rewatch my plan was to watch some of Hello Future Me's videos at the end. I think I've seen one of his videos, the one about bending genetics.

In Kataras story at the start, do you think someone was corpse-bending Nini after she died in the snowstorm?

Anonymous

Also fun idea: Hama didn’t bloodbend the gang in the beginning as she heard Katara’s water tribe story and then realised that the kids aren’t fire nation.

Oh my lord I just became a patreon member and This is the first thing I see?? I feckin love this

kingafreund

I do find it very telling that she's the only one who escaped, doesn't seem like Hama even tried to free some of her fellow water benders as well.
