Just so you know, Deku originally referred to a type of plain wooden doll or puppet and then came to be used as an insult meaning “useless person.” So when Bakugo calls Midoriya 'Deku', it's an insult. Hence why Uraraka apologized for calling him that.

Always the insightful character analysis! Bakugou seems a bit over the top initially, the bully for bullying sake, but I look forward to seeing how people feel moving forward. In regards to the All Might/Deku relationship, I can definitely see where the favoritism could be troublesome especially in the academic setting. I think I do prefer Aizawa's methods a bit more at this point.

Ohhhhh gawsh, Alex. Loving your Bakugo analysis. I will say that this series, while it does have definite fan service, treats hero costumes with a lot of creativity and integrity. Usually you can assume that if something is designed that way, there is utility in the design. Except for Deku's dumb bunny costume. I love him to death but he looks janky and very much like a kid playing dress up.

Bakugou is my favorite character so far and I'm loving these analysis about him, can't wait to also know your opinion about his development thru the show ! All his flaws makes him such an interesting character

No matter what any fan boy tells me I will never like Bakugo because he is someone who literary spent his life bullying and practically torturing people he saw as beneath him for no reason at all and everyone just loves him for it cause he's 'cool' and has a strong power the same as with the fanbase and I will never understand him like Being a garbage person is not okay unless you have a cool power and character design then it's okay to be adored this is a guy who literary was telling Deku how pathetic and invaluable he was to the world making him feel worse and worse just for being born different and how he wouldnt amount to anything in comparison to him and people still say he's soo cool. I cannot stand Bakugo and his fanboys...

I understand it's hard to dub and still fit the timing and character's mouth movements, but this is where I think the dub doesn't do justice in explaining the nickname Deku and Ururaka's impact on changing the meaning. In Kanji Izuku's name is 出 (izu) 久 (ku). Kanji can be read in different ways, so “de” is another reading of the kanji 出. So Bakugou read it as 出 (de) 久 (ku), and uses it as an abbreviation for Dekunobou which means someone who can't do anything. Ururaka also read it as 出 (de) 久 (ku) but instead thought it's abbreviated for 'dekiru' which means the ability to do something (i.e. can, or be able to). And yes I had to look this up cause idk Japanese and was confused when I 1st started MHA lol

I originally watched this anime subbed so Deku's name being explained made perfect sense and then i watched it dubbed and i was like...yeah no this is never going to get across to Dub Anime Only Watchers thank you for this i always love when people use the characters to explain what something means :3

That was my feeling about him at first as well, I think what softened the edges a bit for me was realizing that he's not being glamorized in that behavior. He's a troubled kid.

Agreed, Bakugou is one of my favourites too and really creates a fun and volatile dynamic adding a lot of spice!

To be honest, it makes NO FUCKING SENSE why Deku was in last place. He had been through 10 months of intense physical training... and he lost every challenge except pitching to a guy who can harden himself, a guy who shoots electricity, someone who can talk to animals, and a girl whose only power is invisibility... That has always bugged me, and will never not. Haha

Interesting take that Bakugo seems to see in Deku something he has that he doesn't. I started to think at this point that Bakugo sees himself as the best and strongest and sees in Deku his idea of prototypical weakness, which means he hates Deku because I've seen that people tend to hate what they fear the most in becoming. But in actuality they are both missing something the other has.

I love the end credit scene. Also, the reason Bakugou is angry is because he used to top, but now Deku wants to top, and he doesn’t like that tought. (Guys it was a joke please don’t come after me😭)

I think Bakugo is incredibly insecure, and he masks it with his ego, and needs to feel superior to others. He's a narcissist. He hates Deku, because like you said: Deku has something he doesn't: security. Deku may not be confident, and he may not seem traditionally brave, and he's awkward. However he knows himself and doesn't back down, and so seeing that is a huge punch in the face to Bakugo. To him it's a threat. It pushes against his defense mechanism of believing he's superior to everyone, because it hits him right in his biggest weaknesses. Bakugo is strong and passionate and powerful because he has been told his whole life he's a prodigy, and he has to live up to that. Secretly he's worried he can't. Deku has been told his whole life he's worthless and powerless, but does everything in his power to change that and become his best self. Bakugo wishes he had the true drive and spirit Deku has, and so he needs to bully him and belittle him so that he can maintain his false sense of superiority. That's at least how I see things. Maybe it's a different story, and I'm reading into it wrong.

Oh god I never knew this but ive also never watched AOT in dub so...for me this is another reason NOT to watch AOT in that horrible dub lmao Erwin's voice as Iida's would ruin his character for me 0 cap. Erwin's Japanese VA is like 60% of the character behind Erwin imo.
