(I don't think this is a spoiler as it gets meantioned fairly quickly), but there are quirks that are less destructive and more for resource production/manufacturing! Though I don't think the economy is specifically addressed my personal headcanon has always been they're able to afford these things because resources are more readily available.

Nick

Okay I ended up saving the last MHA video and this one, that's why I didn't comment and messed up my streak. Although, commenting on videos consistently probably isn't something to be proud about but still. We're back in business Also, I really loved this episode a lot. I just watched it like 40 minutes ago.

agoodwintv

That makes sense especially in light of the young healing lady in this episode. That does change my "MHA economy is doomed" thesis...

agoodwintv

I'm enjoying these early episodes a lot. There's a nice balance of humor / heart

Stephen

edit: nvm I was beaten to the punch again XD you're theory about the economics was good I know it was in part humor but I believe a key element is quirks can radically shift the economy and provide a huge production/efficiency gain

Xylen

The music in this show is incredible. There was a time a few years ago where I basically just had the season 1 and 2 OSTs on loop all day every day in my headphones at work lol.

Francesca White

i actually really like Deku as a protagonist, because as a crybaby i love the crybaby representation in the hero role lol

Anonymous

I never looked it up, but the nurse (recovery girl) sounds like the voice of grandma pinako from fma brotherhood. Might be why it sounded familiar.

malikparah

Since you were saying some of the voices sounded familiar aside from All Might being Armstrong, the glasses busybody is voiced by Scar from Fma:b and he's dub Erwin from AOT. The old lady/recovery girl is Pinako Rockbell from fma:b and the little mouse who was one of the judges/UA staff doing the commentary is Barry the Chopper from fma:b

Paul

I wasn’t very excited about you starting a shonen series but I ended up catching up to all the 90+ episodes in a week! Yes there is a good amount of focus on the action but it is also a very positive show with good writing and humor and, like you said, with extremely good music.

DrowsyCody

You gotta assume at some point there are people with quirks of manipulating metal and cement and glass who can build whole city blocks in a day and I guarantee the school has a hand and a couple of them to build all these training cityscapes and arenas

Albert Rhodes

So, I've had this theory for the last few seasons (and don't worry, this is not a spoiler on its own. more food for thought moving forward) that Izuku has a sort of meta-quirk. The doctor who sees him as a child says that he should have manifested a quirk similar to his mother's or father's, or some combination of the two. His mother says that she can draw items towards herself, and his father breathes fire. While, on the surface, he doesn't have either of these, I believe that his natural quirk is to bring the fire out in other people. Just think about All Might's and Ururaka's (the girl) response to him. Well, it's food for thought, anyway.

I really like funimation dubs. They keep alot of voice actors and It's fun to hear familiar voices in different roles. Unlike other companies that produce dubs, they don't use the same 2-3 actors/actresses for protagonists and actors that voice side characters are given chances at big roles depending on the show. Like the VA for a supporting character like Maj. Armstrong being cast as a main role such as All Might.

agoodwintv

I like him so far too. He reminds me of friends of mine who are like little brothers to me. I give them a hard time but love them for who they are.

agoodwintv

Awesome, it always makes me happy to hear things like this. I'm glad you enjoyed it

agoodwintv

I like it. Thinking about it in that meta way seems to be part of what the show is all about. What are their heroic qualities, actually?

Brimmy

So cuz u started this it made me really excited for MHA So i restarted Season 4 (i was 15 eps into it ages ago but couldn't remember anything) I'm almost done with it and will soon be caught up to whatever ep S5 is out with my heart is full, everything is amazing I'm so excited for u to see all this series has to offer <3 <3 <3 <3 also yes Best Jeanist is...a strange lookin' character XD also there's a lot of characters but DON'T WORRY they'll remind u \every. single. episode\ who they are and the name of their quirk even all the way into Season 4 its still doing it

Nick

"Everyone knows the value of their careers, but so few know the value of a human life. What the world needs isn't more heros but more virtue, more kindness, and maybe more sacrifice." 15:52 wait a minute... value of a human life... sacrifice... HMMMMMM... Alex subconsciously making FMA references.

Omg I never realized Chris Sabat was Armstrong/All Might! If you ever want an idea of his acting range, look up Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho. He’s a gem

themightyabe

Ultimately I like this early part of the show. Obviously there's more to the story and the world (which you'll see more of), but I enjoy the earnestness and simplicity of this arc. Good-natured person that lacks something gets the thing they want. And the fact that it's consolidated into 4 episodes makes it so that the show can spend the rest of its time to exploring a lot of other things.

agoodwintv

Lmao that's so anime but in this case I'll probably be grateful. I'm already reserving a spot in my heart for Best Jeanist to be my favorite character, like a guilty pleasure.

Ramon Cintron

What I dont like about this show is the weak world building so dont expect to find out more details about how things like how can the school afford to keep rebuilding cities for testing we just get told how things are and no real proper explanation. Maybe try not to analyze the show and enjoy it with an empty head like the super fans do

Anonymous

going between this show and AoT everyday is gonna do something to your mind lol

Rudy Strother

As far as how the school affords things. Don’t forget this is a world of quirks! Things that may seem impossible or expensive to you may be quite simple or cheap if you have the right person/people with the right quirks. Quirks aren’t exclusively used for hero work.

Rudy Strother

“Why is this touching? Their is nothing COMPLEX about it”. And that’s the appeal of the show. It does all of the “cliches” perfectly right. It’s hard to explain but other media that does cliches just do them because they work. But this show actually understands them and uses them in a way that makes you appreciate and think about it. And most importantly, occasionally flops them on their head and makes you think. I look forward to future reactions bro!

agoodwintv

I've already noticed some interesting effects. It changes the tone of my day slightly

agoodwintv

For sure, my impression so far is that the writer(s?) have a great birds-eye view of this whole genre :D

Excalibur Gaming

Every other reactor talks about the quirks and the story but Goodwin over here is figuring out the real questions, How in the god damn is this world economically viable?

Nick Heiney

This is such a bad show for him to watch. Don't get the wrong idea, I love this show! However, he is the type to overthink things. This show isn't that complex and would be hard for him to turn off that thinking switch of his. I just wish he would've watched a different type of show.

Nick Heiney

What is economy? What makes up an economy? Economy isn't that important anyway, especially if there are heroes and villains.

Xylen

I disagree. I was one of the ones pushing back against MHA a bit during the poll because I was worried there wouldn't be enough to discuss, but his reactions to these first few episodes have been encouraging (and really entertaining). I think it's clear from his comments that although he jokes about the complexities of this world and its economy or whatever, he appreciates that it's a relatively simple story (compared to the last few shows on the channel) done well. More importantly though, what's the point of this comment? I know that sounds rude, but seriously... We're 4 episodes in, why complain about this show being picked now? What purpose does it serve? The show's clearly not going anywhere, it won the poll and there aren't any glaring issues that would lead to that being reversed anytime soon (both Alex and many other people are apparently enjoying it). If you have specific issues with the content I'm not trying to stifle you, but maybe try to reserve judgement for a little while at least.

Xylen

Yeah, there are shows that try to juggle pretty much everything well, like FMAB. Characters, world-building, story/plot structure and themes, action, etc. And some even pull it off... like FMAB. This ain't one of those shows. And that's ok, because it doesn't try to be. It's not like it tries to make some believable excuse for how the school can afford these absolutely ludicrous testing facilities with 15-story robots for a throwaway entrance exam, or how that would be practical even if it was possible. It almost explicitly hand-waves it -- all that's important is how it affects the characters and their stories. There is still stuff to analyze and discuss in the show, mostly relating to characters and the more personal aspects, so I don't think it's totally fair to claim that you need an empty head to enjoy it. But it does purposefully skimp on some of the minutia when it comes to world-building, or at least intentionally makes it a bit over-the-top and unrealistic.

Anonymous

you are forgetting the impact quirks will already have on society. who needs construction equipment when you can earthbend? building one of those fake cities could cost as much as building a new firetruck. and the government could probably save money on fire trucks if they find enough people with water quirks.

Xylen

It could be that, construction would be a lot easier and I think the show even alludes to something like that later, but I still think it's just a "don't think about it too hard" kind of situation. Even if these test facilities were practically free and could be built in a day, the sheer amount of space they take up, potential consequences of rebuilding and destroying so much material over and over (again maybe solved with quirks), and most importantly the chances of kids accidentally just getting killed outright even with a healer standing by... It's a very cartoony world lol (and that's not a bad thing)

BubbleTea

I think your reaction to Best Jeanist sums up everyone's 1st reaction to him

BubbleTea

Also, hearing that violin during Deku's sad moment after failing reminded me of Mr. Krabs playing the world's smallest violin.

Nick Heiney

Or maybe I can say whatever the fuck I want? C'mon. Whatever my opinions are, this is a place to have a discussion. How many episodes will he mention economy? It seems like he doesn't understand how having quirks can help the economy grow.

Xylen

It's a joke, man. It seems to me that Alex understands that the show isn't really focused on the minutia of how every aspect of the economy would work in this world. It's just a running gag, because it's an easy bit to be way too serious about an unimportant element that the show clearly isn't focused on or overly concerned with. Maybe I'm the one misunderstanding things there, but... I don't think so. Regardless, I wasn't trying to shut down criticism of any specific part of the reaction. My point was that there WAS no specific criticism. Your comment was just negative, with no other feedback. You didn't even say, like, "I appreciate your attempts to find deeper meaning, but with this show it's better to just sit back and enjoy the ride," or something. You just said (paraphrasing), "This is a bad show for him, he won't be able to like it, it's hopeless, he should have picked something else." There are no action items there, no way to improve. So what was the point? In what way would your comment have made this or future content better, or in any way contributed to or improved anybody's enjoyment? Even if you're thinking, "it's so he won't pick shows like this in the future," again... reserve judgement. Save those sorts of comments for when we're approaching the next poll, because this one's going nowhere for a while. You're right, this is the place to have a discussion. Your original comment offered none. It was just defeatist. Maybe my response (and maybe this one too) came off as a personal attack, so I'm sorry. It wasn't intended that way. But I think your original comment - even just the way you framed it - could have been more constructive, to say the least.

DrowsyCody

Bro idk why your being a dick to people in the comments have you ever thought of maybe pulling the stick from your ass and enjoying life?

Nick

"Ohhhh boo hoo, allow me to play you a song using me quirk: the world's smallest violin..."

Xylen

I was admittedly annoyed by the original comment because people were complaining so heavily and trashing this show on the poll and then even on episode 1, so seeing this here on episode 4 struck a nerve and I might have come off a little strong. Then he was a bit hostile, and I came off a little stronger. I stand by what I said about his initial comment, but I could have been more tactful. Don't want to just pick pointless battles and drag the comments section down.

Nick

uh. I know you're joking but editing is not easy I don't blame him He is a human too

benj

lmao Ik I could never be mad at King Goodwin, I honestly don't know what I would do if he stopped uploading videos tbh

ScaryPurpleAmpersand

I'm a little late to the party here, but on the subject of the economy, I think there's probably been a colossal increase in productivity. Imagine how effective Spiderman would be as a construction worker. Let's assume half of the people with quirks are involved in the whole heroes and villains stuff, i.e. 40% of the population. Of the remaining population, two thirds of them still have quirks, and those quirks can be used to produce goods and offer services. Yeah, Deku's entire class was planning on taking the hero course in high school, but that doesn't mean that they went on to be full time heroes for the remainders of their lives. The story is following Deku's perspective, and his fixation on heroes leaves us mostly in the dark as to how non-heroes are using their quirks, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening. For instance Deku's mother has a quirk, isn't a hero, and appears to be a single mother so she likely has a job of some sort, and telekinesis likely comes in handy for it.

Joined patreon just now and I have mixed feeling how Goodwin started watching MHA. It had its prime time and I do not think the mangaka is resourseful enough to bring back the good stuff any more.

Spizami

Jeez guys, what's with all the negativity? Just enjoy Goodwin giving us content (content that was voted on I must add). I feel really bad that Goodwin is having to read all these comments, my hero might not be as amazing to talk about as intently as FMA:b and atla but it's still very enjoyable. Hope you're doing well Goodwin.

Rachel Keys

The language Aoyama (navel lazer guy) was speaking was French. I love his character though hes so ridiculous and low key a fave of mine. Loving the reactions because its obvious how traumatized you are by AOT lmao. Great work <3

Anders Pike

Sadly I think you put a lot more thought into the worldbuilding of MHA than the author did. The show frequently wants to have it's cake and eat it too.

Richard Lucas

Who would have guessed that MHA would be so controversial. I would have picked AoT for that (I’m not a huge fan of super graphic violence). Regardless, let’s all try to be cordial even if we disagree. I love this series. They do such a good job. And I love his analysis of it!

Richard Lucas

And don’t forget UA offers four courses: hero, support, general and business. Business is every bit as important as heroics, education wise.

Fredo_Credo

One of the people in the green monitor room sounded like Barry, or maybe I just miss him (weirdly? Rip Barry)

Andrew G

I’m so late to this post but, I have a question for everyone lol uh, when All Might’s talking to Deku on the hologram thing, when they zoom in and his face was the only thing you could see Did anyone else have flashbacks to those creepy as shit Max Headroom videos from the late 80s? where someone hijacked television broadcasts and just had someone on screen with a Max Headroom mask on gesticulating and speaking in some distorted voice Cause I didn’t realize how deeply affected I was by those videos til that shit non-ironically triggered me lol Good God
